The Malone College men's and women's track & field teams sent a total of 22 athletes (12 men, 10 women) to the 40th annual men's and 25th annual women's NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee last Thursday through Saturday and six Pioneer athletes came home with All-America honors. A pair of race walkers posted the first All-America honors on Friday as Ashley Thomas (Jr., Kodiak, AK) finished fourth in the 3,000-meter race walk in a time of 16:21.37 while Lindsey Hipp (Jr., Amherst H.S.) placed sixth in 17:20.68. Brittani Lyons (So., Elizabeth City, NC) also competed in the event and finished ninth in 19:34.88. Ray Weisenbarger (Jr., Troy Christian H.S.) also collected All-America accolades on Friday as he finished fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 55' 6.5". Weisenbarger also competed in the shot put but did not qualify for the finals with a throw of 50' 0". On Saturday, Malone added three more All-America honors to the list as Amy Arnold placed fourth in the 3000 meters in 10:13.26 while (Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) and Dave Gramlich (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 5000 meters with times of 15:03.62 and 15:08.63. Bryan Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) also qualified for the 5000 finals but finished ninth in 15:26.87. For the women's team, others who competed included Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) who finished seventh in the 3000 meters in a personal-best time of 17:41.24 and Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) who took eighth in the same event in a personal-best time of 17:56.74. Sarah Decker competed in the 5000-meter prelims but did not make the finals with a time of 18:43.78. Brooke Gasser (So., Norwayne H.S.) competed in the indoor pentathlon and finished 11th among 14 competitors with 3044 points and she also competed in the 55-meter dash prelims with a time of 7.50 seconds (did not advance). Brittany Davies (So., Cedarville H.S.) posted a time of 2:23.28 in the 800-meter prelims but did not advance while Laura McElrath (Fr., Tallmadge H.S.) posted a leap of 17' 4.75" in the long jump (did not advance to finals). For the men's team, others who competed included Curtis Mortenson (Jr., Kodiak, AK), Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) and Justin Baum (Fr., Chagrin Falls H.S.) who each ran in the 5000-meter prelims but did not advance to the finals with times of 15:41.66, 16:02.40 and 16:26.28, respectively. Matt Orwick (Fr., East Canton H.S.) competed in the 3000-meter prelims but did not advance with a time of 9:09.04. In addition, Brady West (Fr., West Muskingum H.S.) competed in the pentathlon and finished in 14th place with 3368 points, Nathan Hughes (So., Worthington Christian H.S.) competed in the 3000-meter race walk and finished eighth in 18:55.27and Jason Conklin (Fr., Cuba, NY) competed in the high jump but did not clear the opening height. The Malone men's and women's teams will open their outdoor seasons by competing at the Cedarville University Invitational on March 25th. The Malone College baseball team competed in the first two games of its 12-game schedule in Port Charlotte, Florida last Saturday during its annual spring break trip. The squad opened the trip by splitting the two contests. In their first outing, the Pioneers were blanked by Madonna (MI) University 6-0 but regrouped to defeat Purdue (IN) University - North Central 2-1 in the nightcap. Malone’s overall record is now 4-6 (0-0 AMC N).
Against Madonna, the Pioneers committed three errors and allowed five hits in the 6-0 loss. Korey Heppeard (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) started on the mound and absorbed the loss for Malone. The squad did tally eight hits, including two hits each from Billy Kern (Sr., Pompano Beach, FL) and Jason Verner (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL). Against Purdue-North Central, the Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure the 2-1 win. Anthony Barson (Jr., Timken H.S.) started on the mound and was awarded the win while Jay Yorty (Fr., Lisbon David Anderson H.S.) entered in relief in the seventh to record the save. Andy Bourquin (Sr., Canton South H.S.) paced the offense with two hits and an RBI while Troy Richeson (Fr., Minerva H.S.) added a triple. This week, Malone (4-6, 0-0 AMC N) will continue its stint in Port Charlotte during which the squad is scheduled to play 10 more games (see "Malone College Sports This Week" above for schedule). The Malone College men's tennis team lost to Mt. Union College (away) last Monday by the score of 4-3 in its only match of the week. With the loss, Malone drops to 1-5 overall on the season. On Monday, the team will play Stonehill (MA) College at 12:00 p.m. and, on Tuesday, will face Northern Kentucky University at 11:00 a.m. The team will also compete against one other opponent which is yet to be determined.
The Malone College women's tennis team lost its only contest of the week last week, to Mt. Union College at home by the score of 8-1. With the loss, the team now stands at 1-2 on the season.
