Zoo Biology Research Opportunities

Here at Malone College we place a high value in both teaching and research.  Our students are involved with many research projects including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Conservation biology of the Haitian boas, Epicrates striatus fosteri using mtDNA
  • Geographic variation of the Indonesian freckled python, Liasis mackloti, based on molecular, morphological, and behavioral characters.
  • Phylogeography of the eastern milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum) throughout its current known range in the United States.
  • Chemosensory underwater prey foraging in the crocodilians: A comparative study.
  • Ontogenetic shifts in crocodilian foraging.
  • Feeding and habitat ecology of  great horned owl neonates
  • Caudal luring in dumeril’s boas in response to varying levels of satiation
  • Maternal and paternal recognition by confamilial neonates of olive pythons, Liasis olivaceus
  • Masking behavior in female olive pythons, Liasis olivaceus, prior to courtship
  • Behavioral ecology of the eastern massasauga rattlesnake, Sistrurus catenatus, in Trumbull County, Ohio
  • Sensory mechanisms used during foraging in the eastern massasauga rattlesnake, Sistrurus catenatus
  • Effect of full-spectrum lighting on the growth rates of diurnal active snakes
  • Object recognition in the double-yellow headed amazon parrot
  • Maternal and paternal recognition of neonate sugar gliders
  • Characterization of a potential relictual population of six-lined racerunner, Cnemidophorus sexilineatus, in Michigan
  • Courtship of the uromastyx (Uromastyx maliensis)
Many more research opportunities exist (and with a diversity of different species)  through the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.  The Zoo Biology major will generate a research proposal including the experimental design and hypotheses/predictions to be tested.  Once a research proposal has been approved by Malone College and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, the student will then commence on data collection, data analysis, and in the end will present both an oral and written report of findings.  In many cases, the paper is robust enough to be published in a journal and the presentations can be made at scientific symposia.
