Sponsored by The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU)
Admission priority into the programs is given to qualified students from member institutions, then to students from affiliate campuses. If there is still room in a program, qualified students from non-CCCU schools will be considered. The quality of these academic programs is reviewed and improved by the CCCU Student Academic Programs Commission (SAPC), comprised of six faculty/administrators from CCCU member campuses. Because Malone College is a member of the Council, these diverse off-campus study programs are available to juniors and seniors with a minimum gpa of 2.75. For further information regarding academic requirements, financial arrangements and schedule planning, contact the Provost's Office. (Also visit www.bestsemester.com)
American Studies Program (ASP)
Founded in 1976 under the direction of Dr. John A. Bernbaum, the program has challenged hundreds of students to integrate their faith with the realities of the marketplace and public life through experiential learning in the nation's capital. A combination of class time and internships provides students with a total of 16 hours of academic credit for the semester. Course topics cover national and world events from a variety of perspectives, integrating biblical reflection and policy analysis through classroom lectures, site briefings, small group discussions and personal research. Briefings occur in places like the White House, Pentagon, State Department, congressional chambers and national think-tank conference rooms. China Studies Program (CSP)
China is going through monumental changes that encompass all aspects of life: economic, social, religious and political. This is a historic time as the country becomes increasingly open to exchanges of students and scholars, and other interaction with the West. With this new openness comes unprecedented opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of China's people, culture and language. Now is the time to experience China! The China Studies Program (CSP), an interdisciplinary semester program, enables students to view China from the inside, to experience its culture and its diversities. Participants are able to observe the evolution of "socialism with Chinese characteristics," and China's struggles with rapid modernization and social change. In addition, CSP students confront the misunderstandings that have existed between China and the West from each side of that divide. This happens through formal classes and study tours, but especially by meeting and interacting informally with Chinese undergraduates on campus. Contemporary Music Center (CMC) The contemporary music center on Martha's Vineyard offers students the opportunity to spend a semester studying, living and working with faculty, music industry experts and other students who share your interest in making and marketing contemporary music. It is a chance to devote some serious time to discovering how God would have you integrate your faith and your love of music in the marketplace. The program isn't just for music majors– it's for any student considering a career as a musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer, engineer, artist manager, booking agent, A&R director, marketing executive, music publisher, concert promoter or entertainment industry entrepreneur. In addition to core courses investigating the music industry and the intersection of faith and culture, students can choose between the Artist Track or the music Executive Track. Students will get of hands-on experience, plus lectures, seminars, directed study and an intensive practicum in a major music market. Latin American Studies Program (LASP)
Students interested in a total immersion experience would love the Latin American Studies Program (LASP), where they live with a Costa Rican family and adopt a Latin American lifestyle as they study language and culture! The program is designed for Christian students who are learning to integrate their faith and values with knowledge and experience. It is for those who desire to find out for themselves what God asks of them and what it means to act on what they learn in all areas of life. The overarching goal of LASP is to prepare students to live the Christian life in a world that is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. Understanding another culture requires the study of both its society and language, for neither exists independently. Knowing a society means knowing its language, and knowing a language requires knowing its society. LASP is designed to integrate these two elements, thereby giving you the best possible opportunity to deepen your own cross-cultural understanding. Los Angeles Film Studies Center (LAFSC)
Students who choose to attend the Los Angeles Film Studies Center (LAFSC) are exposed to a true "behind-the-scenes" look at the work and workings of Hollywood, yet at the same time are a part of a Christian based educational program committed to understanding what it means to be "salt and light" in this unique and powerful industry. The entire experience of classes, internships, and Christian fellowship provides the student with an opportunity to test his or her interest in pursuing a career in the mainstream entertainment industry. The mission of the Los Angeles Film Studies Center is to academically prepare persons for placement in the mainstream Hollywood film industry, preferably in decision-making positions, with a Christ-centered vision to dynamically influence film content, the production process and interpersonal relationships. In addition, the mission includes the development of advocates to advance an informed and discerning approach to understanding the media, as well as an appreciation for, and support of, the work of their peers in Hollywood. Middle East Studies Program (MESP)
The Middle East Studies Program (MESP) seeks to prepare students to live the Christian life in a world that is religiously and culturally pluralistic, whether that’s in the Middle East, North America, or other parts of the world. Studying in the Middle East gives students the opportunity to leave their familiar North American campus, to explore firsthand today’s troubled world, and with this experience, to understand more fully their place and role in it. The rigorous academic program seeks to go beyond theoretical learning to a deeper, moral type of learning. Intense encounters with different worldviews and truth-claims help to facilitate this while the MESP community fosters a supportive environment. Oxford Honors Program (OHP)
Honors and other highly qualified students have the exciting opportunity to study in England through this interdisciplinary semester in Oxford. The rigorous academic program, aimed at increasing critical thinking skills and scholarship from an integrated Christian perspective, allows participants to choose from a wide variety of tutorial study programs in numerous disciplines, including the arts, religion, history, literature and philosophy. In addition to two tutorials, students participate in a seminar and an integrative course through which they produce a scholarly project or term paper. Field trips provide opportunities for experiential learning in England's rich historical setting. Students earn 16 semester hours of credit. The overall aim of the programme is to provide each student with a rigorous training in particular disciplines within the context of a broad and well-balanced academic, cultural, and social life. Certain qualities are necessary if a student is to obtain maximum benefit from an education here: an enquiring mind, a critical approach to facts and, above all, a capacity for creative as well as analytical thought. In considering the individual applicant, the greatest importance is attached to the recommendations from faculty members who have personal knowledge of his or her work. Russian Studies Program (RSP)
It is an historic time to spend a semester living in the Republic of Russia and the Russian Studies Program (RSP) makes this possible. The Russian Studies Program gives participants the opportunity to be on the edge of discovery as political and economic events have a daily impact on the Russia of tomorrow and its relationship with the West. They can witness how the Holy Spirit is building the Church and strengthening ties between North American and Russian Christians. International Partner Programs
The Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) has become formally connected with lots of Christian universities all over the world. Many of these universities are located in very intriguing places like South Africa, India, Korea, Uganda and Australia. In all, we have about 50 schools located outside of North America who approach the CCCU to become "affiliate members." The CCCU serves as a bridge to connect our students here to those schools there.
