The Malone College men’s basketball team earned a thrilling victory last Saturday at home by beating Ohio Dominican University 120-114 in overtime in its only game of the week. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 6-5 overall and to 1-1 in the AMC South Division and extended their home-game winning streak to four.
Against ODU, Malone trailed 57-49 at the half despite shooting 54.1% from the field. The squad clawed its way back in the second half and pulled even with the visitors at 93-all with four minutes remaining. With the game tied at 104-104 and six seconds left in regulation, ODU gained possession off a missed bucket by Malone but couldn’t get a shot off, sending the contest into OT. In overtime, the Pioneers hit a perfect eight of eight free throws to out-score the Panthers 16-10 en route to the 120-114 conference win.
Shane Conwell (Sr., Stow H.S.) led all scorers as he exploded for a career high 46 points (14-24 FG, 4-12 3-PT FG, 14-15 FT) in the contest, which was just seven points shy of the Malone single-game record of 53 points set by Dan Wingate (1995-96 season). Chris Miller (So., Hiland H.S.) tallied 29 points (10-15 FG, 1-2 3-PT FG, 8-10 FT) followed by Jason Mishler (Sr., Hiland H.S.) with 20. Jesse Schlabach (So., Lake H.S.) chipped in 11 points and paced the squad in rebounds with seven although Malone was edged in total rebounds 46-41. In addition, Mishler dished out 11 assists and collected five steals.
This week, Malone (6-5, 1-1 AMC S) will travel to Muskingum College to compete in the Muskingum Holiday Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, Malone will take on Houghton (NY) College (1-8, 0-1 AMC North) in an 8:00 p.m. contest, preceded by a 6:00 p.m. contest between Muskingum and Thiel (PA) College. On Wednesday, the tournament's consolation game is set for 1:00 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
This week’s opponents: Houghton (NY) - Malone leads the all-time series by a 5-0 margin and Houghton 76-62 (at Malone) in last year's matchup. Muskingum - Malone trails Muskingum 8-3 in this all-time series and the Fighting Muskies won the most recent meeting (12/20/02) by the score of 95-86. Thiel - Malone leads the all-time series 7-5. Cedarville - Malone holds a 51-29 advantage in the all-time series with Cedarville but lost a pair of contests to the Yellow Jackets last season, 82-74 (at Cedarville) and 102-89 (at Malone)...Cedarville has won the last three meetings between the teams.

The Malone College women’s basketball team lost its only contest of the week on the road to Shawnee State University 60-48 last Saturday. The Pioneers are now 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the AMC South Division.
At Shawnee State, Malone trailed by five points at the half (34-29) and was outscored 26-19 in the second period resulting in the 12-point defeat. Nikki Parson (So., Garaway H.S.) led the Pioneers with 17 points followed by Michelle Ling (Sr., Hiland H.S.) with nine points. Parson also paced the squad in rebounds with nine but Malone lost the battle of the boards 50-41. In addition, Ling added four assists and two steals.
This week, Malone (7-5, 1-2 AMC S) will travel to Seton Hill (PA) University (7-4, 2-0 AMC N) on Monday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
This week’s opponent: Seton Hill - Malone holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series with Seton Hill and defeated the Griffins 76-69 in last season's meeting...Malone has won the last four meetings between the teams.

Parson leads the team and the conference in free throws at 91.4 %...In addition, Ling is shooting an impressive 43% from three-point range (34 of 79)...Malone ranks fourth in scoring offense in the AMC at 76.4 points per game, second in field goal percentage at 47.5% and first in free throw percentage at 80.6%.
