Using Network Resources

Logging On to the Malone Network
Your computers have been configured to connect to campus network resources such as email, network drives, web access, and shared printers.  In order to access these resources, you will need to log on to the network using the Enter Network Password  dialog box shown below:

  1. The User name is the first part of your email address.
For example, if your e-mail address is jdoe@malone.edu, then your User name is jdoe.
  2. The Password is the same as the one you use for email.
  3. The Domain  must be MALONE.
Network Drives
The H: drive
The H: drive is your personal network storage space in which to save all work-related data.  It can only be accessed upon your network login, which provides security for all your files.  Because this drive is located on the Malone network, it may be accessed from any computer on campus that is connected to the network.  All files saved to your H: drive are backed up on a nightly basis.  Back-ups are kept for one year in the event that your data would need to be restored.  In order to maintain sufficient storage space for all users, a limit of 150 megabytes (MB) per individual has been determined, and is stated in the “Usage of the H: Drive” policy.

Who uses the H: drive?
Intended use for all faculty, staff, and students

The S: drive
The S: drive provides shared network storage space that is specific to your office or department.  Only those with permissions to access this drive can save or open files stored in this location.  Permissions are set by an IT Network Administrator upon request.  All files saved to the S: drive are backed up on a nightly basis.  Back-ups are kept for one year in the event that your data would need to be restored.  The S: drive provides a convenient central location for any data that must be accessed by faculty and/or staff in your department.

The W: drive
The W: drive provides shared network storage space that is specific to your office or department.  This drive was set up to provide access to departmental data that can be shared by student workers as well.  Only those with permissions to access this drive can save or open files in this location.  Permissions are set by an IT Network Administrator upon request.  All files saved to the W: drive are backed up on a nightly basis.  Back-ups are kept for one year in the event that your data would need to be restored. Passwords
Before these network resources were available, the damage caused by a compromised password was isolated to email.  Now the risks are greater since your network password unlocks the door to your own home directory, your department's shared files, and access to the Internet.  Therefore, it is important to follow the guidelines below:

Thou shalt not share your passwords.
Sharing your network password would identify you as doing something you are not doing.

Thou shalt not leave a computer while logged on.
If you do, someone else may have access to your documents and your department's documents.  Furthermore, these documents might even be changed or deleted, without you even knowing about it.

Thou shalt not use passwords that are easy to guess.
A strong password should be at least 8 characters long and include alphanumeric and shifted characters.
