The Malone College baseball team posted a 6-3 record last week while competing at the Port Charlotte (FL) Invitational as the squad wrapped up an 11-game stint, going 7-4, in Florida. On Monday, the Pioneers split a twin bill against Dakota State (SD) University winning 8-6 and losing 6-0. On Tuesday, the squad defeated Grace (IN) College 6-2 in its only contest of the day. Malone beat Tri-State (IN) University 4-3 in eight innings on Thursday and later that day fell to Madonna (MI) University 4-1. The team then defeated Bethany Lutheran (MN) College 11-3 and 6-2 on Friday before splitting its final doubleheader of the trip against Urbana University on Saturday, losing a hard fought game one 7-6 but regrouping to win the nightcap by the same 7-6 score. Malone is now 10-9 overall (0-0 AMC North).
Against Dakota State in game one, Malone scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 8-6 win. A trio of freshmen pitchers directed the game from the mound for the Pioneers. Jimmy Dowling (Tuslaw H.S.) picked up the win after relieving Jay Yorty (Lisbon David Anderson H.S.) in the fifth while Scott Heiberg (Garfield H.S.) recorded his first save of the season. Jason Verner (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL) was two-for-three followed by Mike Novak (So., Vermilion H.S.) with two hits and two RBI’s. Billy Kern (Sr., Pompano Beach, FL) also tallied two hits, including a double, while Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.) added a hit and two RBI’s. In the nightcap against Dakota State, the Pioneers allowed six runs on seven hits in the 6-0 loss. Zach Winkhart (Fr., Central Catholic H.S.) absorbed the loss (5.1IP, 7H, 5R, 3ER, 2BB, 3SO). Malone struggled at the plate, posting four hits led by Winkhart who had a double. Against Grace, the Pioneers recorded six runs on nine hits and committed no errors in the 6-2 win. Dan Walker (Jr., Ellet H.S.) earned his first win of the season after allowing just three hits in six innings while Heiberg picked up his second save. Winkhart paced the offensive attack with two hits and three RBI’s followed by Verner with two hits and an RBI. Five other Pioneers tallied one hit each. In the game against Tri-State, Kern cracked a triple to begin the bottom of the eighth inning and then scored off a single by Andy Wise (Jr., CVCA) to give Malone the 4-3 eight-inning victory. Heiberg pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his second win of the year. Kern also hit a double in the contest as did Jarrod Stahl (Jr., Kenmore H.S.). Against Madonna, Malone posted just three hits in the 4-1 loss. Andy Bourquin (Sr., Canton South H.S.) and Kern each stroked a double while Winkhart added a single. Barson suffered the loss after pitching five innings and allowing four runs (three ER) on six hits. In game one against Bethany Lutheran, the Pioneers tallied 11 runs on 14 hits for the 11-3 win. Bourquin was three-for-three with two RBI’s to pace the offense. Stahl was two-for three, including a home run and an RBI followed by Alton Thompson (Jr., Coshocton H.S.) with two hits and three RBI’s and Verner with two hits and one RBI. Five other Pioneers posted hits, including a home run by Andy Bruno (Jr., Walsh Jesuit H.S.). Yorty earned the win on the mound for Malone (4.1 IO, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 5BB, 4SO) while Heiberg posted his third save. In the second game against Bethany Lutheran, the Vikings committed six errors while the Pioneers tallied 10 hits in the 6-2 win. Josh McKeiver (Fr., Strasburg Franklin H.S.) went the distance on the mound (7IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 5SO) to earn his first victory in as many starts. Verner was two-for-three while Winkhart was two-for-four with two RBI’s. Ronnie Lewis (Sr., Rootstown H.S.) and Thompson also posted two hits each while Bourquin posted a double and Stahl a single. Against Urbana, Dowling absorbed the loss as Malone gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to being edged 7-6. Lewis paced the offense with a double and two RBI’s followed by Winkhart with two hits and an RBI. Bourquin added three hits while Stahl hit a double and posted an RBI. In the nightcap against Urbana, the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 7-6 win. The squad tallied eight hits and made no errors as Heiberg recorded his third victory. Offensively, Kern led the way with three hits and an RBI followed by Winkhart and Bourquin with two RBI’s each. This week, Malone's (10-9, 0-0 AMC N) scheduled doubleheader against Myers University on Tuesday (to have been played at Thurman Munson Stadium at 3:30 p.m.) has been cancelled. The Pioneers are scheduled to travel to Geneva (PA) College on Friday for a twin bill and then host a doubleheader against the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday. Games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on both days. The Malone College softball team recently competed in five games at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida over spring break and came home with an impressive 5-0 record, which is the best start for the program in its 14-year history. In addition, Malone posted an incredible four shutouts in the five contests and outscored its opponents 17-3.

On Tuesday, the squad beat Seton Hill (PA) University 8-3 and 1-0 and capped off the week with a 3-0 victory against Pikeville (KY) College on Friday. Against Elizabethtown, Malone tallied four runs on eight hits in the 4-0 win. Sarah Sweitzer (Jr., New Philadelphia H.S.) led the offense with three hits followed by Joslynn Friedl (Jr., Cranberry Twp., PA) with two hits and two RBI’s. Jeanelle Linder (Sr., Louisville H.S.) added a double while Holly Christopher (Fr., Garfield H.S.) and Andrea Diyorio (Sr., Austintown Fitch H.S.) each added a single. Heather Jones (Jr., Lexington H.S.) went the distance on the mound for the Pioneers allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win. In the nightcap against Elizabethtown, the Pioneers scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth for the 1-0 victory. Kristen Houtz (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) pitched the entire game for Malone allowing seven hits but no runs for her first win of the season. Offensively, the squad recorded just three hits led by Diyorio with a double. In game one against Seton Hill, the Pioneers tallied 10 hits and allowed six hits while Cori Helm (So., Marion, IN) earned the 8-3 victory. Katie Green (Jr., Oak Harbor H.S.) and Christopher each posted two hits while Sweitzer added a double and three RBI’s. Diyorio also posted a double while three others recorded singles. In game two of the twin bill against Seton Hill, Malone scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Linder connected for a single that scored Sweitzer for the 1-0 win. Jones earned her second victory by striking out seven batters and allowing just three hits. Against Pikeville, the Pioneers posted eight hits and just one error in the 3-0 win. Jones struck out 11 batters and allowed just four hits as she earned her third victory. Christopher was two-for-three while Sweitzer also tallied two hits and an RBI to pace the offense. This week, Malone (5-0, 0-0 AMC S) is scheduled to host a doubleheader against St. Vincent (PA) College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in its only contest of the week. The Malone College men's tennis team competed in three matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina over the recent spring break and posted a record of 1-2 for the trip. The team opened its trip with a 5-4 win over Milligan (TN) College but lost to Ohio Wesleyan University 7-2 in its second match. The squad then faced NCAA Div. II Northern Kentucky University but lost 9-0. The match scheduled with Stonehill (MA) College was cancelled. With the 1-2 week, the team now stands at 2-7 overall on the season.
