Clinical Laboratory ScienceA Biology-Clinical Laboratory Science major is offered through affiliation of Malone College with the Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron, which is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron is a joint clinical laboratory science educational program of Akron General Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron, and Summa Health System (Akron City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital). Malone College students who are pursuing a career in Clinical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology) are eligible to apply to the Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron after 90 semester hours of study at Malone. Acceptance into the program is competitive. Although a minimum cumulative gpa of 2.70 with a minimum of 2.00 in chemistry and biology courses is required, a 3.00 cgpa or higher is strongly recommended. Students who are accepted into the Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron and successfully complete the full-year curriculum of the program will receive academic credit of 30 – 38 hours toward the bachelor’s degree from Malone College. Upon satisfactory completion of the program and assuming that all other Malone College requirements for graduation have been met, the student will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Clinical Laboratory Science from Malone College which will be awarded at the college commencement following graduation from the Program. The student will also be awarded a certificate of completion from the Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron. Graduates are then eligible to take national certification examinations such as those offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry (ASCP) and the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA). Course requirements from within the Department of Science and Mathematics are BIOL 141, 142, 146, 313, 371 and one biology elective to total sixteen hours minimum; CHEM 131, 132, 331, 343, 344; MATH 150; and a computer science course. Students who wish to apply to a medical technology or clinical laboratory science program with which Malone College is not affiliated may do so. The guidance of a faculty advisor is encouraged. Students who wish to apply to the Cooperative Medical Technology Program of Akron following completion of a baccalaureate degree are considered non-affiliates and will receive 35 credit hours of instruction from the program. Upon graduation from the program, a certificate is awarded and the graduate is eligible to take national certification examinations. |
