The Malone College Counselor Training Center (CTC) is a teaching facility for graduate students in counseling preparing to be professional counselors in community / agency and school settings.
The primary mission of the CTC is to provide counselors-in-training opportunities to develop professional counseling skills and techniques, advance practical knowledge, foster professional identity, and enhance clinical competencies.
Counseling Practicum is a one semester, supervised counseling experience in which students serve as counselors-in-training at pre-arranged sites appropriate to their program emphasis. Practicum consists of a minimum of 100 clock hours. A minimum of 40 hours of direct counseling (individual and group) is required. Students receive one hour of face-to-face supervision weekly from a qualified site supervisor during the duration of the Practicum. Throughout the semester, students also meet 2 ½ hours weekly for group supervision with the college supervisor. Group supervision involves case presentations of students’ counseling with individual clients. In addition, group supervision provides to the integration of their on-site counseling experiences with theory, process and ethical issues learned in previous counseling courses. Both the site supervisor and the college supervisor complete formal evaluations of the student’s performance upon completion of the Practicum experience (Malone College Graduate School Catalog).

- COUN. 661 Counseling Children
- COUN. 567 Group Dynamics / Processing / Counseling
This room is a cozy area where clients can sign in for services at the reception window and wait for their counselors-in-training to greet and escort them to one of the Center’s counseling rooms. Clients can feel safe in knowing that this room shelters them from the rest of the activities and passers by who frequent the lower level of Founders Hall. Following the completion of counseling sessions, clients are escorted back to this room to schedule their next appointment.
The Waiting Room has adequate seating for 3-4 clients awaiting counseling sessions. Various types of reading material and coffee are available. Clients can enjoy easy listening music until their appointment.

The CTC is staffed by the Counseling faculty and support services from the Graduate School. The Receptionist / Staff office serves is the hub for communication, documentation and other administrative aspects of the Center. It includes a telephone and computer resources.
Counselors-in-training use this office to coordinate appointments and use of the Center’s facilities. The Center staff is crucial in facilitating the use of the CTC resources. Client files, CTC documentation, blank forms, and other related Practicum and CTC information are housed in this room. This is the first place counseling students check in and the last place they check out when utilizing the resources of the CTC.
This room serves as "the Bridge" of the CTC and it is from here that all dates, times, documentation and CTC resources are approved for use and coordinated.
Room 1 is set up for small seminar classes and meetings, group counseling sessions of up to ten clients, larger family counseling sessions, etc. This is our large multi-purpose counseling room.
It provides live observation of counseling sessions via the one-way window from the Observation Room. This room also contains two highly sensitive multidirectional microphones and a video camera unit with zoom capabilities. Both of these observation methods allow for counselor education and supervision capabilities that greatly enhance students’ practical experiences.
The room is furnished with one large folding table and 8 chairs. The room also has an end table and table lamp for more intimate family counseling or individual counseling sessions.
CTC Room 1 is our multi-purpose group counseling and seminar room.
CTC Room 2 is set up for small group counseling sessions up to five clients, small family counseling sessions, individual counseling sessions, and child-centered counseling with access to toys and other play therapy resources, etc.
It provides live observation of counseling sessions via the one-way window from the Observation Room. This room also contains a highly sensitive multidirectional microphone and a video camera unit with zoom capabilities. Both of these observation methods allow for counselor education and supervision capabilities that greatly enhance students’ practical experiences.
The room is furnished with 4 chairs, an end table, table lamp. It also has a toy box with resources for counseling children.
This is our individual and small group room. It is also our Play Room and will be very child-friendly.
The Observation Room is the place where individuals can observe live counseling sessions in either counseling room through the one-way windows. Students can learn for professional practitioners, faculty can teach practical skill application and faculty supervisors can guide the development of counselors-in-training. Students will have the opportunity to get live feedback on their skills. Five observers are able to sit comfortably at the documentation counter.
All of the audio and video equipment is controlled from this room. Videotapes of counseling sessions can be made and reviewed here. Each of the video cameras in the counseling rooms are controlled from this room, including focus and zoom. The room houses two VCR/Monitor units for observing, hearing and taping sessions.
Counseling resources are stored in this room including therapeutic games, treatment related videos, group curriculums, etc. This room also serves as a secondary office for documentation and related administrative duties.
The heart and brain center of the CTC is the Observation Room.
