Circulation Policies

Students
Malone College students may check out library materials with their student I.D. cards. Students from other OCLC-affiliated colleges in Stark and contiguous counties may check out materials on their college I.D. cards.

Books in the regular stacks circulate to students for three months. They are subject to recall after three weeks. Books may be renewed at the circulation desk, by phone, or by students looking at their circulation record through the OPAL catalog. Records, scores, and books in the curriculum library, the Friends Library, the juvenile section, the popular reading section, and the government documents collection circulate on the same basis as regular books. Books which are placed on reserve by faculty members have varying circulation times which are determined by the professors. Music CD's may be checked out for two weeks. DVDs and videos circulate for one week and only to Malone students and faculty. Periodicals and reference books cannot be taken from the library.

Books and periodical articles may be requested from other libraries by completing an interlibrary loan request form at the circulation desk. Charges for periodical photocopies obtained through interlibrary loan will vary, depending upon what the lending library charges our library.

If overdue books have been returned but the fines remain unpaid, the fines may be added to the student's account in the Business Office.

Community Patrons
People living in the Stark County area may purchase a library card enabling them to check out library materials (up to 5 items at a time) for four weeks. The cost is $5.00 for the first year, $1.00 for annual renewals. OhioLINK students may check out materials free of charge upon presentation of a current college ID. Malone alumni and Friends ministers may also check out library materials free of charge.

Books in the regular stacks and the Friends Library circulate for four weeks with one possible renewal. Records, scores, pamphlets, curriculum materials, and the government documents collection circulate on the same basis as regular books. These items are subject to recall after three weeks. Music CD's may also be checked out for four weeks. Periodicals and reference books cannot be taken from the library.

Interlibrary loan privileges are extended to Malone students and employees only.

Faculty and Staff
Malone College employees may check out library materials with their I.D. cards. Books in the regular stacks and the Friends Library circulate for twelve months. They are subject to recall after three weeks. A recalled book must be returned within 7 days. Records, scores, pamphlets, curriculum materials, and the government documents collection circulate on the same basis as regular books. Music CD's may be checked out for four weeks. DVDs and videos circulate for one week, but extended loan periods can be arranged for items used for instruction. Items which are placed on reserve by faculty members have varying circulation times which are determined by the professors. Periodicals and reference books cannot be taken from the library.

OPAL and OhioLINK Materials
Books from other OPAL and OhioLINK libraries may be requested through our catalog. The books circulate for 3 weeks with four possible renewals. Periodical articles and books which are not available at an OPAL or OhioLINK library may be requested from other libraries by completing an interlibrary loan request form at the circulation desk. Charges for periodical photocopies obtained through interlibrary loan will vary, depending upon what the lending library charges our library.

Overdue Materials
It is the borrower's responsibility to check the date due receipt or to check his or her electronic circulation record. Fines are an incentive for patrons to return or renew books on time. The fines charged are:

Regular loans Grace period (4 days)
5th day: $.50, Thereafter: $.10 per day

Other Books:
  • Recalled books (after 7 days): $.50 per day
  • 2 week books: $.50 per day
  • 1 day books: $.50 per day
  • 1-2 hour books: $.50 per hour or portion of an hour
  • Reserve and curriculum books: $25 per day
  • OPAL/OhioLINK books: $.50 per day

When materials are overdue, notices will be sent through e-mail or U.S. mail. The first notice is a free courtesy notice. However, second and third notices will be sent if there is no response too the first. These will cost $.50 each. Finally, a statement will be sent which adds $1.00 to the charges. If a book is lost, the library should be notified at once. The fines will be stopped at that date and a reasonable period will be allowed to search for the book with no penalty added. If a Malone book is not returned, the borrower will be charged the current cost of replacement plus a $10.00 processing fee. If the book is out of print, it will be charged at $25.00. The library cannot assume the responsibility for a patron's nonreceipt of an overdue notice. Address changes should be reported at the circulation desk.

Fines for OPAL and OhioLINK items are $.50 per day for overdue items. The replacement cost for any lost item is $125.00.
