This program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree and the cross-categorical Ohio Provisional License in Intervention Specialist: Mild/Moderate Educational Needs (K-12) valid for teaching learners who have mild or moderate educational needs.
Intervention Specialist: Mild/Moderate Educational Needs (K-12)
The major consists of course requirements in professional education (28 hrs.) and the special education core (35 hrs.) as follows:
Professional Education Course Requirements:
EDUC 112, Foundations of Education (3 hrs); 232, Psychology of Human Learning (3 hrs); 252, Phonics (3 hrs); 362, Instructional Technology (3 hrs); 405, Applied Instructional Technology (1 hr); 415, Assessment in Education (3 hrs); 460, Student Teaching Seminar (1 hr.); 496, Special Education Student Teaching (12 hrs).
Notes: 1) EDUC 415 fulfills the General Education Data Analysis requirement as well as the major requirement. 2) EDUC 232 fulfills the General Education SOSC 215 requirement as well as the major requirement.
Special Education Core Requirements:
SPED 243, Inclusion and the Schools (3 hrs); 318, Emergent and Early Reading Instruction (3 hrs); 352, Management Techniques in Special Education (3 hrs); 353, Nature and Needs of Learners with Mild/Moderate Exceptionalities (3 hrs); 355, Content Reading Strategies in Early Childhood Education (3 hrs); 376, Intervention Strategies for Special Learners in Middle/Secondary Schools (3 hrs); 405, Evaluation Strategies for Special Learners (3 hrs); 425, Diagnostic and Prescriptive Reading (3 hrs); 441, Communication and Collaboration in Special Education (3 hrs); 445, Integrated Social Studies and Language Arts for Children (4 hrs); 447, Integrated Mathematics and Science for Children (4 hrs).
Additional Requirements:
The following are also required in the program: MATH 112, Fundamentals of Mathematics (3 hrs) or proficiency; PE 210, First Aid and Safety (3 hrs) or valid Red Cross Certification; Workshops on Communicable Diseases and Child Abuse, (6 clock hrs each); EDUC 300, Children's Literature (3 hrs).
Notes: 1) EDUC 300 or EDUC 305 meets the General Education Literature Elective requirement as well as the major requirement and, 2) Those students pursuing an Intervention Specialist: Mild/Moderate Educational Needs license may also earn an Early Childhood Education license by completing the following courses: EDUC 245, 270, 336; SPED 312.
