Cross-Cultural Studies (3)
The focus is upon learning about characteristics of cultures around the world and comparing them w it h our own. Emphasis is upon developing new understandings of the nature and ingredients of other cultures and increasing one’s skill in cross-cultural communication. Offered each semester. Beginning in 2006-07, this course will be offered only as needed.

SOSC 211
Cross-Cultural Experience (1)
  An off-campus experience in a culture significantly different from the student’s own. This fulfills the cross cultural experience requirement in the general education curriculum. Prior to the experience the student is required to undergo preparatory work set by the Cross-Cultural Experience Comm it tee. After the experience the student engages in follow-up sessions and is required to write a paper. Details available from the Cross-Cultural Experience Coordinator in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences. Offered each semester.

Understanding the Social Sciences (3)
A study of the theories, concepts, and methods used by the disciplines of anthropology, economics, history, pol it ical science, psychology, and sociology to understand and interpret the social real it y of our diverse and interrelated world. Offered each semester. Beginning in 2006-07, this course will be offered only as needed.

Central American History, Geography, and Culture (3)
This course seeks to acquaint the student w it h the history, geography, and culture of Central America , w it h special focus on Guatemala . The course is divided into three sections, w it h one month’s study devoted to each of the three sections: history, geography, and culture. Offered during teaching semester in Guatemala

SOSC 242G
Guatemala Studies (2)
During the Teacher Education Semester in Guatemala , Malone   College students live w it h Guatemalan families, taking part in family life and customs. They attend conferences and seminars at the American Embassy and at other locations, vis it a variety of private and public schools, and take part in travel in various parts of the country. Students maintain a journal to document their experiences. Offered during teaching semester in Guatemala
