Middle Childhood Education

Bachelor of Science in Education
This program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree and the Ohio Provisional License in Middle Childhood Education, valid for teaching in grades four through nine in the curriculum areas named on the license. This program includes preparation in at least two of the following concentration areas: Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Reading /Language Arts. Each concentration area includes a minimum of 21 semester hours of course work. Requirements for each concentration area are listed in the Middle Childhood Education program guide available in the Department of Education Office.

Middle Childhood Education Provisional Licensure (Grades 4-9)

The major consists of course requirements in professional education (41 hrs.), and the middle childhood core which includes 9 hrs. in middle childhood education and a minimum total of 46 hrs comprised by any two concentration areas. 
 
Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement
 
The Ohio Board of Education has approved the Middle Childhood Generalist endorsement.  This endorsement can be added to any existing Middle Childhood license and for any combination of the four areas of concentration.  The generalist endorsement will aloow teachers to teach one or two new areas, grades 4-6 only.  Candidates will need to have academic credit on their Malone transcript for the following classes in order to add the respective endorsements:  Science:  PHYS 100, SCI 160; Social Studies:  HIST 362, POL 201;  Mathematics: MATH 132, MATH 241; and  Reading and Language Arts:  EDUC 305, ENG 221.  Application should be made through the office of the Dean of the College of Education and include a transcript with credit earned for the required classes.

Middle Childhood Core
EDUC 325, Nature and Needs of Adolescents (3 hrs); 385 [PHIL 210], Education and Issues in the Middle Grades (2 hrs);and two  methods courses which correspond with the chosen concentration areas. Select two from among EDUC 452, Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Grades (2 hrs); 453, Teaching Science in the Middle Grades (2 hrs); 454, Teaching Social Studies in the Middle Grades (2 hrs); 455, Teaching Language Arts in the Middle Grades (2 hrs).

Select Two of the Following Four Concentrations:

  • Reading and Language Arts:  EDUC 305*, Adolescent Literature (3 hrs); COMM 110*, Communication Skills 93 hrs); 230, Mass Media and Society (3 hrs); CMST 330, Interpersonal Communication (3 hrs); ENG 205*, Introduction to English Studies (3hrs); 221,  Teaching Grammar and Composition (3 hrs); 311, Expository Writing (3hrs); 356, American Literature Since 1865 (3 hrs); 383, History of the English Language (3 hrs). Note: EDUC 252, 318, 357, and 425 from the Professional Education requirements are also required for the Reading and Language Arts Concentration.

Additional Requirements:
Workshops in Communicable Diseases and Child Abuse (6 clock hrs each); PE 210, First Aid and Safety (3 hrs) or valid Red Cross Certification.
