At the NCCAA National Championships in Panama Beach City, Florida last Monday and Tuesday, the Malone College men's golf team rallied from seven shots down to claim the 2004 NCCAA Men’s Golf Championship conducted on The Hombre Golf Club. Closing with a second round 299, the Pioneers finished at 603 for the two-day event among a 21-team field. That total topped first-day leader, Indiana Wesleyan University , by one shot. IWU had a second day total 307 to go with their 297 from day one, giving them a final score of 604.
Spring Arbor University made a phenomenal run at the crown with an event-best 292 total as the Cougars finished at 605 overall. Following Spring Arbor was The Masters (CA) College (610), Bethel (IN) College (619) and Southern Wesleyan University (621). Individual honors went to head coach Ken Hyland of Malone who was named NCCAA Coach of the Year and Travis Hemsoth of Indiana Wesleyan who claimed medalist honors with a 3-under par total of 141. Hemsoth led the 2004 All-American Team and was joined by nine others including Malone's Scotty Jones (So., East Palestine H.S.) who fired a 144 (75-69), Matt Wabby (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) who carded a 150 (72-78), and Keith Cunningham (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) who posted a 150 (76-74). Other competitors for the Pioneers were Aaron Strauch (Jr., Emporium, PA), who tallied a 159 (81-78), and Darren Phipps (Fr., Lake H.S.) who had a 169 (88-81). This marks Malone’s third NCCAA title as the Pioneers claimed the 1998 and the 1999 crowns. Ironically, the Pioneers finished runner-up in 2003 to The Masters College by one shot. Malone, which has now completed its fall campaign, also earned another honor as it was announced that the 2005 and 2006 NCCAA National Championships will take place at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette , Ohio with Malone serving as the host school. Football Picks Up 39-32 Win Over Ohio Dominican; Two Individual Malone Records Broken
The Malone College football team earned a 39-32 road win against Ohio Dominican University last Saturday as two individual records were broken in the process. The Pioneers gained 73 yards rushing and 352 yards passing for 425 total yards while the Panthers posted 137 yards rushing and 230 yards passing for 367 total yards. With the win, Malone improves to 3-3 overall and to 1-2 in the MSFA Mideast League.
After forcing and recovering a fumble at the ODU 16-yard line, Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) found Alphonso Owen (Fr., Cleveland Heights H.S.) for a touchdown to open the Malone scoring. Shawn O’Halloran (Fr., Poland Seminary H.S.) added the extra point to give Malone the early 7-0 advantage. On their next possession, the Pioneers traveled 50 yards in three plays ending in a 25-yard TD pass to Randy Kenepp (Fr., Ellet H.S.) from Reifsnyder. O’Halloran again added the extra point giving the Pioneers a 14-0 lead. ODU then cut the lead to 14-7 with three and half minutes left in the quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). However, Reifsnyder threw his third TD pass, a 35-yard reception to Owen (O’Halloran PAT good), with just 32 ticks of the clock remaining to put Malone up 21-7. In the second quarter, ODU outscored the Pioneers 12-3. A nine-yard TD pass (PAT failed) by the Panthers cut the lead to 21-13. O’Halloran then kicked a 37-yard field goal to make it 24-13. ODU finished out the half with two field goals of its own (39 and 37 yards, respectively) resulting in a 24-19 halftime score. At the end of the third stanza, the score remained 24-19 as neither team scored. Then at the 14:28 mark of the fourth quarter, ODU took its first lead of the contest (25-24) off an 11-yard TD rush (PAT failed). The Pioneers regained the lead with an eight-yard TD reception from Reifsnyder to Owen. Reifsnyder then hit Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) for the two-point conversion putting Malone up 32-25. The Panthers answered with a 10-yard run into the end zone (PAT good) to tie the game at 32-32. Then with just a little over one minute left in the contest, Reifsnyder again connected with Owen. This time for a 19-yard, TD reception (O’Halloran PAT good) to secure the 39-32 victory. Two individual Malone records fell as Reifsnyder completed 21 of 31 passes for 352 yards on the day, including a new Malone record five TD passes (old record was four by several). He also had no interceptions in the game. Owen also got into the Pioneer record books as he snagged eight passes for 163 yards, including a school-record four touchdown catches (old record was three by several). Terrence Glover (Sr., Hamilton High West H.S.) and Nyrell Knight (Sr., Akron North H.S.) added four catches each for 73 and 45 yards, respectively. Smith paced the Pioneer ground attack with 79 yards on 23 carries. Jeremy Rininger (Sr., Northwest H.S.) punted five times and averaged 33.8 yards per punt while O’Halloran was 1-1 in field goal attempts (37 yards). Defensively, OL Jeremy Rogers (So., Tusky Valley H.S.) paced the squad with nine tackles (3 TFL), two sacks, one pass break-up and a forced fumble while Jerome Moss (Sr., Firestone H.S.) added eight tackles, including six solo tackles. Linebacker Jordan Phillips (So., United H.S.) posted seven tackles and snagged an interception while DB RJ Swain (Sr., Barberton H.S.) tallied seven tackles and a pass break-up. Linebacker Kevin Andrysek (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) also recorded seven tackles and recovered a fumble. NOTE: Jeremy Rodgers was named the MSFA Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance last week. This week, Malone (3-3, 1-2 MSFA Mideast) will host Urbana University (2-5, 2-1 MSFA Mideast) at 1:00 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium. Women’s Soccer Defeats Ohio Valley 20-0; Ties Tiffin 1-1 In Double OT
The Malone College women’s soccer team scored a school-record 20 goals in a home game against Ohio Valley College last Monday and won by the score of 20-0 and then tied Tiffin University 1-1 in double overtime at home on Wednesday. The Pioneers are now 10-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the AMC South Division.
Against Ohio Valley, Malone scored 45 seconds into the match and led 12-0 at halftime en route to the 20-0 victory. Ten players scored for the Pioneers, including four goals and four assists by Julie Herbst (So., Dyer, IN). Ali Mueller (Jr., Mason H.S.), Megan Gasparin (Jr., Renfrew, PA) and Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Fr., Killorglin Co. Kerry, Ireland) each posted three goals while Katie Elson (So., Dorset, England) tallied two goals. Others with one goal each included Abbie Zippert (Jr., Cleveland Heights H.S.), Brittany Leitzke (Sr., Jackson H.S.), Donna Swift (Fr., Hartlepool, England), Kara Wenger (So., St. Clairsville H.S.) and Lauren Uhrman (Jr., Lambertville, MI). Malone recorded 19 assists with Mueller pacing the squad with five. Malone tallied 30 shots on goal while back-up keeper Crystal Russell (Jr., Lexington H.S.) collected two saves in the final half. Ohio Valley took two shots and made seven saves. Against Tiffin, Gasparin found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 14th minute of play to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. The Dragons scored their own PK goal in the 33rd minute for a 1-1 halftime tie. Both teams were held scoreless in the second half and throughout two overtime periods en route to the 1-1 tie. Malone posted 13 shots while goalie Laurie Franklin (Sr., Prospect, KY) recorded 14 saves. Tiffin took 15 shots and made 12 saves. This week, Malone (10-3-1, 3-0-1 AMC S) will host Shawnee State University at home at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The squad then travels to Southern Virginia University on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. match and returns home to face Ohio Dominican University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to close out the week. Men’s Soccer Loses 2-0 To Mt. Vernon Nazarene; Posts 0-2 Mark In Florida
The Malone College men’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University at home last Tuesday and then traveled to Florida for two contests last weekend. On Friday, the squad lost to Warner Southern (FL) College 2-1 and then fell to Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University 2-0 on Saturday. With the 0-3 week, Malone is now 7-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the AMC South Division.
Against MVNU, the Pioneers gave up goals in the 22nd and 29th minutes en route to the 2-0 loss. Malone tallied 14 shots and goalie Michael Porter (Fr., Highland H.S.) posted six saves. MVNU took 10 shots and made 10 saves. At Warner Southern, the teams were tied at 1-1 at the half en route to the 2-1 Pioneer loss. Warner scored in the 34th minute but David Duley (Fr., Inverurie, Scotland) countered with a goal off a feed from Jared Sage (Jr., Kidron Christian H.S.) in the 41st minute of play. Then Warner scored again late in the game for the 2-1 victory. Malone tallied seven shots on goal and goalie Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) posted seven saves. Warner Southern took eight shots and made four saves. At PBA, the Pioneers were shutout 2-0. PBA scored in the eighth minute and again in the 35th minute. The Pioneers recorded 11 shots and LaCroix collected six saves. PBA took 11 shots and made seven saves in the win. This week, Malone (7-7-0, 1-4-0 AMC S) will travel to NAIA #1 University of Rio Grande on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. match and will host Ohio Dominican University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. to close out the week. Volleyball Loses To Mt. Vernon Nazarene 3-0
The Malone College volleyball team fell to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University 30-26, 30-18, 30-27 last Thursday ay MVNU in its only contest of the week last week. With the loss, the Pioneers are now 22-12 overall and 6-4 in the AMC South Division.
At MVNU, Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) paced the offense with 13 kills while Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) collected 34 assists. Defensively, Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) tallied eight digs and posted four blocks. This week, Malone (22-12, 6-4 AMC S) will host Geneva (PA) College on Monday at 7:00 p.m. and will travel to the University of Rio Grande on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The team will close out the week by competing in a tri-event at Shawnee State University (with Urbana University) on Saturday. |
