Head Coach

Kelly Gray

Kelly Gray enters her second season as the head coach of the Pioneers.  Last year she led the girls to a 12-6-3 overall record, 4-3-1 in the conference, with a showing in the NAIA Region IX & X Tournament.  Leading the Pioneers to be the first team to shut out the #6 nationally ranked Houghton College all year , Malone tied the Highlanders after two overtime periods, with the Highlanders advancing by penalty kicks, in the regional semi-final game.  Looking to expand on last year’s successes, Gray enters this season with high hopes for the Pioneers.

Prior to coaching at Malone, Kelly was most recently the 1st Assistant Women's Soccer Coach for Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for four years (2002-2006) just prior to her arrival at Malone.  While at Edinboro, the team was ranked as high as 14th nationally in the NSCAA Division II rankings and made the playoffs two of the four years she was there.  Gray also helped the Fighting Scots to a top ten ranking in the Northeast Region on a weekly basis.  Prior to her position at Edinboro, she served as the Head Women's Soccer Coach for Baldwin-Wallace College for two years and the assistant for one year.  In addition, she has coached both girls and boys’ premier soccer club teams and has been the Director of Girls’ Coaching for the Excalibur Premier Soccer Club since 2001.  Here she has coached two teams to a National Indoor Soccer Championship.

Gray played center midfield for Bowling Green State University.  There she was a four-year starter and two-year captain.  In addition, she played premier club soccer for the Internationals, Ohio Premier and Concordia.  Gray has played internationally in 8 countries spanning from Europe in the Gothia Cup, the World Youth Cup to Central America for Athletes in Action.  As recent as 2005, she played on a Women’s 30 and Over team that captured the National Indoor Soccer Championship.

Gray, graduated in 1993 from BGSU with a BSBA majoring in Management Information Systems and International Business.  Gray has also attended many coaching courses and holds the United States Soccer Federation License, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National, KNVB (Dutch) Advanced Coaching Certificate, KNVB Coaching Certificate, NSCAA National Youth, and the NSCAA High School Diploma.  In addition, she recently received the Who's Who Among America's Teachers &  Educators award for the 2007-08 academic year.

Assistant Coaches

Julie Herbst - Assistant Coach

Julie “Jules” Herbst enters her first season as assistant coach for the Pioneers after a stellar campaign as a player for Malone College .  Graduating from Malone with a major in Outdoor Leadership, Jules holds nearly every offensive record for the Pioneers including Most Goals Scored in a Career, Most Goals Scored in a Season, and Most Points in a Career.  Starting off her career winning a National Championship, Jules was awarded Freshman Player of the Year and went on to be a four-time All-American at Malone.  She led the team as a two-year captain, after returning from an extensive ACL repair, and earned almost every post-season award every year.  Julie will obviously help set the standards for the Pioneer team this season.  Although her goal-scoring ability will be greatly missed, she will provide an exceptional example from the sidelines, helping lead the Pioneers to yet another winning season.

Amanda Zabukovec - Graduate Assistant

Holding the position of Graduate Assistant, Amanda “Boo” Zabukovec will contribute heavily to the abilities of the coaching staff this season.  Graduating from Malone with a major in Sports Management and minors in Coaching and Athletic Training, Zabukovec will continue her education at her Alma Mater while providing the Pioneers with plenty of leadership and guidance.  During her time as a player, Amanda anchored the defense as center-back and was honored as the AMC South Conference Player of the Year in 2006, coming off of an outstanding season and remarkable career for the Pioneers.  Her significant leadership and defensive ability earned her nearly every post-season award through the years and three All-American titles.  After winning a National Championship her freshman year, Boo helped continue the winning tradition Malone stood for and led her team as a senior-captain.  Being a coach now for the Pioneers will allow her to continue her high level of contribution and we are excited about what she will bring to the team the next two years.  Amanda holds the NSCAA Advanced Regional License.
