The Malone College women's basketball team defeated Tiffin University 63-62 last Tuesday at home but fell in a heartbreaker by the score of 63-60 to NAIA Div. II 17th-ranked University of Rio Grande at Rio on Saturday. With the 1-1 week, Malone’s record is now 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the AMC South Division. Men’s Basketball Beats Tiffin 82-78, Loses To Rio Grande 94-81 The Malone College men’s basketball team defeated Tiffin University 82-78 at home last Tuesday and lost to the University of Rio Grande 94-81 on Saturday. Malone is now 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the AMC South Division. Against Tiffin, the Pioneers held a slim 38-37 advantage at halftime en route to the 82-78 win. Shane Conwell (Sr., Stow H.S.) led the offense with 31 points followed by Chris Miller (So., Hiland H.S.) with 22 points. Conwell and Brian Allerding (So., Loudonville H.S.) each grabbed nine rebounds but Malone lost the battle of the boards 40-35. In addition, Jason Mishler (Sr., Hiland H.S.) handed out six assists while Conwell posted five steals. At Rio, Malone trailed by six (45-39) at the half and was outscored 49-42 in the second stanza. Conwell led the way with 21 points followed by Miller with 18 points. No Pioneer player grabbed more than four rebounds as the Redmen dominated the boards 43-27. This week, Malone (11-6, 2-3 AMC S) will travel to Walsh University (10-5, 4-1 AMC S) on Tuesday for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off and will then host Shawnee State University (8-10, 2-3 AMC S) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers finish out the week with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off at Wilberforce University (4-14, 0-6 AMC S) on Saturday. This week’s opponents: Walsh - Walsh leads the all-time series with Malone 50-38 but the two teams split the two-game series last year with Malone winning game one 78-59 (at Malone) and Walsh taking game two (Mayors' Cup game) by the score of 78-73 in overtime. Shawnee State - Malone leads this all-time series 23-6 but the teams split the pair last year with Malone winning 77-70 in overtime (at Malone) and SSU winning 79-75 (at SSU). Wilberforce - Malone leads the series 15-10 and the team split the two-game series last year with Malone winning the first outing 95-65 (at Wilberforce) and Wilberforce taking game two 103-88 at Malone. Malone notes: Shane Conwell leads the team (and is second in the AMC) in scoring at 23.6 points per game followed by Chris Miller at 20.4...James Hannum paces the squad in rebounds at 6.2 per outing...Jason Mishler leads the team in assists at 5.0 per game...Malone leads the conference in free throw percentage at 78.1%...the Pioneers have a current six-game home winning streak (undefeated at home this year). |
