Women’s Basketball Records 2-1 Week; Michelle Ling Surpasses 2,000-Point Mark

The Malone College women’s basketball team posted two wins in three contests last week as they opened by defeating Tiffin University 73-64 on Tuesday (away).  The Pioneers fell to Urbana University 74-56 at home, though, on Thursday but concluded the week on a positive note with a convincing 90-76 home victory over Wilberforce University on Saturday.  With the 2-1 week, Malone is now 14-11 overall and 7-7 AMC South Division.  The Pioneers are currently in fifth place in the AMC South.  The top finisher in each of the AMC North and South Divisions at the end of the regular season earns an automatic berth to the NAIA Div.II National Tournament.  Teams placing second through fifth in each division qualify for the AMC Tournament.  The winner of the AMC Tournament then also earns a berth to the NAIA national event.
At Tiffin, the Pioneers held a 31-24 advantage at the half en route to the 73-64 victory.  Nikki Parson (So., Garaway H.S.) led Malone with a game-high 22 points.  Michelle Ling (Sr., Hiland H.S.) posted 21 points in the contest to push her career total over the 2,000-point barrier to 2,010.  Ling is just the second Malone women’s basketball player to reach the 2,000-point plateau for a career (Gloria Banks, 1979-83, is the other with 2, 459 points).  Ling also dished out four assists and collected three steals.  Ashley Parson (Fr., Garaway H.S.) also hit twin figures with 10 points.  N. Parson grabbed nine rebounds but the Pioneers lost the battle of the boards 37-27.
Against Urbana, Malone trailed 31-25 at halftime and never recovered in the second half in the 74-56 defeat.  N. Parson scored 16 points followed by Kellyn Murphy (Fr., St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) with 11 points.  Murphy also grabbed a team-best six boards as both teams posted 32 rebounds.  Ling handed out six assists and made three steals.
Against Wilberforce, Malone led 47-33 at the half and went on to win 90-76 to avenge an earlier loss (75-65) this season at Wilberforce.  N. Parson led all scorers with 25 points (8-13 FG, 9-12 FT) followed by Ling with 21 points (5-10 FG, 1-4 3-PT FG, 10-10 FT).  Mishler contributed 17 points, including three from behind the arc while Shauna Masonbrink (Sr., Canton South H.S.) added 15 points.  N. Parson recorded seven boards as Malone edged the Bulldogs in rebounds 41-40.  In addition, Murphy dished out three assists and collected three steals.
This week, Malone (14-11, 7-7 AMC S) will host Walsh University (11-12, 5-8 AMC S) on Tuesday in the ninth annual Mayors’ Cup contest beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The Pioneers will then travel to Urbana University (13-12, 8-5 AMC S) on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. game.
This week’s opponentsWalsh – Malone holds a slim 30-27 advantage in the all-time series but Walsh has won the last five meetings including a 75-64 contest (at Walsh) earlier this season.  In the Mayors' Cup series, the teams are deadlocked at 4-4...Walsh has won the last two Mayors' Cup games, including a 64-53 win at Walsh last year, and can retire the Cup (three straight Mayors' Cup wins) with a win against Malone in this year's battle...Malone has retired the Cup once while Walsh has yet to retire the Cup.  Urbana - Urbana leads this series 20-12 and beat the Pioneers 74-56 at home last week.
Malone notes:  Michelle Ling leads the team in scoring at 19.7 points per game (4th in AMC) followed by Nikki Parson at 18.7 per contest...N. Parson tops the squad in rebounds at 9.2 per contest (4th in AMC)… Ling also paces the team in assists at 4.2 per game while N. Men’s Basketball Posts 2-1 Week

The Malone College men’s basketball team recorded two victories in three contests last week starting off with a tough 86-83 loss to Tiffin University on Tuesday (away).  The Pioneers then cruised to a 100-82 victory over Urbana University at home on Thursday and also defeated Wilberforce University 94-65 at home on Saturday to extend its current home-game winning streak to 10 games (all 10 this season).  With the 2-1 week, Malone’s record now stands at 16-11 overall and 7-7 in the AMC South Division.
At Tiffin, the Pioneers trailed 45-41 at halftime and came up just short in the 86-83 loss as a three-point attempt at the buzzer fell off the iron.  Shane Conwell (Sr., Stow H.S.) and Tyler Renner (Fr., Garaway H.S.) each tallied 23 points to pace Malone.  Jason Mishler (Sr., Hiland H.S.) added 13 points, dished out seven assists and recorded three steals.  In addition, Renner grabbed nine rebounds but the Dragons dominated the boards 48-31.
