Men's Golf "A" Team Wins Own Invitational; B Team Second

     The Malone College men's golf team captured first place in its own Malone-Zoar Village Invitational on Friday and Saturday among a nine-team field with an outstanding two-day score of 585 (296-289) while the Pioneer B team finished second with a score of 599 (304-295).  Walsh A took third place at 605 (307-298), Madonna (MI) University was fourth at 625 (316-309) and Lakeland Community College rounded out the top five at 628 (314-314).
     Keith Cunningham (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) earned overall medalist honors with an impressive 36-hole score of 142 (with rounds of 72 and 70).  Jordan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.), of the Malone B squad, was second overall at 143, including a 76 and an incredible round of 67 on Saturday.
     Joining Cunningham and Grubb on the All-Tournament Team for Malone were Scotty Jones (So., East Palestine H.S.) in third at 146 (73-73) and Aaron Strauch (Jr., Emporium, PA) in fifth at 148 (75-73).
     Other Malone A scores included Scott Shenker (Jr., Twinsburg H.S.) at 151 (78-73) and Darren Phipps (Fr., Lake H.S.).  Pioneer B scores included Jeff Butler (Sr., Centerburg H.S.) at 149 (76-73), Matt Wabby (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) at 153 (76-77), Grant Gates (So., River Valley H.S.) at 154 (76-78) and Nate Garwood (So., Ridgedale H.S.) at 159 (81-78).
     In addition, four Malone players competed as individuals at the event -- including Caleb Tevis (So., Athens H.S.) at 151 (78-73), Matt Strayer (Fr., Riverside H.S.) at 160 (83-77), Garret Barbush (So., Mannheim, PA) at 160 (74-86) and Joel Gran (Fr., Lake H.S.) at 182 (94-88).
     This week, the Malone B team will compete at the Westminster (PA) College Invitational on Monday (12:00 p.m.) while the Malone A unit will compete at the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational on Friday (8:00 a.m.) and Saturday.

Baseball Posts 1-3 Record Against Walsh; Bob Starcher Memorial Day Held Saturday

     The Malone College baseball team lost a twin bill (2-0, 5-4) against Walsh University (at Walsh) last Thursday and then split a pair of home games on Saturday, winning the opener 3-1 but dropping the nightcap 4-1.  With the 1-3 week, the Pioneers are now 15-12 overall and 5-3 in the AMC North Division.
     The home doubleheader on Saturday marked the second annual Bob Starcher Memorial Day in honor of the late and former Pioneer baseball head coach.  Ceremonies included the recognition of the three Starcher Memorial Scholarship winners -- Anthony Barson (baseball), Leo Kormanik (male athlete-cross country) and Laura Wenger (female athlete-tennis).  In addition, Diane Starcher Merritt threw out the first pitch with her daughters Stephanie Shanower and Stacy Ragon and 10-month-old grandson Tyler James Shanower also in attendance.
     In game one at Walsh, Malone gave up three hits and two runs in the second inning en route to the 2-0 loss.  Korey Heppeard (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) absorbed the loss, his second on the season against two wins.  Offensively, the Pioneers tallied six hits, including a single and a double by Ronnie Lewis (Sr., Rootstown H.S.).  Billy Kern (Sr., Pompano Beach, FL) added two hits while Jason Verner (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL) posted a double.
     In the nightcap at Walsh, Malone led 4-3 going into the seventh inning but gave up two runs resulting in the 5-4 defeat.  Anthony Barson (Jr., Timken H.S.) pitched the first five innings but was relieved by Scott Heiberg (Fr., Garfield H.S.), who took the loss.  Kern paced the offense with a run scored, a double and two RBI’s.  Four other Pioneers posted singles.
     In the first game on Saturday, Malone scored two runs in the first inning and another in the third to go up 3-0 before Walsh got its only run of the game in the fourth inning as Malone posted the 3-1 win.  Kern tagged a triple and scored two runs while Bourquin tallied two RBI's (sacrifices).  Verner also had an RBI with a hit in the first inning.  Josh McKeivier (Fr., Strasburg Franklin H.S.) pitched a complete game (7 IP, 5 H, 5 K, 0 BB) to improve to 3-0 on the season.
     In game two on Saturday, Malone opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a single by Andy Wise (Jr., CVCA) that drove in Verner who had doubled to get on base.  Walsh picked up four runs, though, in the third through seventh innings to post the 4-1 win over Malone.  Lewis and Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.) had the other hits, both singles, for Malone.  Zach Winkhart (Fr., Central Catholic H.S.) pitched five innings (3 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 2 BB) and absorbed the loss (1-3 on the season).   Jay Yorty (Fr., Lisbon David Anderson H.S.) came on in relief and allowed one run (unearned) in two innings of work (0 H, 2 K, 2 BB).
     This week, Malone (15-12, 5-3 AMC N) will travel to NCAA Division III Wilmington College on Monday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.  The squad then hosts NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. (DH at Thurman Munson Stadium).  The Pioneers will finish out the week with a twin bill at home against Notre Dame (OH) College on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and then a doubleheader at Notre Dame on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Softball Splits Doubleheader Against St. Vincent

     The Malone College softball team split its home-opening doubleheader against St. Vincent (PA) College last Tuesday in its only action of the week.  The Pioneers were blanked 2-0 in the first game but battled back to win the nightcap 5-1.  Malone’s record is now 6-1 overall (0-0 AMC South).
     Against St. Vincent in game one, the Pioneers garnered just three hits in the 2-0 loss as the Bearcat pitcher tallied 12 strikeouts.  Heather Jones (Jr., Lexington H.S.) absorbed the loss, her first of the season, after allowing just four hits in seven innings.  Ashlee Locker (Fr., Strasburg H.S.), Holly Christopher (Fr., Garfield H.S.) and Jones each posted a single for Malone. 
     In the second game of the twin bill against St. Vincent, the Pioneers added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 5-1 victory.  Kristen Houtz (Jr., Hoover H.S.) pitched a complete game (7 IP, 5 H, R 1, ER 1, 0 BB, ) to earn her second win on the year.  Sarah Sweitzer (Jr., New Philadelphia H.S.) paced the offense with a double and a run scored while Kari Miller (Sr., East Canton H.S.), Jeanelle Linder (Sr., Louisville H.S.), Andrea Diyorio (Sr., Austintown Fitch H.S.) and Houtz each posted RBI’s.
     This week, Malone (6-1, 0-0 AMC S) will host Gannon (PA) University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. (DH) and will host Cedarville University on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. (DH rescheduled from 3/25). The Pioneers will then travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday for a twin bill beginning at 1:00 p.m. to close out the week.
 
Women's Track & Field Team Captures Cedarville Collegiate Open; Men Place Third

     The Malone College women's track & field team captured the Cedarville University Collegiate Open last Friday among an 11-team field while the men's team placed third among its 10-team field.  
     The Malone women tallied 151 points for their victory while Cedarville was second with 146 points.  Wright State University took third (145), Anderson (IN) University was fourth (71) and Taylor (IN) University rounded out the top five with 66 points.
     The Pioneer men racked up 134 points for their third-place finish as Cedarville won the men's event with 159 points.  Anderson was runner-up with 143.5 points, Taylor took fourth with 98.5 points and Wilmington was fifth with 62 points.
     For the women's team, three athletes took first-place finishes while two athletes posted NAIA automatic qualifying marks and another notched a provisional qualifying mark. 
     Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) captured first-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in an NAIA auto qualifying time of 11:20.30 while other NAIA national qualifiers included Lindsey Hipp (Jr., Amherst H.S.) in the 3000-meter race walk (3rd, 17:45.00) and Brittani Lyons (So., Elizabeth City, NC), also in the 3000-meter race walk (4th, provisional, 18:43.50).
     Joining Genter as event winners were Laura McElrath (Fr., Tallmadge H.S.) in the long jump (16' 2.5") and Brooke Gasser (So., Norwayne H.S.) in the javelin (126' 3").
     Second-place finishers included Megan Gasparin (Jr., Renfrew, PA) in the discus (115' 1"), Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora-Gilboa H.S.) in the 1500 meters (4:53.98) and Brittany Davies (So., Cedarville H.S.) in the 800 meters (2:20.68).
     Ashley Currence (So., East Canton H.S.) posted a third-place finish in the long jump (15' 11.5") while Sarah Nagle (Jr., Lakeside H.S.) took third in the javelin (96' 0").  In addition, Gasser placed third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.64 seconds while the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Kristina Barrett (Jr., Licking Valley H.S.), McElrath, Gasser and Davies took third in a time of 4:11.85.
     For the men's team, Ray Weisenbarger (Jr., Troy Christian H.S.) captured the lone first-place finish for the team with a victory in the discus with a throw of 146' 9" to win by more than 20 feet.  Weisenbarger also took second in the shot put at 48' 7.5".  Matt Orwick (Fr., East Canton H.S.) also posted a second-place finish in an event -- in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:13.00).
     Third-place finishers for the men included Josh Gortney (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in the pole vault (13' 6"), Chris Cruise (Fr., Field H.S.) in the 400-meter dash (52.05) and Cody Ford (So., Minerva H.S.) in the 100-meter dash (11.64).
     This week, the Malone teams will compete at the Ohio University Invitational in Athens, Ohio on Saturday.
