Women's Cross Country Team Takes Third Among 39 Teams At Ohio Intercollegiates; Men Finish Seventh 
 
     The Malone College women's cross country team, ranked fifth in the NAIA nationally, posted an impressive third-place finish among 39 teams at the Ohio Intercollegiate meet in Delaware, Ohio last Friday while the Pioneer men's team placed seventh among its 39-team field.
     The Malone women tallied 137 points in a close women's event as Kent State University won the team title with 115 points and Ohio State University placed runner-up with 115 points.  Miami University came in fourth with 138 points while Bowling Green State University rounded out the top five with 156 points.
     Other AMC schools (with placement and points) included Cedarville University (10th - 308), Shawnee State University (27th - 790), Tiffin University (29th - 882), Walsh University (30th - 908), Notre Dame College (36th - 1134) and Ursuline College (38th - 1185).
     In the men's race, Ohio State easily took the team title with 38 points while the University of Cincinnati placed second with 102 points.  Kent State came in third with 131 points, Ohio University was fourth with 138 points and Ashland University rounded out the top five with 186 points.
     Other AMC schools (with placement and points) included Tiffin (11th - 342), Cedarville (14th - 417), Shawnee State (19th - 497), Walsh (20th - 508), Notre Dame (30th - 741) and the University of Rio Grande (31st - 826).
     For the Malone women, Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) finished an incredible second-place overall in a time of 18:26.3 as the winner (Ruth Limo of Cincinnati) crossed the tape in 18:08.8.  Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) finished second for Malone and 13th overall in 18:43.4 while Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) was 22nd in 19:09.8.  Also scoring for Malone was Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora Gilboa H.S.) in 33rd (19:23.1) and Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 67th (19:59.1).  Ashley Thomas (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) and Laura Boatwright (Sr., Berkshire H.S.) also competed for the varsity and finished 115th (20:36.5) and 128th (20:47.1), respectively.
     For the Malone men, Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) again paced the squad by placing 10th overall in a time of 26:19.2 while Bryan Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) followed in 25th place in 26:53.4.  Others who scored for Malone included Greg Howard (Sr., GlenOak H.S.) in 58th (27:40.0), Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) in 71st (27:56.2) and Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) in 78th (28:06.3).  Brandan Inboden (So., Heritage Christian H.S.) and Michael Coats (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) also competed for the varsity and finished 92nd (28:17.1) and 131st (28:59.8), respectively. 
     Two open races were also held as part of the event and numerous other Pioneer runners competed.  Competing in the women's open race were Lauren Sloan (So., Kent Roosevelt H.S.) in 9th (20:29.7), Loren Reineke (So., Anna H.S.) in 12th (20:42.7), Carrie Hart (So., La Brae H.S.) in 14th (20:48.1), Rachel Heflen (So., Orrville H.S.) in 68th (22:28.1), Sarah Parks (Jr., Revere H.S.) in 94th (22:57.8), Brittani Lyons (So., Elizabeth, NC) in 112th (23:27.3), Katie Hughes (So., Woodridge H.S.) in 123rd (23:59.0) and Katie Yarger (Sr., Ashland H.S.) in 136th (24:49.4).
     Competing in the men's open race were Matt Orwick (Fr., East Canton H.S.) in 89th (30:50.4), Tyler Lunn (Fr., McDonald H.S.) in 96th (30:54.7), Ian Miller (So., Marcus, TX) in 118th (31:49.5), Joe Siebert (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 135th (32:21.4), Jonathon Roth (Sr., GlenOak H.S.) in 148th (33:02.1), Nathan Hughes (So., Worthington Christian H.S.) in 157th (33:35.6) and Tim Laino (Fr., Chardon H.S.) in 195th (37:32.1).
     NOTE:  This year's meet was the 50th All-Ohio meet and all past individual champions were invited to attend the event.  Malone's Ira Wentworth and Joel Marchand attended the meet and are among five Malone runners to have won an individual All-Ohio title.  John Murray, Daniel Kibungei and Everlyne Lagat are the other three Pioneers to have accomplished the feat.
     This week, the teams are idle and will next compete at the South Eastern Classic in Versailles, Kentucky on Saturday, October 23rd.  
 
Men’s Soccer Falls To Walsh 2-0; Beats Geneva 3-2
 
     The Malone College men’s soccer team lost 2-0 at home last Tuesday to Walsh University but bounced back on Saturday to defeat Geneva (PA) College 3-2 at home in a homecoming contest.  With the 1-1 week, Malone’s record now stands at 7-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Walsh, the Pioneers trailed 1-0 at halftime and gave up a late goal in the second half resulting in the 2-0 conference loss.  Malone posted nine shots on goal while keeper Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) tallied three saves and backup goalie Michael Porter (Fr., Highland H.S.) recorded one save.  Walsh took seven shots on goal and made six saves.
     Against Geneva, Malone held a 1-0 lead at the half off a free-kick goal by Greg Carroll (Fr., Dunfermline, Scotland).  In the second half, Alex Ferrandez (So., Elche, Spain) scored back-to-back goals off through balls to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage.  Zach Rausch (Fr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) assisted on Ferrandez’s first goal while Carroll assisted on the second goal.  Geneva then scored twice late in the game but Malone held on for the 3-2 victory.  The Pioneers tallied nine shots on goal while keeper Porter made eight saves.  Geneva took 13 shots on goal and made five saves.
     This week, Malone (7-4-0, 1-3-0 AMC S) will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday in a 3:30 p.m. match.  The squad will then head to Florida to face Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Warner Southern (FL) College at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
 
Volleyball Posts 2-2 Record For The Week
 
     The Malone College volleyball team lost to Walsh University 30-28, 30-22, 35-33 last Tuesday at Walsh to open its week of action and came from behind to beat Ohio Dominican University (away) 28-30, 23-30, 30-22, 30-19, 15-12 on Thursday.  The squad then fell to Cedarville University 30-17, 30-25, 30-28 on Saturday and but beat Campbellsville (KY) University 30-24, 30-25, 30-28 (at Cedarville) later that day.  With the 2-2 week, Malone is now 22-11 overall and 6-3 in the AMC South.
     At Walsh, Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) and Amber Chafins (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) tallied 12 kills apiece to pace the offense while  Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) recorded 42 assists.  Defensively, Beebe posted 15 digs followed by Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) with 14 digs. 
     At ODU, Beebe slammed down 19 kills followed by Annie Messerall (Fr., Northridge H.S.) with 18 kills.  O’Hara and Chafins added 17 kills apiece while Ianniello amassed 75 assists.  Chafins scooped up 16 digs to pace the defense.
     At Cedarville, Chafins led the attack with 12 kills and anchored the defense with 22 digs.  Messerall contributed 10 kills while Ianniello collected 42 assists.  In addition, Beebe posted 21 digs and O’Hara added 19 digs.
     Against Campbellsville, Beebe tallied a team-best 17 kills and 18 digs.  Ianniello added 28 assists while Ashley Yocum (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) recorded five blocks and 17 digs.
     This week, Malone 22-11, 6-3 AMC S) will travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match in their only contest of the week.

Football Team Falls To Geneva 13-7
 
     The Malone College football team lost to Geneva (PA) College by the score of 13-7 at home last Saturday in the team's homecoming game.  The Pioneers gained 129 yards rushing and 283 yards passing for 412 total yards while the Golden Tornadoes tallied just 266 total yards (211 yards rushing, 55 yards passing).  With the loss, Malone’s record now stands at 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the MSFA Mideast.
     For most of the first quarter, the score remained 0-0. Then with just 34 seconds left, Geneva connected on a 22-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.  In the second stanza, on the final play of the first half, Geneva extended its lead with a 28-yard field goal resulting in a 6-0 halftime advantage.
     The Pioneers then opened the third quarter with an 85-yard TD pass from Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) to freshman WR Alphonso Owen (Cleveland Heights H.S.).  Jeremy Rininger (Sr., Northwest H.S.) added the extra point to give Malone a 7-6 lead
     In the fourth period, Geneva regained the lead on a five-yard TD rush (PAT good) at the 6:09 mark to secure the 13-7 victory. 
     The Pioneers nearly pulled out victory with a first and goal on the Golden Tornadoes' five-yard line with 30 seconds remaining in the game but, after two incomplete passes, the visitors picked off a Reifsnyder pass at the one-yard line on a third-down attempt to seal their victory over Malone.
     Reifsnyder completed 14 of 25 passes (one TD, one interception) for 283 total passing yards.  He also paced the team in rushing with 74 yards on 22 carries.  Running back Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) contributed 55 yards on 16 carries.  The Pioneer receivers were paced by three athletes as both Nyrell Knight (Sr., Akron North H.S.) and John Regas (Jr., Lake H.S.) caught five passes for 61 and 51 yards, respectively, while Owen snagged three passes for an impressive 164 yards, including Malone’s lone touchdown pass of 85 yards. 
     Defensively, LB Jim Fletcher (Sr., Canton South H.S.) led the squad with 13 tackles (7 solos, 1 TFL) and a pass break-up.  Linebacker Kevin Andrysek (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) tallied eight tackles, including a sack, while DB Mitch Fusek (Sr., Canfield H.S.) also posted eight tackles and a pass break-up.  In addition, defensive lineman Brian Landies (So., Chardon H.S.) added seven tackles (1 TFL) and forced a fumble.
     This week, Malone (2-3, 0-2 MSFA Mideast) will travel to Ohio Dominican University (0-5, 0-3 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. contest.
