The Malone College volleyball team defeated Geneva (PA) College 30-27, 30-15, 27-30, 30-22 at home last Monday to open its week and then beat the University of Rio Grande 20-30, 30-18, 30-14, 30-18 last Tuesday on the road. The squad finished the week at Shawnee State University where they earned two more victories on Saturday defeating Shawnee State 25-30, 30-23, 31-29, 31-29 and Urbana University 35-37, 30-22,30-24, 30-27. With the perfect 4-0 week, Malone improves to 26-12 overall and to 9-4 in the AMC South Division.
Against Geneva, Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) paced the team with 18 kills and five service aces while Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) collected 46 assists. On the defensive side, Amber Chafins (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) led the way with 28 digs. At Rio Grande, Beebe again tallied 18 kills and five service aces while Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) added seven service aces. In addition, Ianniello tallied 49 assists. Defensively, Beebe and Chafins paced the squad with 19 and 18 digs, respectively. At Shawnee State, Beebe tallied 24 kills while Beth Wold (Sr., Olean, NY) recorded four aces and Ianniello added 43 assists. Chafins scooped up 24 digs to pace the defense. Against Urbana, Chafins tallied 22 kills followed by Beebe with 21. Ianniello amassed 68 assists. Chafins also led the defense with 27 digs while Ashley Yocum (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) posted four blocks. This week, Malone (26-12, 9-4 AMC South) will host Walsh University on Tuesday and Cedarville University on Friday with both contests beginning at 7:00 p.m. In addition, Malone just found out today that it has qualified as an at-large participant in the 10-team NCCAA National Tournament hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University November 4-6. Malone is the eighth-seed in the event. Women’s Soccer Posts 3-0 Mark On The Week The Malone College women’s soccer team earned three more victories last week in as many contests. The Pioneers began the week with an 8-0 shutout over Shawnee State University at home last Tuesday. Next, the squad beat Southern Virginia University 2-0 (away) on Thursday and defeated Ohio Dominican University 2-1 in double overtime at home on Saturday. With the 3-0 week, Malone improves to 13-3-1overall and to 5-0-1 in the AMC South Division.
Against SSU, the Pioneers led 5-0 at the break and added three goals in the final period for the 8-0 win. Julie Herbst (So., Dyer, IN) scored in just the second minute of play. By halftime, Herbst had already tallied a hat trick and added two goals in the second stanza (five goals total) and an assist. Donna Swift (Fr., Hartlepool, England) scored an unassisted goal and assisted on two of the goals by Herbst. Kara Wenger (So., St. Clairsville H.S.) found the back of the net off a pass from Brittany Leitzke (Sr., Jackson H.S.) for the final goal of the first half. In the second half, Julia Wade (Fr., Clearfork H.S.) scored in the 70th minute off a rebounded shot by Herbst taken from a cross by Ali Mueller (Jr., Mason H.S.). In addition, Abbie Zippert (Jr., Cleveland Heights H.S.) contributed two assists in the contest, one in each half. Goalies Laura Franklin (Sr., Prospect, KY) and Crystal Russell (Jr., Lexington H.S.) each recorded one save while the Pioneers took 17 shots on goal. SSU took one shot and made 11 saves. At Southern Virginia, Herbst took a feed from Zippert for the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of play. In the second half, Zippert found Amanda Zabukovec (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) for Malone’s second goal of the game and the 2-0 victory. The Pioneers posted 21 shots on goal and Franklin made six saves. Southern Virginia took six shots and made 15 saves. In addition, Franklin increased her Malone individual shutouts record (career) to 35 games. Coming into the season, she was tied at 33 with Aubby Rosado (1998-2000). Against ODU, Malone gave up a goal in the 24th minute but came right back with a goal in the 26th minute for a 1-1 tie. The score remained tied until the 107th minute (during the second overtime) when Herbst took a pass from Mueller and found the back of the net from the corner to secure the 2-1 win in double overtime. Herbst also scored Malone’s first goal off a pass from Taryn Carlson (So., Poland H.S.). With her two goals on the day, Herbst, in only her second season, tied the Malone individual record for most goals scored in a career with 51 (Megan Young also had 51 from 1997-2001). Franklin posted seven saves in the game while the Pioneers took 16 shots on goal. ODU took eight shots and tallied 14 saves. This week, Malone (13-3-1, 5-0-1 AMC S) will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University at home on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. to close out its regular season. Malone has qualified for the AMC playoffs but will not know the date and location until Wednesday. Women's Cross Country Wins Southeastern Classic; Men Place Fourth
The Malone College women's cross country team, ranked #3 in the NAIA, captured the team title among a 19-team field at the Southeastern Classic in Versailles, Kentucky last Saturday while the Pioneer men's squad, ranked #7 in the NAIA, took fourth place among a 22-team men's field.
In the women's event, Malone tallied 37 points to earn the title as Cedarville University took second with 57 points. Cumberland (KY) College finished third with 139 points and Berry (GA) College placed fourth at 159 points. In the men's race, Virginia Intermont College took the championship with 35 points while Cumberland was runner-up with 94 points. Cedarville edged Malone for third-place with 107 points while the Pioneers posted 119 points. For the women, Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) finished second overall in a time of 18:19 while Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) took third in 18:34. Also scoring for Malone was Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) in fifth (19:03), Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora Gilboa H.S.) in seventh (19:23) and Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 23rd (20:04). No other results were available. For the men, Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) led Malone with a third-place finish overall in a time of 25:11 while Bryan Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) took 15th in 26:50. Also scoring for Malone was Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) in 22nd (27:07), Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) in 26th (27:14) and Michael Coats (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 59th (28:31). No other results were available. This week, the teams are off and will next compete in the AMC/NAIA Region Championships on Saturday, November 6th in Greensburg, PA. Football Loses In Final Seconds To Urbana 30-27
The Malone College football team lost a heartbreaker to MSFA Mideast League foe Urbana University at Fawcett Stadium last Saturday as the visiting Blue Knights pulled off a dramatic victory in the final seconds to take home a 30-27 victory. On a fourth-and-15 play at the Malone 18-yard line, Urbana struck for a touchdown after the quarterback scrambled and hit his receiver in the end zone, amidst plenty of Malone jerseys, with just eight seconds remaining in the game to give Urbana the win.
The Pioneers gained 101 yards rushing and 189 yards passing on the day for 290 total yards while the Blue Knights rushed for 171 yards and posted 146 yards passing for a total of 317 yards. With the tough loss, Malone’s record now stands at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the MSFA Mideast. Urbana scored on a 21-yard rushing touchdown (PAT good) with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter to take an early 7-0 lead. Midway through the second stanza, the Pioneers tied the game at 7-7 with a five-yard TD pass from Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) to Alphonso Owen (Fr., Cleveland Heights H.S.). Shawn O’Halloran (Fr., Poland Seminary H.S.) kicked the extra point for Malone. However, Urbana came back with a 17-yard TD pass (PAT good) to end the half with a 14-7 advantage. In the third quarter, the Pioneers once again tied the game at 14-14 on a one-yard pass from Reifsnyder to Nyrell Knight (Sr., Akron North H.S.) while O’Halloran added the extra point. The Blue Knights regained the lead at the 7:48 mark of the fourth quarter on a six-yard run into the end zone (PAT good). The Pioneers quickly countered with their own touchdown as Reifsnyder connected with John Regas (Jr., Lake H.S.) for a 17-yard TD reception. However, O’Halloran’s PAT was blocked and run back for two points giving Urbana a 23-20 lead. Malone continued to battle and regained the lead (27-23) with 1:34 remaining in the game as Knight snagged his second TD pass (nine yards) from Reifsnyder (PAT good). Then with just eight ticks of the clock remaining, Urbana scored on an 18-yard pass (PAT good) to secure the 30-27 victory. Reifsnyder was 18 of 31 passing for 189 yards, including four touchdowns and two interceptions. Knight grabbed a team-best five receptions for 54 yards and two TD’s followed by Regas with four catches for 43 yards and one TD. Owen contributed three receptions and one TD. RB Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) was the squad’s leading rusher with 114 yards on 20 carries. Defensively, DB Chris Cruise (Fr., Field H.S.) paced the team with nine tackles (eight solo) and a pass break-up followed by LB Jamal Gambrell (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.) with nine tackles (five solo). DB Mitch Fusek (Sr., Canfield H.S.) tallied seven tackles (five solo, one TFL), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a sack while DL Brian Landies (So., Chardon H.S.) added four tackles, forced a fumble and blocked a field goal. This week, Malone (3-4, 1-3 MSFA Mideast) will travel to the NAIA #2 ranked University of St. Francis (IN), with a record of 7-0 (4-0 MSFA Mideast), on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. CST kickoff. Men’s Soccer Loses To Rio Grande, Ohio Dominican
The Malone College men’s soccer team lost 6-0 on the road to #1 NAIA nationally ranked University of Rio Grande last Wednesday and then fell to Ohio Dominican University 3-0 at home on Saturday. With the 0-2 week, Malone drops to 7-9-0 overall and to 1-6-0 in the AMC South Division.
At Rio, Malone trailed 2-0 at the half and allowed four goals in the second half in the 6-0 loss. The Pioneers took just two shots on goal while goalkeeper Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) tallied 10 saves. Rio took 21 shots and made one save. Against ODU, Malone trailed 2-0 at the half en route to the 3-0 loss. The Pioneers took four shots while LaCroix made eight saves. ODU took 15 shots and made one save. This week, Malone (7-9-0, 1-6-0) will host Waynesburg (PA) College at 3:00 p.m. on Monday and conclude its 2004 regular season with a road trip to Urbana University for a 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday. Women's Golf Finishes Runner-Up At NAIA Regional Tournament; Heather Grovemiller Wins Individual Title To Qualify For NAIA Nationals The Malone College women's golf team, led by second-year head coach Max Baker, hosted the NAIA Region IX Tournament at the Zoar Village Golf Course in Zoar, Ohio on Monday, October 18th but the Pioneers came up just short in winning the title among an eight-team field. Malone posted a total score of 368 for the 18-hole event as Walsh University won the team title with a 361 to earn the automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships in South Bend, Indiana May 17-20, 2005. Malone's Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) qualified for the NAIA national event, though, by virtue of her individual first-place finish at the regional tournament as she posted a score of 84 (41-43) and won in a playoff over Tiffin University's Kelly Rethman who also had an 84 (46-38). Tiffin placed third as a team at 373 while Seton Hill (PA) University was fourth at 375. Ohio Dominican University came in fifth at 404, St. Vincent (PA) University claimed sixth place at 426, Notre Dame (OH) College was seventh at 428 and Ursuline College finished in eighth place (no team score). Heather Hall (Fr., Bellefontaine H.S.) finished second for Malone and 11th overall, narrowly missing All Conference honors, as she tallied a score of 93 (45-48). Jenna Eason (Fr., Pahrump, Nevada) fired a 95 (47-48), Carie Kindler (Fr., Sheridan H.S.) carded a 96 (47-49) and Megan Grubb (Fr., Lake H.S.) finished with a 101 (52-49). |
