The Malone College men's and women's cross country teams, led by veteran head coach Jack Hazen, both captured the American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX championship meet in Latrobe, PA last Saturday with the men's squad winning an incredible 36th straight time, a conference championship streak that is likely unmatched in any college sport at any level. In addition, coach Hazen was voted the AMC Coach of the Year for both men and women. With the team victories, both squads earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky November 20th.
The Malone men, ranked 18th in the final NAIA poll, tallied 48 points for their victory as Shawnee State University finished runner-up with 73 points among the 14-team men's field. Cedarville University, ranked 14th in the NAIA, placed third with 89 points. St. Vincent (PA) College came in fourth with 98 points and Walsh University rounded out the top five with 140 points. The Malone women, ranked #3 in the NAIA, went 1-2-3 and totaled an impressive 33 points to defeat runner-up Cedarville (ranked #11), which finished with 57 points among the women's 15-team field. Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College took third with 91 points, Geneva (PA) College was fourth with 108 points and Shawnee State rounded out the top five with 163 points. For the Malone men, who had numerous top athletes battling injuries or illnesses throughout the past few weeks, mustered the race of the season to capture the title as Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.), on crutches earlier in the week, won the individual title in a time of 25:56, 21 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. Bryan Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) was next for Malone, in fifth place, in a time of 26:52. Both runners earned First Team All-Conference honors. Two Pioneer men earned Second Team honors as Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) finished eighth overall in 27:20 and Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) took 10th in 27:26. Other runners for Malone included Greg Howard (Sr., GlenOak H.S.) in 24th (27:56), Curtis Mortenson (Sr., Kodiak, Alaska) in 30th (28:06) and Michael Coates (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 44th (28:38). For the Malone women, Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) won the individual title for the second straight year in a time of 18:19, nine seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) who posted a time of 18:28. Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) was right behind in third place in 18:30. The three earned First Team All-Conference honors for their efforts. Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) earned Second Team honors by placing 11th overall in 19:49. Laura Boatwright (Sr., Berkshire H.S.) and Loren Reineke (So., Anna H.S.) both earned Honorable Mention accolades by finishing 16th (20:04) and 17th (20:08), respectively. Ashley Thomas (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) also competed for the squad and finished 19th in 20:10. This week, the teams will compete in the NCCAA National Championships in Yellow Springs, Ohio on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. Women’s Soccer Beats Lyndon State 1-0 In OT; Loses To Houghton 4-0 In NAIA Region IX Semifinal Match
The Malone College women’s soccer team defeated Lyndon State (VT) College 1-0 in overtime at home last Tuesday in an NAIA Region IX playoff game to move into the region final four hosted by Houghton (NY) College last Friday and Saturday. The squad then headed to Houghton on Friday to compete in the NAIA Region IX Final Four but fell to the NAIA ninth-ranked Houghton squad, which was a perfect 17-0 coming into the contest (with 16 straight shutouts), by the score of 4-0. Houghton went on to win the tournament by defeating Mt. Vernon Nazarene University 5-1 to advance to the 21st Annual NAIA National Championships on Nov. 17-23 at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Malone finishes its season with a 14-5-2 mark overall and a 5-1-1 record in the AMC South Division.
Against Lyndon State, the two squads battled the wet weather as well as each other to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. However, just two minutes into overtime, Julie Herbst (So., Dyer, IN) found the back of the net off a feed from Ali Mueller (Jr., Mason H.S.) to secure the Pioneer victory. Malone blasted 24 shots on goal while goalie Laurie Franklin (Sr., Prospect, KY) collected one save. Lyndon State took just one shot and made 23 saves. At Houghton, the Pioneers trailed 2-0 at halftime and surrendered two more goals in the second half en route to the 4-0 loss. Malone recorded six shots on goal and Franklin posted 22 saves. Houghton took 26 shots on goal and made six saves. Volleyball Falls To Tiffin 3-0; Posts 0-4 Mark At NCCAA National Tournament
The Malone College volleyball team lost a road match to Tiffin University 19-30, 31-33, 11-30 last Tuesday to conclude its regular season play and then headed to West Palm Beach, Florida to compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. During the first day of pool play last Thursday, the eighth-seeded Pioneers fell to fourth- seeded Indiana Wesleyan University 29-31, 30-28, 31-33, 23-30. Later that day, Malone lost to ninth-seeded Dallas Baptist (TX) University 16-30, 25-30, 30-23, 29-31. On Friday, the Pioneers were beaten by number one seed Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University 21-30, 22-30, 18-30 and by fifth-seeded The Master’s College 17-30, 29-31, 23-30. The Pioneers have a current 26-19 record overall and finished with a 9-7 mark in the AMC South Division. The team will compete in the AMC Tournament, hosted by AMC North Division champion Daemen (NY) College, on Friday and Saturday (tournament schedule TBA).
At Tiffin, Ashley Yocum (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) paced the squad in kills with 11 followed by Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) with 10. The defense was also paced by Chafins and Beebe with 15 and 12 digs, respectively. Setter Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) collected 30 assists. Against Indiana Wesleyan, Beebe slammed down a match-high 18 kills followed by Chafins with 17 kills while Ianniello collected 50 assists. Defensively, Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) and Beebe scooped up 18 digs each followed by Chafins with 17 digs and Yocum with 16. In the Dallas Baptist match, Yocum paced the offense with 18 kills followed closely behind by Beebe with 17 kills. Beebe also added a team-high five service aces while Ianniello posted 49 assists. Chafins tallied a match-high 27 digs followed by Beebe with 23 digs. Against Palm Beach Atlantic, Chafins recorded 12 kills and 10 digs. Beebe posted a team-best 11 digs and Ianniello added 30 assists. In the final tournament match of play for the Pioneers against The Master’s, Beebe paced the offense with 11 kills. O’Hara added three aces while Ianniello collected 32 assists. The defense was led by Chafins with 21 digs followed by O’Hara with 18 digs. This week, Malone (26-19, 9-7) will compete in the AMC Tournament, hosted by Daemen (NY) College on Friday and Saturday (tournament schedule TBA). Football Falls To Taylor 23-15 The Malone College football team lost to Taylor (IN) University 23-15 on the road last Saturday. The Pioneers rushed for 112 yards on 33 carries and passed for 147 yards for a total of 259 offensive yards while Taylor rushed for 190 yards on 51 carries and passed for 46 yards for a total of 236 yards. With the loss, Malone drops to 3-6 overall and to 1-5 in the MSFA Mideast League.
The only points scored in the first quarter came off a 31-yard interception return by Taylor for a touchdown (PAT good) with just 48 seconds remaining. In the second stanza, Taylor scored on an 11-yard TD reception (PAT good) to extend its lead to 14-0. The Pioneers answered with a three-yard run by RB Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) into the end zone. The PAT by Shawn O’Halloran (Fr., Poland Seminary H.S.) was good and reduced the lead to 14-7 at the half. Taylor then added another six points on a 17-yard TD rush (PAT failed) for a 20-7 advantage at the end of the third quarter. In the final period, Taylor added a 39-yard field goal to increase the lead to 23-7 with just 2:25 left to play. However, the Pioneers continued to fight and traveled 56 yards in nine plays for a three-yard TD pass from Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) to Alphonso Owen (Fr., Cleveland Heights H.S.). Reifsnyder then completed the two-point conversion to Owen for a final score of 23-15. Reifsnyder completed 17 of 32 passes, including one touchdown and two interceptions, for 147 yards. Wide receiver John Regas (Jr., Lake H.S.) led the squad in receptions with six catches for 85 yards followed by Owen with four receptions for 36 yards, including a touchdown. Smith paced the ground attack with 143 yards on 23 carries, including a touchdown. On defense, LB Jamal Gambrell (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.) tallied a team-best 15 tackles, including seven solo tackles. Defensive back Mitch Fusek (Sr., Canfield H.S.) posted nine tackles (four solo, one sack) while LB Jordan Phillips (So., United H.S.), LB John Barkey (So., Northwest H.S.) and DL Brian Landies (So., Chardon H.S.) each recorded tackles for a loss. This week, Malone (3-6, 1-5 MSFA Mideast) will conclude its 2004 season at home against Quincy (IL) University (4-6, 2-4) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Women’s Basketball Loses Season Opener To Trevecca Nazarene 91-80
The Malone College women’s basketball team, led by second-year head coach Lori Wynn, opened the 2004-05 season with a 91-80 road loss at Trevecca Nazarene (TN) University last Friday. With the loss, the Pioneers are 0-1 overall (0-0 AMC South).
At TNU, Malone trailed 44-32 at halftime as the Trojans shot 66.7% from the field. The Pioneers outscored TNU 48-47 in the second half but could not overcome the 12-point halftime deficit in the 91-80 loss. Michelle Ling (Sr., Hiland H.S.) led the offensive attack with a game-high 30 points (11-18 FG, 8-13 3-PT FG). Ling's eight three-pointers in the contest tied the Malone school record set by Tonya Miller in the 1997 season (vs. Geneva). Nikki Parson (So., Garaway H.S.) added 15 points followed by Abbey Moore (Jr., North Canton H.S.) with 10 points. N. Parson grabbed a team-best six rebounds followed by Ashley Parson (Fr., Garaway H.S.) and Nicki Sisson (Fr., Wayne Trace H.S.) with five rebounds each as Malone won the battle of the boards 29-23. Erica Mishler (So., Hiland H.S.) and Moore each dished out four assists while Ling collected three steals. This week, Malone (0-1, 0-0 AMC S) will travel to Carlow (PA) University for a 7:00 p.m. tip off and will then host the Malone College Tip-Off Classic this Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers will play Spring Arbor (MI) University on Friday at 5:00 p.m. while Indiana Wesleyan University plays Ursuline College at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Ursuline will meet Spring Arbor at 2:00 p.m. while Malone faces Indiana Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m. |
