The Malone College women's golf team captured the Ohio Cup, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College, last Saturday among an eight-team field in an event that utilized stroke play, match play, best ball and alternating ball formats. Malone captured the title with a total score of 32.0 as Ohio Northern University was second with 25.0 points. Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein College finished tied for third with 24.5 points while Walsh University rounded out the top five with a score of 17.5 points. In the two-person best ball format, Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) and Marissa Brown (Jr., John Glenn H.S.) represented Malone and posted a round of 37, tying Baldwin-Wallace for first place in that format. In the two-person alternating ball, Megan Grubb (Fr.., Lake H.S.) and Heather Hall (Fr., Bellefontaine H.S.) competed for the Pioneers and finished first with a round of 48. Jenna Eason (Fr., Pahrump, Nevada) and Carie Kindler (Fr., Sheridan H.S.) represented Malone in stroke play action and finished in first as Kindler shot a 45 and Eason posted a 48. In match play, in which all six Malone athletes competed, Malone won three matches 2-0 and tied three others 1-1. Grubb, Grovemiller and Kindler each posted the 2-0 victories while Eason, Brown and Hall each tied their matches 1-1. This week, Malone will compete at the Washington & Jefferson (PA) College Invitational on Monday in its only action of the week. Men's, Women's Track & Field Teams Capture Titles At Geneva Meet The Malone College men's and women's track & field teams each captured team titles at the Geneva (PA) College Invitational last Friday. The men, among a six-team field, racked up 218.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Geneva, which had 158 points. NCAA Div. I Robert Morris University took third with 149 points, Grove City (PA) College was fourth (129.5) and NCAA Div. I Duquesne (PA) University rounded out the top five with 13 points. The women, among a four-team field, collected 212 points as Robert Morris finished second with 176 points. Geneva was third with 133 points and Grove City took fourth with 92 points. For the men, Ray Weisenbarger (Jr., Troy Christian H.S.) placed first in the discus with an NAIA automatic qualifying mark of 166' 5". Posting NAIA provisional qualifying marks were Brad Sinick (So., Field H.S.), who won the 3000-meter race walk in 31:01, and Nathan Hughes (So., Worthington Christian H.S.) who placed second, just eight seconds behind Sinick, in 31:09. Weisenbarger also captured a first-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 48' 3.5" while other first-place finishes went to Adam Dunlap (Fr., Indian Valley H.S.) in the pole vault (14' 0"), Ryan Kienzle (Fr., GlenOak H.S.) in the 1500 meters (4:05.66), Chris Cruise (Fr., Field H.S.) in the 400-meter dash (50.82), Mike Coates (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in the 800 meters (2:01.00) and two men's relay teams. The men's 4x800 unit of Coates, Tyler Lunn (Fr., McDonald H.S.), Joe Siebert (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) and Matt Orwick (Fr., East Canton H.S.) finished first in a time of 8:05.65 while the men's 4x400 team of Tim Walter (Jr., West Muskingum H.S.), Cruise, Cody Ford (So., Minerva H.S.) and Adam Huffman (Jr., Crestwood H.S.) also took first in 3:25.98. Second-place finishers for the men included Cruise in the 200-meter dash (23.04) and Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) in the 5000 meters (15:33.94). Third-place finishes went to Brady West (So., West Muskingum H.S.) in the javelin (157' 4.5"), Jason Conklin (Fr., Cuba, NY) in the high jump (6' 4"), Jay Brueckner (Fr., Crestview H.S.) in the 400-meter hurdles (58.40) and Bryan Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) in the 5000 meters (15:49.12). For the women's team, several NAIA automatic and provisional qualifying times were also posted. In the 3000-meter race walk, Ashley Thomas (Jr., Kodiak, AK) took first in an automatic qualifying time of 7:29.9 while Lindsey Hipp (Jr., Amherst H.S.) finished second and also automatically qualified in 7:45.04. Brittani Lyons (So., Elizabeth City, NC) placed third in a provisional qualifying time of 8:50.8. In the 5000 meters, Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) automatically qualified with a first-place time of 18:03.10 while Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora-Gilboa H.S.) placed second and qualified provisionally in a time of 18:11.84. Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) took third in that event in 18:28.02. Other first-place finishers included Ashley Currence (So., East Canton H.S.) in the long jump (17' 4") and triple jump (37' 7") and Brittany Davies (So., Cedarville H.S.) in the 800 meters (2:24.83.
Second-place finishes went to Laura McElrath (Fr., Tallmadge H.S.) in the long jump (17' .5") and 200-meter dash (27.37), Faith Nicholson (So., McMurray, PA) in the high jump (5' 0") and the women's 4x800 unit of Laura Boatwright (Sr., Berkshire H.S.), Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.), Loren Reineke (So., Anna H.S.) and Davies in 9:49.7. Taking third place in an event were Erin Brown (Jr., Revere H.S.) in the pole vault (9' 6"), Aubree Horning (Fr., Salem H.S.) in the shot put (39' 2.25"), Reineke in the 1500 meters (5:07.4), Kristina Barrett (Jr., Licking Valley H.S.) in the 200-meter dash (28.60) and the women's 4x100 team of Sarah Culverhouse (So., East Canton H.S.), Kellyn Murphy (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.), Barrett and Brooke Gasser (So., Norwayne H.S.) in 50.87 seconds. This week, Malone will host the Malone quadrangular (with Walsh University, Mt. Union College and Tiffin University) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The team will also send several athletes to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tennessee April 12-16. Softball Posts 3-7 Mark On The Week The Malone College softball team lost at home to Geneva (PA) College 9-5 and 3-2 last Monday and then fell to the University of Rio Grande 7-0 and 18-1 on Tuesday at home in the first two of five doubleheaders on the week. On Wednesday, the squad split a doubleheader at NCAA Division II Ashland University, winning the first game 3-2 and losing 2-1 in the nightcap. The Pioneers also split twin bills against Notre Dame (OH) College (losing 3-1, winning 8-3) on the road on Friday and against Urbana University (winning 3-2 in nine innings, losing 3-0) at home on Saturday. With the 3-7 week, Malone now stands at 10-11 overall and 1-5 in the AMC South Division. Against Geneva in the opening game, the Pioneers gave up 10 hits and committed six errors in the 9-5 loss. Kristen Houtz (Jr., Hoover H.S.) absorbed the loss (6.1IP, 8H, 8R, 1ER, 2SO). Kathryn Bzdafka (Fr., Avon Lake H.S.) was three-for four (one double) and scored twice to pace the offense. Jeanelle Linder (Sr., Louisville H.S.) was two-for-three (one double), drove in two RBI’s and scored a run followed by Holly Christopher (Fr., Garfield H.S.) with two hits (one double) and two runs scored. In game two against Geneva, Malone allowed three runs in the sixth inning resulting in the 3-2 loss. Heather Jones (Jr., Lexington H.S.) suffered the loss (6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 7SO) while Sarah Sweitzer (Jr., New Philadelphia H.S.) posted a triple, RBI and run scored to pace the offense as three others hit singles. Against Rio Grande at home, the Pioneers allowed seven runs on 13 hits in the 7-0 loss. Jones took the loss despite striking out nine batters. Bzdafka connected for a double while Kari Miller (Sr., East Canton H.S.) hit a single for Malone. In the nightcap against Rio Grande, the Pioneers gave up 18 runs on 21 hits in the 18-1 defeat (five innings). Cori Helm (So., Marion, IN) suffered the loss allowing 16 hits and 13 earned runs. Malone tallied six hits with Joslynn Friedl (Jr., Cranberry Twp., PA) going two-for-two to lead the way. At Ashland, the Pioneers posted three runs on nine hits in the 3-2 victory. Helm pitched a complete game to earn the win (7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 2SO). Sweitzer was three-for-four with three RBI’s and two runs scored followed by Linder with two hits (one double) and an RBI. In addition, Andrea Diyorio (Sr., Austintown H.S.) and Helm also posted doubles. In game two at Ashland, Malone fell 2-1 after giving up a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jones pitched a complete game (7.1IP, 7H, 2R, 1ER, 4SO) and took the loss. Ashlee Locker (Fr., Strasburg H.S.) paced the offense with a double and an RBI. At Notre Dame, Malone allowed three runs on five hits in the 3-1 loss. Houtz absorbed the loss while Diyorio paced the offense with two hits. In game two at Notre Dame, the Pioneers tallied eight runs on 14 hits, including five runs in the top of the eighth to earn the 8-3 victory. Jones earned her fourth win on the season (8IP, 3H, 3R, 1ER, 4BB, 6SO). Linder led the offense with three hits (one double), three RBI’s and two runs scored followed by Christopher with two hits (one double) and two runs scored. In addition, Sweitzer added two doubles. Against Urbana at home, Linder cracked a double that drove in Sweitzer for the winning run (3-2) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bzdafka garnered her first win on the year allowing just two hits and no runs in 5.2 innings. Linder was three-of-four on the day, including two doubles and two RBI’s. Christopher, Helm and Friedl added two hits each. In the nightcap against Urbana, Malone allowed three runs on six hits in the 3-0 shutout. Jones pitched the complete game and absorbed the loss. Offensively, Katie Green (Jr., Oak Harbor H.S.) was two-of-three (both doubles). This week, Malone (10-11, 1-5 AMC S) will travel to Ohio Dominican University on Monday and to Ursuline College on Thursday. Both contests are doubleheaders and begin at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers finish the week with a twin bill at Shawnee State University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Baseball Posts 1-5 Record For The Week
The Malone College baseball team dropped a twin bill (11-4, 3-2) on the road against Notre Dame (OH) College last Tuesday in the first of three doubleheaders on the week. The squad then split its doubleheader at Seton Hill (PA) University on Friday, winning the first game 3-1 and losing the second contest 5-1. The Pioneers then lost two games at home against Seton Hill on Saturday 8-1 and 14-12. With the 1-5 week, Malone falls to 18-17 overall and to 8-8 in the AMC North Division. In game one at Notre Dame, the Pioneers gave up 14 hits and committed three errors in the 11-4 loss. Josh McKeivier (Fr., Strasburg Franklin H.S.) took the loss (2.2IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 1BB, 1SO), his first on the year. Andy Bruno (Jr., Walsh Jesuit H.S.) was two-for-three and posted two RBI’s to pace the offense. Alton Thompson (Jr., Coshocton H.S.) also tallied two hits (one double) and added an RBI. Five other Pioneer players recorded singles as Malone totaled nine hits. In the nightcap at Notre Dame, the Pioneers allowed three runs on five hits while posting just two runs on seven hits. Jay Yorty (Fr., Lisbon David Anderson H.S.) absorbed the loss (6IP, 5H, 3R, 1ER, 2BB, 3SO). Mike Novak (So., Vermilion H.S.) was two-for-three while Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.), Zach Winkhart (Fr., Central Catholic H.S.) and Brian King (Fr., Shelby H.S.) each added a double. At Seton Hill, the Pioneers tallied three runs on six hits in the 3-1 win in game one. Korey Heppeard (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) pitched a complete game (7IP, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 4SO) to earn his third win on the season. Andy Bourquin (Sr., Canton South H.S.), Jason Verner (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL) and Winkhart each recorded a double while Bourquin and Ronnie Lewis (Sr., Rootstown H.S.) added an RBI apiece. In game two at Seton Hill, Malone committed four errors in the 5-1 loss. Anthony Barson (Jr., Timken H.S.) absorbed the loss (5.1 IP, 5H, 5R, 1ER, 7SO) while Winkhart was two-for-two as the Pioneers recorded just four hits. Against Seton Hill in the home opener on Saturday, Malone committed four errors and gave up eight runs on six hits while posting one run on two hits in the 8-1 defeat. Yorty suffered the loss after pitching just 2.2 innings. Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.) and Jarrod Stahl (Jr., Kenmore H.S.) each poked singles. In the nightcap at home against Seton Hill, the Pioneers tallied seven runs in the sixth inning but surrendered five runs in the top of the seventh inning in the 14-12 loss. Scott Heiberg (Fr., Garfield H.S.) was saddled with the loss after pitching just a third of the seventh inning in which the squad allowed four runs. Offensively, Stahl paced the squad with a double, a triple, two RBI’s and a run scored. Troy Richeson (Fr., Minerva H.S.) and Bourquin also tallied two hits each as the Pioneers posted a total of 12 hits. This week, Malone (18-17, 8-8 AMC N) will host a single game against NCAA Division III Marietta College on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in a contest played at Thurman Munson Stadium. The squad then travels to Ohio State University for a single game on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. The Pioneers close the week by hosting Point Park (PA) University on Friday and then playing at Point Park on Saturday. The Malone College men's tennis team picked up two victories in three AMC matches last week, defeating Notre Dame College (OH) by a score of 8-1 on Tuesday (home), stopping St. Vincent (PA) College 8-1 (away) on Friday and losing to Seton Hill (PA) University 7-2 (away) on Saturday.
