Weather-Related School Closings

TO: Malone College Community
FROM: Dr. Patricia Long, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs
SUBJECT: Weather-Related School Closings DATE: December 7, 2007

Does Malone College close for bad weather in the winter? The answer is yes, BUT VERY INFREQUENTLY. The policy followed here is similar to that of other colleges and universities, which could lead to a situation in which various public school systems will be closed while Malone remains open.

If there is a heavy snowfall or other emergency which would necessitate the canceling of classes or the closing of the campus, announcements will be made over the following:

WHLO-640AM, WTAM-1100AM, Radio Free Ohio 1350AM , WHBC-1480/94.1, WAKR 1590, malone/radio 1610 WCPN-90.3, WQMX-94.9, WNPQ 95.9, WAKS-96.5, WONE 97.5, WKDD-98.1, WGAR-99.5, WMMS-100.7, WCRF-103.3, WCLV 104.9, WMJI-105.7, WMVX-106.5 WeatherPLUS Time Warner Digital 522, WOW & Comcast 208 WKYC-TV 3, WOIO-TV 19, WKBN-TV 27, WVIZ/PBS, WUAB-TV 43, (FOX 8 for CDC only) wykc.com, wtam.com, wmvx.com, wmji.com, wgar.com, kisscleveland.com, wmms.com, 640whlo.com, wkdd.com, 1350radiofreeohio.com, cantonrep.com

In addition, there will be a SPECIAL BULLETIN posted on the Malone College homepage () that will also provide closure and cancellation advisories. When day classes are to be canceled, the stations will normally be prepared to announce the closing by 6:30 a.m. If evening classes are to be canceled, an announcement will usually be made by 3:30 p.m. In either case, please do not call the stations or the Malone College number. The stations typically make an announcement on the air within a few minutes of our call to them.
If you are a seasoned commuter, you know that the weather may vary considerably at different spots in northeastern Ohio.

Hence, Malone may cancel classes when the weather at your home is not serious and vice versa. Often the deciding factor is whether or not the Malone crews will be able to have the parking lots open by 7:45 a.m.

Faculty members have agreed to give special consideration and help to commuters who, because of impassable roads, cannot get to class. We simply ask each commuter to evaluate honestly the road conditions in his/her area and to make every attempt to be present when the College is open. However, we are not asking you to take undue risks.

All offices will be closed when Malone College cancels classes due to severe weather. Your supervisor will notify you should circumstances require you to work during this closed time. Please use your discretion if road conditions.

The following Guidelines for Faculty--Weather and Effect Upon Classes (Approved by the Academic Cabinet, November 1984) should be followed:
1.             Faculty should give special consideration and help to commuters who, because of impassable roads, cannot get to class.

2.             Faculty and staff must make no statements which could even be construed to mean there is a likelihood that classes will be canceled because of bad weather.

3.             Faculty who cannot make it to campus for classes because of bad driving conditions should call and notify their Department Chair, or if unable to reach that person, the Provost, giving instructions which can be relayed to students in their classes.  (Department Chairs will notify the Provost of faculty absence; and if you must be absent, please notify your department secretary and, in turn, ask her to notify the Provost.)

4.             Faculty may, on class days when commuters living at a distance may decide it is impossible to attempt the journey to campus, leave with the department secretary assignments which could be given to such students who call in.

5.             Faculty are encouraged to provide their students at the beginning of the semester with syllabi or course outlines which would guide them in moving ahead in their assignments when it is necessary for the College to cancel classes or impossible for students to drive to campus.

6.             In some cases, when time and/or class size permit, the Department Chair might instruct the secretary to call commuters in the classes of a faculty member who finds it impossible to make it to campus.

7.             Students should be notified that, regardless of the faculty member’s rank or degrees, they should remain fifteen minutes for the teacher to arrive, unless the teacher has called in to indicate a later time.

8.             Graduate School/School of Continuing Studies/Degree Completion programs.  In the event weather condition gradually deteriorate during late afternoon or evening hours, or in anticipation of a storm or hazardous road conditions, the instructor has the authority to issue an early dismissal.
