Malone loses to: Slippery Rock (PA) University 5-4 CURRENT RECORD: 3-7 (1-0 AMC South) Men's Golf - Malone finished 11th (among 16 teams) at the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational last Friday (shortened to 18 holes only due to weather) Women's Golf - Malone finished fourth (among 10 teams) at the Capital University Invitational last Friday (shortened to 18 holes only due to weather) NOTE: For complete standings and statistics of Malone teams, visit www.amcsports.org. The Malone College baseball team won its doubleheader at home against Notre Dame (OH) College last Friday 8-1 and 13-3 (six innings) in its only action of the week. With the 2-0 week, the Pioneers improved to 17-12 overall and to 7-3 in the AMC North Division. In game one against Notre Dame, Malone posted 11 hits, including two doubles and a home run, in the 8-1 victory. Korey Heppeard (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) earned his third win on the mound allowing just one run on five hits and striking out seven batters. Andy Bourquin (Sr., Canton South H.S.) paced the offense with two hits (including the home run), three RBI’s and two runs scored. Four additional Malone athletes also had two hits apiece, including Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.) with a single, a double, a run scored and two RBI’s. In the nightcap, the Pioneers tallied 13 runs on 14 hits, including seven doubles, in the 13-3 win. Anthony Barson (Jr., Timken H.S.) got the win (5IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 6SO, 3BB) to improve to 3-2 on the year. Bourquin again led the offense with two hits (one double), three RBI’s and a run scored followed by Andy Wise (Jr., CVCA) and Alton Thompson (Jr., Coshocton H.S.) each with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. This week, Malone (17-12, 7-3 AMC N) will play at Notre Dame on Monday at 6:00 p.m. (make-up) and will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers then travel to Seton Hill (PA) University on Friday (1:00 p.m.) and return home to host Seton Hill on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. All games are doubleheaders. The Malone College softball team split a doubleheader at home last Wednesday against Gannon (PA) University, winning game one 3-1 and losing game two 3-1, and then dropped two games to Cedarville University 5-1 and 8-1 on Thursday. With the 1-3 week, Malone falls to 7-4 overall and to 0-2 in the AMC South Division.
Against Gannon, the Pioneers tallied eight hits and no errors in the 3-1 win as Kristen Houtz (Jr., Hoover H.S.) earned her third win on the year (4IP, 3H, 0R, 1SO). Katie Green (Oak Harbor H.S.) led the attack with two doubles, two RBI’s and a run scored. Kathryn Bzdafka (Fr., Avon Lake H.S.) also posted a double and scored while five other Pioneer players recorded singles. In the nightcap against Gannon, Malone gave up three runs on seven hits in the 3-1 loss as Cori Helm (So., Marion, IN) absorbed the loss (7IP, 7H, 3R). The Pioneers tallied just five hits with Andrea Diyorio (Sr., Austintown Fitch H.S.) posting the lone RBI. In game one against Cedarville, Malone allowed five runs on 13 hits in the 5-1 loss. Heather Jones (Jr., Lexington H.S.) took the loss giving up 11 hits in five innings pitched. Sarah Sweitzer (Jr., New Philadelphia H.S.) paced the offense with two hits (one double) followed by four others with singles. Diyorio scored the lone run off Ashlee Locker’s (Fr., Strasburg H.S.) single. In game two against the Yellow Jackets, Malone again allowed 13 hits and committed three errors in the 8-1 defeat. Houtz absorbed the loss, her first on the season, as she allowed six runs on eight hits. Houtz also paced the offense with two hits, including a double, followed by Diyorio with a double and a run scored. This week, Malone (7-4, 0-2 AMC S) hosts Geneva (PA) College on Monday and the University of Rio Grande on Tuesday. Both contests begin at 3:00 p.m. The squad then travels to NCAA Division II Ashland University on Wednesday and to Notre Dame (OH) College on Thursday with games beginning at 3:00 p.m. both days. The Pioneers conclude the week at home on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Urbana University. All games are doubleheaders. Men’s Track & Field Team Places Third While Women Take Sixth at Ohio University Invitational The Malone College men’s track & field team placed third at the Ohio University Invitational last Saturday among a nine-team field while the women’s team placed sixth among its 11-team field. The Malone men tallied 103 points for third place while Ohio and Kent State shared first place with 151 points. The University at Buffalo took fourth (89) and the University of Rio Grande rounded out the top five with 57 points. The Pioneer women accumulated 55 points for their sixth-place finish as The University at Buffalo won the women’s event with 175 points. Kent State University was runner-up with 109 points, the University of Toledo took third with 103 points, Ohio University took fourth with 97 points and Marshall was fifth with 62 points. For the men’s team, two athletes took individual first-place finishes and one posted an NAIA provisional qualifying mark. Travis Shuff (Fr., Fredericktown H.S.) placed first in the high jump at 6' 2.75" while Leo Kormanik (Jr., Ellet H.S.) set a NAIA qualifying provisional mark in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:07.54. Brady West (So., West Muskingum H.S.) earned a first-place finish in the decathlon with 5794 points. Second-place finishers included Zeke Rhodes (Fr., Ft. Collins, CO) in the javelin with a throw of 140' 5" and Jay Brueckner (Fr., Crestview H.S.) in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 58.86. In addition, Chris Hare (So., Coopersville, MI) placed second in the decathlon with 5271 points.
Third-place finishers for the men were Adam Dunlap (Fr., Indian Valley H.S.) in the pole vault (12' 11.75"), Ray Weisenbarger (Jr., Troy Christian H.S.) in the discus (149' 2") and Mike Coates (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in the 1500 meters (4:08.23). For the women's team, Brooke Gasser (So., Norwayne H.S.) captured the title in the heptathlon with 4140 points while Laura McElrath (Fr., Tallmadge H.S.) took third. Two athletes posted NAIA automatic qualifying times in the 5000-meter run -- Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA), who finished third in 17:57.54, and Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) who took fourth in 18:01.45. Other top-three finishers for the women included Megan Gasparin (Jr., Renfrew, PA) who placed third in the discus (119' 0"). The Malone College men's tennis team defeated Tiffin University in a home match last Friday by the score of 7-2 in its only match of the week. II Slippery Rock (PA) University on Tuesday. With the 1-1 week, Malone now stands at 3-7 overall on the season and at 1-0 in the AMC South Division. Men's Golf Finishes 11th At Eastern Kentucky Invitational The Malone College men's golf team finished in 11th place among a 16-team field at the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational last Friday in an event that was shortened to an 18-hole single-day event due to the weather on Saturday. Friday's round was played in extremely windy, cold and rainy conditions.
Malone tallied a score of 311 (+23) for its 11th-place finish as host Eastern Kentucky won the tournament with a score of 291 (+3). Tennessee Tech University finished second at 292, Austin Peay State (TN) University took third at 293, Samford (AL) University was fourth at 296 and The University of Detroit Mercy (MI) rounded out the top five at 300. Scotty Jones (So., East Palestine H.S.) led the way for Malone with a round of 74 (39-35), which tied him for 19th place overall. Aaron Strauch (Jr., Emporium, PA) was next for Malone with a score of 78 (41-37) followed by Keith Cunningham (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) at 79 (41-38). Other Malone scores included Caleb Tevis (So., Athens H.S.) at 80 (40-40) and Jordan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) at 82 (40-42). This week, Malone does not compete and will next compete in the Walsh University Invitational on April 11-12. NOTE: The Westminster (PA) College Invitational scheduled for Monday, March 28th, at which the Malone B team was to have competed, has been cancelled due to the weather. Women's Golf Team Finishes Fourth At Capital Invitational The Malone College women's golf team competed at the Capital University Invitational last weekend and finished fourth among a 10-team field in an event that was shortened to 18 holes on Friday due to Saturday's weather. Malone finished with a score of 382 for its fourth-place finish as St. Mary's (IN) College took the team title at 357. Ohio Northern University placed second at 360, Otterbein College was third at 373 and Walsh University rounded out the top five at 392. Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) paced the squad with a fifth-place finish overall with a round of 87 (44-43) while Carie Kindler (Fr., Sheridan H.S.) posted a round of 96 (43-53). Other Malone scores included Megan Grubb (Fr., Lake H.S.) at 99 (48-51), Heather Hall (Fr., Bellefontaine H.S.) at 100 (48-52), Marissa Brown (Jr., John Glenn H.S.) at 105 (52-53) and Jenna Eason (Fr., Pahrump, Nevada) at 107 (54-53). This week, Malone will compete in the Ohio Cup, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday. |
