Advising

Incoming Freshmen
The Office of Advising and Testing is responsible for registering and advising each class of incoming undergraduates.  We work in cooperation with Financial Aid, the Registrar, and Admissions to help ease each newcomer in the transition from high school student to college student.

Students meet one-on–one with a trained administrator to discuss God's leading in regards to your academic and vocational choices. Various majors and career interests will be personally explored.

Your first appointment is more than simply selecting your courses.  How do your academic strengths fit into your career objectives?  What patterns might keep you from attaining these goals?  The advisor will help you to decide what major to pursue, what classes to take, and you will leave with a developed action plan to bring these objectives into reality.  Advising & Testing will serve as your advising center until a major has been decided and at least 15 credit hours have been completed.

Returning Students
Returning students would be scheduled through our office if one of the following is true:

  • You have not yet decided on a major.
  • You have not successfully completed 15 credit hours.
  • You are a Liberal Arts major. (those will be assigned Gary Phelps as an advisor). Most students will do their scheduling of classes through their faculty advisors.

How do I get an Advisor?
After students have completed 15 credit hours at Malone they will be sent a form in the mail from our office. This simple one page form must be completed and returned to our office. Students will then be notified of their faculty advisor assignment by campus mail.  It is the responsibility of the student to contact that faculty member so they can schedule their classes.

Test Center
The Malone College Test Center is located within our office and is used by students for many reasons. One way we help students is to present various testing options that might be available in gaining academic credit

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) can facilitate the completion of credits with tests instead of classes. The cost of each CLEP tests cost is $65.00. For those who receive a passing score, there will be a transcript service fee of $15 per course charged to the student’s account. Non-Malone students may take a CLEP test in our center for an additional test administrative fee of $15.

Malone Tests: There are credit by exam tests for certain Malone courses. The administration fee is $40.00 each and is due at the time of testing.   If the student successfully completes the exam, credit may be purchased at the rate of  $30 per credit hour.  This charge will be put directly onto your bill. For more information about this form of testing please contact our office.

Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency or CAAP Test is a test that every student at Malone is required to take towards meeting graduation requirements. Once students reach 45 credit hours, 9 of which have been accomplished in their major, you should schedule a time for the CAAP test.  Testing sessions are held once each semester.  The sign up sheets are found on the bulletin board across from the Advising and Testing Office at the beginning of each semester.  This test is just a way that the college can see how students are advancing in their studies compared to their ACT & SAT scores (CAAP is given by the ACT Company). It is composed of 5 sections: Reading, Writing, Science, Mathematics and Critical Thinking. For study information try the CAAP web site (http://www.act.org/caap/sample/index.html).

Advising & Testing also gives the ACT privately or residually.  Test results are for Malone use only for admission or scholarship purposes.  Scores reports are not sent to the test takers and cannot be transferred to other colleges or scholarship organizations.  Test results can be obtained from your admissions representative. The cost is $45.00.  If you would like to schedule an ACT Residual, please contact your admissions representative.

Additional Services: Special accommodations can be provided at our test center for students with special needs documentation. Arrangements should be made through the professor of each individual class.
