Women’s Soccer Defeats Walsh 2-1; Beats Cedarville 3-1
 
     The Malone College women’s soccer team beat Walsh University 2-1 (away) last Wednesday in the annual local rivalry and then went on to defeat Cedarville University 3-1 on Saturday at Cedarville.  With the 2-0 week, the Pioneers have stretched their winning streak to eight games and are now 9-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the AMC South Division.
     At Walsh, the contest was tied 1-1 at the half.  Malone struck first on a goal by Abbie Zippert (Jr., Cleveland Heights H.S.) off a pass from Julie Herbst (So., Dyer, IN) in the 35th minute.  The Cavaliers came right back to score their only goal in the 39th minute of play resulting in the 1-1 halftime score.  Herbst then found the back of the goal off an assist by Megan Gasparin (Jr., Renfrew, PA) for the game-winner in the 79th minute.  The Pioneers posted 14 shots while keeper Laurie Franklin (Sr., Prospect, KY) totaled 12 saves.  Walsh posted 12 shots and 11 saves.
     At Cedarville, the two teams were tied at 1-1 at halftime as Cedarville struck first with a goal in the ninth minute before Gasparin tied the game in the 38th minute off a cross from Herbst.  In the second half, Crystal Thiry (Jr., Hubbard H.S.) booted the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute off a deflection from a shot by Lauren Uhrman (Jr., Bedford H.S.).  In the 77th minute, Gasparin added her second goal of the contest off a feed from Donna Swift (Jr., Hartlepool, England) to secure the 3-1 victory.  Franklin tallied 13 saves while the squad shot 19 times.  Cedarville took 12 shots and made 16 saves.
     This week, Malone (9-3-0, 3-0-0 AMC South) is idle.  The Pioneers will host Tiffin University October 13th at 3:00 p.m.
 
Men’s Soccer Records 1-0 Shutout Over Seton Hill; Falls To Cedarville 3-2
 
     The Malone College men’s soccer team defeated Seton Hill (PA) University 1-0 last Monday at Seton Hill but lost 3-2 to Cedarville University on the road Saturday.  With the 1-1 week, the Pioneers are now 6-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 the AMC South Division.
     At Seton Hill, Kevin Fischer (Jr., Jackson H.S.) scored the lone goal of the game in the 16th minute of play to secure the Pioneer victory.  Malone tallied seven shots while goalie Steve LaCroix (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) made 10 saves as  Seton Hill took eight shots on goal and made five saves.
     At Cedarville, the game remained tied 0-0 at the half after a tough defensive battle.  In the second half, Cedarville scored three straight goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead by the 68th minute of play.  Alex Ferrandez (So., Elche, Spain) headed in a corner kick from Greg Carroll (Fr., Dunfermline, Scotland) in the 73rd minute to cut the lead to 3-1 and David Duley (Fr., Inverurie, Scotland) booted in another Pioneer goal off a feed from Nate Watson (Jr., CVCA) to bring Malone to within one (3-2) in the 88th minute.  However, with only two minutes remaining, the Pioneers could get no closer and suffered the 3-2 loss.  Malone posted nine shots and LaCroix recorded six saves in the contest while the Yellow Jackets took six shots and made five saves.
     This week, Malone (6-3-0, 1-2-0 AMC South) will host Walsh University on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and Geneva (PA) College, as part of Malone’s Homecoming, on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
 
Volleyball Beats Rio Grande And Shawnee State; Falls To Urbana
 
     The Malone College volleyball team earned an AMC South victory in straight sets 30-19, 30-25, 30-24 over the University of Rio Grande last Tuesday at home in the first of three matches on the week.  The squad then defeated Shawnee State University 30-17, 30-24, 30-18 in a match played at Urbana University on Saturday before losing to host Urbana later that day 30-32, 30-24, 25-30, 26-30.  With the 2-1 week, the Pioneers are now 20-9 overall and 5-1 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Rio, Brandie Beebe (Sr., Indian Creek H.S.) paced the offense with 18 kills while Beth Wold (Sr., Olean, NY) recorded five service aces.  Katie Wright (Fr., Dover H.S.) tallied a team-best 26 assists followed by Beth Ianniello (Sr., Ridgewood H.S.) with 17 assists.  Beebe also led the defense with 15 digs while Ashley Yocum (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) and Annie Messerall (Fr., Northridge H.S.) each posted three blocks.
     Against SSU, Beebe led the attack with 17 kills while Ianniello posted four service aces and tallied 32 assists.  In addition, Amber Chafins (So., Jonathan Alder H.S.) anchored the defense with 17 digs while Yocum added six blocks. 
     At Urbana, Beebe once again paced the offense with 17 kills followed closely by Chafins with 16 kills.  Defensively, Chafins scooped up 17 digs while Racquel O’Hara (So., Claymont H.S.) tallied 16 digs.  Ianniello collected 49 assists for the Pioneers.
     This week, Malone (20-9, 5-1 AMC S) will travel to Walsh University on Tuesday and to Ohio Dominican University on Thursday.  Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.  Malone concludes the week at Cedarville University on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. match.
 
Football Team Loses To Walsh 27-17
 
     The Malone College football team fell to Walsh University 27-17 last Saturday (in a home game for Walsh) in the annual battle for the Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy.  The Pioneers suffered the loss despite tallying 190 more offensive yards than the Cavaliers.  Malone gained 89 yards rushing and posted 326 yards passing for a total of 415 yards while Walsh acquired 142 yards rushing and 83 yards passing for a total of 225 yards.  With the setback, Malone is currently 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MSFA Mideast League.
     The Pioneers opened the scoring midway through the first period with a 33-yard field goal by Jeremy Rininger (Sr., Northwest H.S.).  After the Pioneers forced and recovered a Walsh fumble, Malone's Brad Reifsnyder (So., North Canton H.S.) connected with Nyrell Knight (Sr., Akron North H.S.) for a 36-yard TD pass on a crucial third and long play.  Rininger added the point after to end the quarter with Malone up 10-0.
     In the second period, Walsh rushed for back-to-back touchdowns of two and three yards, respectively.  The first PAT was good but Malone blocked the second PAT to make the score 13-10 in favor of Walsh.  The Cavaliers then snagged an interception and returned it 84 yards for another touchdown (PAT good) for a 20-10 advantage at the half.
     At the 6:42 mark of the third stanza, Walsh ran for a three-yard TD (PAT good) to extend the lead to 27-10.
     The Pioneers fought back as RB Eric Smith (Sr., Chardon H.S.) scored on a five-yard rush (PAT good) to cut the lead to 27-17 but Malone could get no closer. 
     Reifsnyder was 26 of 43 passing for 326 yards including one touchdown and three interceptions while wide receiver Mike Clapham (Fr., Elyria Catholic H.S.) paced the squad in receiving with 91 yards on seven receptions followed by Knight with 88 yards on five catches, including one touchdown.  Smith led the ground game with 48 yards on 10 carries including a touchdown.  Reifsnyder added 32 yards of his own on the ground on 17 carries. Rininger averaged 45 yards per punt and connected on his lone field goal attempt of 33 yards.
     Defensively, LB Jim Fletcher (Sr., Canton South H.S.) led the way for Malone with 16 tackles, including eight solos and three tackles for a loss while linebacker Kevin Andrysek (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) contributed 12 tackles (5 solos) and forced a Walsh fumble.  Defensive back Chris Cruise (Fr., Field H.S.) and DB Jerome Moss (Sr., Firestone H.S.) grabbed an interception while four other players had pass deflections.  Evan Moxie (Sr., GlenOak H.S) recorded a blocked field goal while Brian Landies (So., Chardon H.S.) posted a sack and Jeremy Rodgers (So., Tusky Valley H.S.) added a fumble recovery.
     NOTE: In a special pre-game recognition, DB Marty Kanetsky (Sr., Hubbard H.S.) was Malone's recipient of the annual Dick Gallagher Memorial Scholarship (a $500 award).
     This week, Malone (2-2, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) will host Geneva (PA) College (1-3, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) at 2:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming on Saturday.
 
Women's Cross Country Takes 10th At Loyola Invitational; Men Place 14th
 
     The Malone College women's cross country team, which is currently ranked fifth in the NAIA national poll, earned a 10th-place finish with 253 points among a 24-team field at the Loyola (IL) University Invitational last Saturday while the Pioneer men's team, ranked third in the NAIA, placed 14th with 387 points among their 25-team field. 
     In the women's event, Marquette University took the team title (79), Ball State University was second (134) and Southwest Missouri State University took third (138).  Kent State University placed fourth overall (177) and Loyola rounded out the top five (184).
     Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) paced the Pioneer women with a 20th-place finish overall in a time of 18:00 while Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) finished 23rd in 18:06.  Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) took 41st in 18:28, Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora Gilboa H.S.) was 65th in 18:51 and Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) rounded out the team's scoring with a 104th-place finish in 19:32.   No other competitors or times were available. 
     In the men's meet, Loyola took the championship with a score of 93 as Grand Valley State University took second at 112.  Universal Sole/Reebok placed third with a 115 total, Indiana State University placed fourth at 151 and Drake University rounded out the top five at 166.
     Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) earned a sixth-place finish overall in a time of 24:41 to pace the Pioneer squad while Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) was next for Malone in 76th place in 26:13.  Greg Howard (Sr.., GlenOak H.S.) followed with an 80th-place finish in 26:15, Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) finished in 103rd (26:40) and Brandan Inboden (So., Heritage Christian H.S.) rounded out the team's scoring with a 122nd-place finish in 27:10.  No other competitors or times were available.
     This week, the teams will compete in the 50th anniversary of the Ohio Intercollegiates held in Delaware, Ohio on Friday.  The women's race will start at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's race at 2:45 p.m.
 
Men's Golf (B) Places Fifth At Westminster Invitational; Malone A Defeats Walsh In Dual Match
 
     The Malone College men's golf B squad competed at the Westminster (PA) College Invitational last Monday and earned a fifth-place finish among a 12-team field and then the Malone A unit posted a victory over Walsh University in a dual match (at Walsh) last Thursday. 
     At Westminster, the Malone B team tallied a score of 318 for its fifth-place finish as host Westminster (A) won the event at 306.  Clarion (PA) University placed second at 307, Washington & Jefferson (PA) College took third at 313 and Slippery Rock (PA) University was fourth at 315.
     Malone's Scotty Jones (So., East Palestine H.S.) carded a 79 (41-38) while Jeff Butler (Sr., Centerburg H.S.) also tallied a 79 (41-38) to pace Malone while Scott Shenker (Jr., Twinsburg H.S.) and Caleb Tevis (So., Athens H.S.) posted rounds of 80.  Matt Strayer (Fr., Riverside H.S.) tallied an 82.  In addition, two Pioneer athletes competed as individuals at the event as Grant Gates (So., River Valley H.S.) fired a round of 75 to tie for second overall while Jordan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) posted an 81.
     At the Walsh dual match, the Malone A team posted a score of 292 to defeat Walsh's runner-up A unit, which had a 304, by 12 strokes.  The Malone B team was third at 308 followed by the Walsh B squad at 332.
     Malone "A" was paced by Matt Wabby (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA), who recorded a 69 to earn medalist honors, followed by Darren Phipps (Fr., Lake H.S.) with a 70.  Aaron Strauch (Jr., Emporium, PA) tallied a75, Matt Dutton (Fr., Elkhart, IN) posted a 78 and Keith Cunningham (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) carded an 80.
     For the Malone B team, Jones led the way with a 74 while Gates was close behind at 76.  Butler and Shenker each posted 79's while Tevis came in at 84.
     This week, the Malone B team will compete at the PowerAde Fall Classic on Friday (8:00 a.m.) and Saturday (8:00 a.m.).
 
Women's Golf Places Runner-Up At Ohio Dominican Invitational
 
     The Malone College women's golf team posted a second-place finish among four teams at the two-day Ohio Dominican University Invitational last Friday and Saturday as the Pioneers chalked up a score of 734 (366-368) while Walsh University took the team title with a 704 (349-355).  Tiffin University was third at 751 (375-376) and Ohio Dominican placed fourth at 801 (400-401).
     Carie Kindler (Fr., Sheridan H.S.) paced Malone with a sixth-place score of 181 (90-91) while Megan Grubb (Fr., Lake H.S.) and Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) tied for seventh place with 182's.  Grubb's scores were 90 and 92 while Grovemiller had an 87 and a 95.  Heather Hall (Fr., Bellefontaine H.S.) tallied a 190 (100-90), Jenna Eason (Fr., Pahrump, Nevada) posted a 202 (99-103), Marissa Brown (Jr., John Glenn H.S.) fired a 221 (115-106) and Carinna Baldner (Fr., Hillsdale H.S.) carded a 126 (106-120).
     This week, the team is idle but will next compete at the Tiffin University Invitational on Monday, October 11th.
