Biology majors, irrespective of track specialty, take the following core courses: BIOL 145, 146, 200, 253, 254, 371, 372, 350 or 381 (BIOL 381 is specified for Environmental Science Track Biology majors). Supporting core courses include CHEM 131 and 132, and a computer science course.
The Environmental Science Track courses consist of the Biology core courses (with BIOL 381 required), supporting core courses, BIOL 285, BIOL 386, BIOL 460, an AuSable Institute course (or BIOL 350), CHEM 221, CHEM 336, and MATH 201. Environmental Science students are strongly encouraged to take PHYS 211 and PHYS 212.
The General Biology Track courses include the Biology core courses, supporting core courses, MATH 150 or 201, and two Biology electives at the 300/400 level, one of which must be a laboratory course.
The Life Science Teaching Track courses include the Biology core courses, supporting core courses, PHYS 100, SCI 120, SCI 160, MATH 201, and two courses from among BIOL 320, 353, and 360. This track prepares students to be licensed to teach life sciences. Upon completing this program, 33 hours of Professional Education requirements (EDUC 112, 232, 312, 357, 362, 405, 415, 443, 482; SPED 243), and other requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree, students will be licensed to teach life science in grades 7-12.
The Pre-Professional Track courses include the Biology core courses, supporting core courses, MATH 201, BIOL 375, BIOL 460, two Biology electives at the 300/400 level, one of which must be a laboratory course, CHEM 221 and CHEM 322.
Students preparing for graduate and professional schools (medical, dental, veterinary, etc.) are encouraged to seek the guidance of an advisor on the importance and relevance of including the following courses in their schedules: CHEM 331, 332, 343, 344; MATH 202; PHYS 211, 212.
A minor in biology will be awarded to students who complete the following 19-21 hours of courses and meet the College required minimum cgpa of 2.25 in those courses. All candidates for the minor must take BIOL 145, 146, 200, 253 or 254, two 300/400 level courses, one of which must be a laboratory course.
