Although tornados can strike at anytime, April and May are the months when they are most prevalent. Please take a moment to review the following information. Two terms are used by the Weather Bureau:
If a “tornado watch” is given, a “tornado warning” may follow. Please be alert and ready to take immediate action. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Protect your head from flying objects or falling debris. Interior areas on the lowest level are usually the best protection. If in a car seek shelter in a low lying area, such as a ditch or ravine. Malone College campus is situated between two emergency weather sirens, operated by the City of Canton. In the event that you hear these sirens, take immediate shelter. During periods of severe weather, Campus Safety will monitor local weather radio for the latest information. In the event of a tornado warning, Campus Safety will communicate through all means available, for Malone College Students, Staff, and Faculty to take immediate shelter. Campus Safety will announce an all-clear once the warning has been cancelled. Preferable Areas of Shelter
Your best defense is to familiarize yourself with the above listed shelter locations and know where you would go before it becomes necessary. It is recommended that you seek shelter in the building you are in at the time of the warning. Do not travel outside to seek shelter in another building unless absolutely necessary. The National Weather Service has combined efforts with local and state agencies to establish a weather radio network that provides continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information. Our weather station is located at Cleveland Hopkins airport and broadcasts at 162..400MHz. The weather service can also activate small specially designed radio receivers when a weather emergency exists. These weather radios can be purchased at several local electronic retail stores |
