The Malone College women’s soccer team lost at home to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University 3-0 last Tuesday in the team's regular-season finale but then squared off against Seton Hill (PA) University (away) on Saturday in an AMC Qualifying Tournament contest. In that game, the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in regulation (and through two overtime periods) but the visiting Pioneers advanced to the NAIA Region IX Tournament via penalty kicks. Malone is now 14-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the AMC South Division.
Against MVNU, in a game that decided the AMC South Division regular-season title, Malone trailed 2-0 at the half and gave up a goal in the 86th minute of play in the 3-0 loss. The Pioneers tallied 12 shots on goal while goalie Laurie Franklin (Sr., Prospect, KY) collected 17 saves. MVNU took 19 shots and made 12 saves. In the playoff game at Seton Hill, the Pioneers trailed 1-0 at the half but Julie Herbst (So., Dyer, IN) tied the game at 1-1 in the 72nd minute of play off a feed from Abbie Zippert (Jr., Cleveland Heights H.S.). Seton Hill answered with a goal in the 75th minute to regain the lead (2-1) but Amanda Zabukovec (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) sent the game into overtime with a goal off a free kick in the 89th minute. Neither team could find the back of the net in either the first or second overtime periods. So, with the score tied at 2-2, the teams competed in a penalty kick shootout to determine who would advance to the NAIA Region IX tournament. Seton Hill made two of five penalty kicks while Malone made three of five to advance. Herbst, Zippert and Taryn Carlson (So., Poland H.S.) each converted their PK's for the Pioneers. This week, Malone (13-4-2, 5-1-1 AMC S) will host Lyndon State (VT) College (8-5-4) in a first round game of the NAIA Region IX Tournament at 3:00 p.m. The winner of this #4 Malone vs. #5 Lyndon State contest will advance to the NAIA Region IX Final Four (hosted by Houghton, NY, College Nov. 5-6) and will face #1 Houghton (17-0-0) on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (#2), 16-3-0, will face Tiffin University (#3), 11-5-1, in the other semifinal game at 4:00 p.m. The NAIA Region IX championship game is set for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Volleyball Loses To Walsh 3-0 And To Cedarville 3-2; Earns At-Large Bid To NCCAA Nationals
The Malone College volleyball team fell to Walsh University 30-12, 33-31, 30-28 at home last Tuesday and lost a hard fought match to NAIA #19 Cedarville University 30-27, 23-30, 30-28, 28-30, 13-15 at home last Friday in its only two matches of the week. With the 0-2 week, the Pioneers are now 26-14 overall and 9-6 in the AMC South Division.
In addition, the team received notice early last week that it had earned an at-large bid to the 10-team NCCAA National Tournament, hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University Nov. 4-6. Malone earned the #8 seed and will face #4 Indiana Wesleyan University on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. in its first pool-play game. Against Walsh, Ashley Yocum (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) and Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) paced the offense with eight kills apiece. In addition, Yocum added three service aces while Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) collected 27 assists. Defensively, Amber Chafins (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) led the squad with 17 digs followed by O’Hara with 16 kills and Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) with 15. Against Cedarville, Beebe and Chafins paced the offense with 21 and 20 kills, respectively. Ianniello amassed 60 assists while Beebe and Yocum each posted three aces. On the defensive side, Chafins scooped up a team-best 20 digs. This week, Malone (26-14, 9-6 AMC S) will travel to Tiffin University on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match in its final regular-season game. The team will then travel to Palm Beach, Florida to compete in the NCCAA national tournament November 4-6 (match times listed above). The Pioneers will also compete in the American Mideast Conference Tournament November 12-13 (site at AMC North Division champion). Football Falls To Undefeated St. Francis (IN) 40-6
The Malone College football team lost last Saturday on the road to the University of St. Francis (IN), which is currently ranked #2 in the NAIA with a record of 8-0, by the score of 40-6. The Pioneers rushed for 209 yards on 42 carries and posted 101 yards passing for 310 total yards. St. Francis gained 279 yards rushing and 139 yards passing for 418 total yards. With the loss, Malone falls to 3-5 overall and to 1-4 in the MSFA Mideast League.
St. Francis rushed for a five-yard TD (PAT good) with just under three minutes left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. In the second stanza, the Pioneers closed the gap to within one point (7-6) on back-to-back 22-yard field goals by Shawn O’Halloran (Fr., Poland Seminary H.S.). However, the Saints stormed back with a 34-yard pass reception into the end zone (PAT good) to end the half with a 14-6 advantage. In the second half of the game, Malone could not add to its point total but USF tallied four more rushing touchdowns. The Saints scored on two six-yard rushes and one 11-yard rush in the third period and were successful on two of three PATs. The Cougars also added a five-yard run into the end zone (PAT failed) midway through the final period to record the 40-6 win. Quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) completed 14 of 26 passes (two interceptions) for 101 yards. Fullback Terrence Glover (Sr., Hamilton High West H.S.) grabbed four passes for 13 yards followed by Nyrell Knight (Sr., Akron North H.S.) with three receptions for 22 yards. Running back Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) rushed for 191 yards on 25 carries to lead the ground attack. Defensively, LB Kevin Andrysek (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) collected a team-best nine tackles (six solo) followed by DB Jason Frantz (Jr., Perry H.S.) with eight tackles and a pass break-up. Defensive back Mitch Fusek (Sr., Canfield H.S.) added seven tackles, including a sack. This week, Malone (3-5, 1-4 MSFA Mideast) will face Taylor (IN) University (0-8-0, 0-5-0) in an away contest on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. (no time difference). Men’s Soccer Beats Waynesburg 4-1; Falls To Urbana 3-1
The Malone College men’s soccer team defeated NCAA Division III Waynesburg (PA) College 4-1 last Monday at home but fell to Urbana University 3-1 on the road last Saturday in its season finale. The Pioneers complete their season with an 8-10 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the AMC South Division.
Against Waynesburg, Malone held a 3-1 advantage at the half and scored again late in the game for the 4-1 win. Kevin Fischer (Jr., Jackson H.S.) netted three of Malone’s four goals, including the game-winner for a hat trick. Greg Carroll (Fr., Dunfermline, Scotland) pocketed the first goal in the fourth minute of play and assisted on two of Fischer’s goals. David Duley (Fr., Inverurie, Scotland) assisted on Carroll’s goal. The Pioneers tallied 14 shots on goal while keeper Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) recorded five saves. Waynesburg took seven shots and made eight saves. At Urbana, Greg Carroll (Fr., Dunfermline, Scotland) gave Malone the early 1-0 lead off a cross from Kevin Fischer (Jr., Jackson H.S.) in the 10th minute of play. Urbana tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal at the 26:50 mark and the score remained tied at 1-1 at halftime. In the second stanza, Urbana scored in the 47th and 73rd minutes to secure the 3-1 victory. The Pioneers posted eight shots on goal while goalie Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) collected three saves. Urbana took seven shots and made five saves. |
