The Malone College women's cross country team captured a fourth-place finish among a 28-team field at the NAIA National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky last Saturday while the Pioneer men's squad took 16th among its 28-team field. The women tallied a score of 218 points as Simon Fraser (B.C.) University won the women's team title with 95 points. The Malone men scored 376 points as Virginia Intermont College won the men's national title with 54 points.
In the women's event, Concordia (NE) University took second with 129 points, The University of British Columbia (CAN) placed third (161) and Azusa Pacific (CA) University rounded out the top five with 247 points. In the men's race, Aquinas (MI) College finished in the runner-up spot with 175 points, Lindenwood (MO) University was third (213), Simon Fraser (B.C.) took fourth (215) and Azusa Pacific rounded out the top five with 237 points. Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) and Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) each earned their second straight NAIA All-America honors as the duo finished in eighth-place (18:02.65.) and 15th-place overall (18:21.65), respectively. Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) finished in 49th place in a time of 18:56.15, Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) came in 98th in 19:38.90 and Loren Reineke (So., Anna H.S.) rounded out the Malone scoring as she finished 117th overall in 19:50.90. Also competing for the team were Ashley Thomas (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) in 141st (20:00.70) and Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora Gilboa H.S.) in 180th (20:19.35). For the men's team, Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) earned his first NAIA Cross Country All-America accolade (after two NAIA Track & Field All-America honors) as he finished 16th overall in 25:20.10 while Bryan Straniero followed with a 68th-place time of 26:21.50. Also scoring for Malone were Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.), in 114th (26:54.35), Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) in 146th (27:11.70) and Greg Howard (Sr., GlenOak H.S.) in 157th (27:19.70). Curtis Mortenson (Sr., Kodiak, Alaska) and Michael Coates (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) also competed for the squad and finished in 186th (27:41.45) and 195th (27:48.40), respectively. The two Malone teams finished fifth in the Combined Team award, which adds the two team placements together, with Malone finishing with a score of 20 (4th place + 16th place). Only four other colleges/universities, which had both teams competing at nationals, finished with a higher combined total than the Pioneers. In addition, the Malone women' s team finished second in the NAIA Cross Country Scholar Team Award, which averages the cumulative GPA of the top five finishers of each team competing. Malone men's and women' s veteran head coach Jack Hazen was also awarded the USA Track & Field Association's NAIA Region IX Coach of the Year honors for both men and women at the meet. NOTE: Former Malone College cross country and track & field standout and multi-All-American Ira Wentworth was officially inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame during the NAIA National Championships weekend. Men’s Basketball Wins Home Opener Against Roberts Wesleyan 84-76 The Malone College men’s basketball team defeated Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College 84-76 at home last Saturday, holding off a furious Raider rally down the stretch, in the team's only contest of the week. With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 1-2 overall and remain at 0-0 in the AMC South Division.
Against Roberts Wesleyan, Malone held a 45-31 advantage at the half, extended the lead to over 20 early in the second half and then weathered a second half surge by the Raiders for the non-conference win. Chris Miller (So., Hiland H.S.) recorded a game-high 22 points to pace four Pioneers in double figures. Jason Mishler (Sr., Hiland H.S.) tallied 18 points followed by Shane Conwell (Sr., Stow H.S.) with 14 points and Craig Giesy (So., Bristol H.S.) with ten. James Hannum (So., Perry H.S.), Shane Humphrey (Fr., Loudonville H.S.) and Mishler grabbed eight rebounds each as the battle of the boards ended in a 42-42 tie. Mishler also dished out four assists while Miller collected five steals. This week, Malone (1-2, 0-0 AMC S) will compete in the Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Malone will face host Palm Beach Atlantic at 7:00 p.m. and then, on Saturday, will take on Flagler (FL) College in a 1:00 p.m. contest. Women’s Basketball Splits A Pair Beating St. Vincent 87-53 And Losing to Siena Heights 72-70 The Malone College women’s basketball team overpowered St. Vincent (PA) College 87-53 at home last Tuesday but fell to Siena Heights (MI) University 72-70 on the road last Saturday in its only two games of the week. With the 1-1 week, the Pioneers are now 3-3 overall and remain at 0-0 in the AMC South Division.
Against St. Vincent, the Pioneers shot 60% from the field to take a commanding 48-20 lead at halftime. In the second period, Malone shot 50% and outscored St. Vincent 39-33 en route to the 87-53 victory. Nikki Parson (So., Garaway H.S.) led all scorers with 17 points (5-8 FG, 7-8 FT) followed closely behind by Michelle Ling (Sr., Hiland H.S.) with 16 points (7-9 FG, 1-2 3-PT FG, 1-2 FT). Abbey Moore (Jr., North Canton H.S.) contributed 12 points while Erica Mishler (So., Hiland H.S.) added more. Malone dominated the boards 46-31as Shauna Masonbrink (Sr., Canton South H.S.) grabbed a game-best nine rebounds. In addition, Ling dished out a game-high seven assists and posted three steals. Against Siena Heights, the Pioneers trailed 38-31 at the half and despite being down by as many as 15 points in the second half, came up just short in the 72-70 loss. Ling paced all scorers with 26 points followed by Parson with 20 points. Ling also dished out a game-leading nine assists. In addition, Parson ripped down 14 boards as Malone outrebounded Siena Heights 48-35. This week, Malone (3-3, 0-0 AMC S) will travel to Cedarville University on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in its only contest of the week. |
