Student Teaching

The student teaching semester is usually reserved for the senior year. The preservice teacher will register for 15 week (minimum of 450 clock hours) student teaching session worth 12 semester hours. Student teaching also includes a weekly on-campus seminar and weekly visits and conferences with the college supervising teacher. The Malone Education Department reserves the right to deny requests for student teaching placements beyond the Stark County area.

It is very important that planning for student teaching begins early. All requirements for acceptance into the given academic major must be completed approximately one academic year before the scheduled student teaching semester. All student teaching applications are due by February preceding the school year in which student teaching will take place along with the Personal Data form ( MS Word word icon or Adobe PDF pdf icon). This schedule is followed to allow the Director of Student Teaching time to screen and interview applicants and make requests for assignments in early March for the next academic year. Preservice teachers must complete most, if not all, courses in their selected major and all professional education courses before student teaching begins.

Before student teaching begins, all student teachers must receive negative Bureau of Criminal Investigation fingerprint reports and negative tuberculosis (TB) skin tests. Fingerprinting is done electronically at Malone. Tuberculosis (TB) skin tests are administered and read by the Malone College Health Center. Failure to complete these tests in a timely manner will jeopardize the student teaching experience.

Evaluation of Student Teaching
Student teaching observation and evaluation forms focus on assessment criteria that Entry Year Teachers (EYTs) must be able to demonstrate to trained observers during the first year of a full-time teaching position. This includes written observation forms, Pre-Post Teaching Reflection Forms, Mid-term and Final Formative Evaluation Forms, and written evaluations from both the cooperating and supervising teachers. The student teachers are also expected to develop a professional portfolio during the student teaching semester.

Student Teaching in a Central American Country - Guatemala
It is possible to arrange a student teaching assignment in a location outside the United States. In particular, Malone College has a working relationship with private schools in Guatemala. Currently, Malone College preservice teachers may do student teaching in Guatemala under the supervision of Dr. Alvin Anderson. If interested, please contact the Director of Teacher Education.

Appendix G contains a list of questions that a preservice teacher should consider before deciding on a student teaching experience in Guatemala.
