Student Parking Misconceptions

Did you ever get a parking ticket on campus because someone gave you the wrong information about student parking policies? We have listed some of the most popular parking misconceptions below, so please take a minute to read through them. Our goal is to separate fact from fiction so you can avoid making the parking mistakes that lead to unwanted parking fines!

  1. I'm a commuter, so I don't need to have a student parking permit.
ALL students COMMUTERS and RESIDENTS are required to purchase a parking permit if you plan to park a vehicle on the Malone campus.
  2. I paid for my parking permit at the Business Office that means my car is registered.
Your car is NOT registered until you fill out a Student Parking Registration Card at the Physical Plant office AND have a student permit displayed in your vehicle.
  3. I don't have to buy a student parking permit if I park my vehicle in the big parking lot in front of Osborne Hall.
You need to have a student permit to park you vehicle in ALL campus parking lots without exception.
  4. I don't need my student permit anymore so I can sell it or give it to someone else.
Your parking permit is NON-TRANSFERABLE and registered to you. If you give it to another student and they get a ticket – that fine will be on YOUR account. You can also be charged a $50 fine for letting others use your permit!
  5. I got a ticket for being parked in a STAFF space at 7:30 a.m. but I don't have to move my car until after 8:00 a.m.
Students may park in unrestricted STAFF spaces between 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and on weekends ONLY. Any other time, your vehicle is subject to a fine. If your student permit is not displayed – that fine will be doubled! Please note, some STAFF spaces on campus have signs stating they are not available for student use at any time.
  6. I can park in a STAFF parking space when I don't have classes due to a Holiday break or weather cancellations.
Even when you don't have class, FACULTY and STAFF offices are still open. You are required to follow the same parking regulations that apply when classes are in session.
  7. I forgot to bring my student permit so I can park in VISITOR parking.
If you forget your permit you can get a temporary parking pass at the Physical Plant office. Students should never use VISITOR parking.
  8. I can use a HANDICAP space or park in a FIRELANE if I'm only going to be there for a few minutes.
It is NEVER appropriate to use a HANDICAP space or a non-parking area without permission. It's not just Malone's rule, it's the law – that's why the fine is $40.
  9. I got a parking ticket and it says I'm not registered. I have a parking permit so I can just ignore the fine.
Your permit must be displayed or your car will be considered NOT REGISTERED. You must contact Safety with proof of registration to receive a fine adjustment – otherwise the fine will stand as written.
  10. I don't need to have a Malone parking permit to park at the Canton Jewish Community Center lot.
Malone College has special permission from CJCC to use the west end of their parking lot. You must have a student permit to park at the CJCC.
  11. I can park at Canton Christian Home or in visitor spaces at FCC during chapel and if I don't display my permit, they won't know I'm a student.
Both First Christian Church and Canton Christian Home have asked us to respect the parking policies that allow Malone students to use the main parking area west of FCC only. If Safety observes a student vehicle in any other location (with or without a permit) you will get a citation.
  12. It's snowing, this might be a staff parking space, but with the snow on the ground I can't tell. I'll just park there and tell Safety I didn't know it was a staff space.
Try to make yourself familiar with locations of student parking before the weather turns bad. If snow is covering ground markings look for signs indicating if the parking area you are in is STAFF parking. When in doubt – DON'T PARK THERE!
  13. I brought my parent's car today since mine is in the shop. I'll just park in one of the big lots and hope Safety doesn't notice that I don't have a permit.
If you bring a different car for a few days you can still use your student permit in that car. If you forget to bring your permit, you can get a temporary one at the Physical Plant office. Don’t take a chance on getting a ticket when you can avoid any problems by using a temporary pass. Temporary passes are also available for your family and friends who come to visit on Campus.
  14. I keep getting tickets because Safety has nothing better to do.
Wrong. Safety has much better things to do besides writing parking tickets. It is their job to enforce Malone's parking regulations and it is your responsibility as part of the Malone community to follow the parking regulations. The best way to avoid a ticket is to avoid the mistakes that lead to parking fines.

For more information, refer to the Student Parking Regulations Booklet. A copy of the booklet is available at the Physical Plant office or contact Campus Safety at X8111 if you have questions. We're here to help you make it through the Academic year without parking fines!
