Baseball Loses To Marietta, Ohio State; Wins Four Straight Against Point Park The Malone College baseball team lost two non-conference single games early last week but closed out the week by posting four straight AMC North victories on Friday and Saturday. The team began the week with an 8-1 loss (at Thurman Munson Stadium) against NCAA Division III Marietta College last Tuesday and then traveled to NCAA Div. I Ohio State University on Wednesday. The squad fell 15-4 to the Buckeyes, though, after a 4-4 deadlock going into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Pioneers returned home to sweep AMC North foe Point Park (PA) University 11-3 and 3-2 on Friday and earned two more victories in the doubleheader at Point Park on Saturday 7-6 and 7-3. With the 4-2 week, Malone’s record is now 22-19 overall and 12-8 in the AMC North Division.
Against Marietta, the Pioneers allowed 14 hits and committed seven errors in the 8-1 loss. Josh McKeivier (Fr., Strasburg H.S.) absorbed the loss giving up nine hits and six runs in 6.1 innings. Offensively, Troy Richeson (Fr., Minerva H.S.) posted the lone Pioneer RBI while Jarrod Stahl (Jr., Kenmore H.S.) tallied two singles and Mike Novak (So., Vermilion H.S.) added a double. At Ohio State, Malone tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning before giving up nine runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to the 15-4 loss. Jay Yorty (Fr., Lisbon David Anderson H.S.) was saddled with the loss after pitching just 0.2 innings and allowing six runs. The Pioneers tallied eight hits, including two hits each from Andy Bruno (Jr., Walsh Jesuit H.S.) and Jason Verner (Sr., West Palm Beach, FL). Bruno also scored and drove in two runs. Against Point Park in game one on Friday, the Pioneers came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second inning to post an 11-3 victory as Anthony Barson (Jr., Timken H.S.) earned his fourth win on the season (5IP, 5H, 3R, 0ER, 1BB, 3SO). Verner scored and was two-for-three (one double) followed by Andy Bourquin (Sr., Canton South H.S.) with two RBI’s, a single and a double. Scott Taylor (Fr., Lake H.S.) scored, cracked a double and added three RBI’s while Richeson scored, doubled and drove in a run. In Friday’s nightcap against Point Park, Malone was down 2-0 before scoring one run in the third, fifth and sixth innings to pull out the 3-2 win. Dan Walker (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) started the game on the mound for the Pioneers (4IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 5BB, 4SO) but Scott Heiberg (Fr., Garfield H.S.) earned the win allowing no hits and no runs in three innings. Bruno was three-for-three, including a double, to pace the offense. At Point Park on Saturday, Malone scored five runs in the fifth inning to post the 7-6 come-from-behind victory. McKeivier recorded the win while Heiberg got the save. Billy Kern (Sr., Pompano Beach, FL) tallied two hits, two RBI’s and scored to lead the offense. In game two at Point Park, the Pioneers garnered seven runs on 13 hits for the 7-3 victory as Korey Heppeard (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) pitched a complete game (7IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 10SO) to earn his fifth win on the year. Andy Wise (Jr., CVCA) was three-for-four followed by Taylor and Stahl who were each two-for-three. Bourquin and Zach Winkhart (Fr., Central Catholic H.S.) also contributed two hits each. This week, Malone (22-19, 12-8 AMC N) will travel to Myers University on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers then host Tiffin University in a DH on Thursday and will play at Tiffin in another twin bill on Saturday with games starting at 1:00 p.m. on both days. The Malone College men's and women's track & field teams both captured first-place finishes among their respective three-team fields at the Stark County Challenge Meet, hosted by Malone, last Tuesday against Walsh University and Mt. Union College.
The Malone women won with 157 points while Walsh had 117 points and Mount Union finished with 97 points. The Pioneer men won with 143 points while Walsh had 123 points and Mount Union posted 86 points.
For the women, the squad took ten individual first-place finishes and won two relays. Brooke Gasser( So., Norwayne H.S.) won the 100 meters in a time of 12.5 seconds, the 200 meters (26.3) and the javelin (128' 1") and was also a part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay units.
Ashley Currence (So., East Canton H.S.) won the long jump with a leap of 5.22 meters and Erin Brown (Jr., Revere H.S.) won the pole vault (9' 6"). In the distance events, the Malone women had four wins. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Caity Schneider (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) won with a time of 13:18.2. Sarah Decker (Sr., Pandora-Gilboa H.S.) won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:56.3. In the 800-meter run, Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) won in a time of 2:26.6. Lindsey Hipp (Jr., Amherst H.S.) won the 3,000-meter race walk with a time of 16:41.2 and Ashley Thomas (Jr., Anchorage, AK) won the 5000 meters in a time of 19:28. Sarah Culverhouse (So., East Canton H.S.), Kellyn Murphy (Fr., St. Vincent/St. Mary H.S.), Kristina Barrett (Jr., Licking Valley H.S.) and Gasser made up the 4x100 meter relay team that won with a time of 50.2 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team of Laura McElrath (Fr., Tallmadge H.S.), Brittany Davies (So., Cedarville H.S.), Barrett and Gasser also won with a time of 4:09.0. Second-place finishers included McElrath in the long jump at 4.86 meters, Arnold in the 1500-meter run (4:56.6), Sarah Nagle (Jr.. Lakeside H.S.) in the 100-meter hurdles (16.6) and triple jump (33' 3 1/4"). Culverhouse placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09 and Esther Bardo (So., United Local H.S.) took second in the hammer with a throw of 117' 0". Brittani Lyons (So. Elizabeth City, NC) was second in the 3,000-meter race walk with a time of 18:04.1 and Loren Reineke (So., Anna H.S.) placed second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 20:36.2.
Third-place finishers for the women were Sara Parks (Sr., Revere H.S.) in the 5000 meters(20:59.4), Laura Nutt (Jr., New Lexington H.S.) in the discus (118'8") and Megan Gasparin (Jr., Renfrew, PA) in the hammer throw with a throw of 116' 1". In addition, Faith Nicholson (So., McMurray, PA) placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 32' 6 1/2" and in the high jump at 4'10". Aubree Horning (Fr., Salem H.S.) threw 35' 10 1/2" in the shot put to place third and Stephanie Walker (So., Perry H.S.) took third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.8 seconds.
For the men's team, Ray Weisenbarger (Jr., Troy Christian H.S.) had three individual titles. He won the shot put (49'7"), the discus (154'3 1/4") and the hammer with a throw of 144' 11". Luke McCluggage (Fr., Jackson-Milton H.S.) won the 1500-meter run (4:07.6) and Danny Kendrick (Sr., Ravenna H.S.) won the 110-meter hurdles (15.4). In the 400 meter dash, Chris Cruise (Fr., Field H.S.) won with a time of 50.0 seconds. In addition, Nate Hughes (So., Worthington Christian H.S.) won the 5,000-meter race walk (31:00) and Justin Baum (Fr., Kenston H.S.) won the 5000-meter run in a time of 15:38.
Second-place finishes for the men included Brad Sinick (So., Field H.S.) in the 5,000 meter race walk (31:00.3), Curtis Mortenson (Jr., Kodiak, AK) in the 5000 meters (15:49), Jason Conklin (Fr., Cuba, NY) in the high jump (6' 2"), Adam Dunlap (Fr., Indian Valley H.S.) in the pole vault (14' 0") and Brady West (So., West Muskingum H.S.) in the javelin with a throw of 167'0. In addition, Mike Coates (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) ran 4:08.4 in the 1500 meters to place second and Matt Orwick (Fr., East Canton H.S.) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:33.2.
Third-place finishers included Travis Shuff (Fr., Fredericktown H.S.) in the high jump (6' 2"), Brian Straniero (Jr., Berkshire H.S.) in the 1500-meter run (4:12.6), Chad Szalay (Fr., Clearview H.S.) in the 100 meters (11.2) and McCluggage in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.4. In addition, Jason Brueckner (Fr., Crestview H.S.) finished third in the 400-meter hurdles (58.2) and Justin Gilbert (Jr., Perry H.S.) threw 131' 0" in the hammer to place third.
Malone also sent several men's and women's athletes to the prestigious Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee last Thursday through Saturday.
For the men, Leo Kormanik (Jr., Akron Ellet H.S.) and Dave Gramlich (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) each posted NAIA national automatic qualifying times in the 10,000 meters with times of 30:47.91 (3rd) and 30:55.12 (4th), respectively. In addition, Weisenbarger also automatically qualified in the discus with a toss of 171' 11" for a sixth-place finish. For the women, Lacey Watkins (So., Lockport, NY) automatically qualified in the 10,000 meters in a time of 38:06.17 (7th) while Joanna Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) and Amy Arnold (Jr., CVCA) posted personal best times in the 3,000 meters in respective times of 10:19.46 and 10:30.78. This week, the Malone teams will compete in the American Mideast Conference Championships, hosted by Cedarville University, on Friday and Saturday. Men Golf Team Wins Walsh Invitational; Pioneer B Team Places Second At MVNU Invitational The Malone College men's golf team (A team) won the Walsh University Invitational last Monday and Tuesday at the Prestwick and Raintree Country Clubs while the Malone B team finished third out of nine teams at the event. Malone A tallied a two-day score of 631 (308-323) while Tiffin came in second at 635 (316-319). Malone B tied for third at 640 (298-342) with Walsh, which also had a 640 (314-326), while Ohio Dominican University rounded out the top five at 656 (319-337).
Scotty Jones (So., East Palestine H.S.) was the top finisher for the Pioneer A team and finished second overall with a score of 155 (75-80) while Jordan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) finished fourth with a score of 157(75-82). Matt Wabby (Sr., Baldwin H.S.) shot 159 (79-80) to finish eighth. Aaron Strauch (Jr., Cameron County H.S.) finished with a 163 (82-81) and tied with Keith Cunningham (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) who also shot a 163 (79-84) for 20th place.
The Pioneer B team was paced by Jeff Butler (Sr., Centerburg H.S.) who finished tied for eighth after shooting a 159 (74-85) along with Nathan Garwood (So., Ridgedale H.S.) who also shot a 159 (73-86). Darren Phipps (Fr., Lake H.S.) finished just one stroke behind with a score of 160 (76-84) for a 12th-place finish. Matt Strayer (Fr., Riverside H.S.) finished tied for 20th with a score of 163 (75-88) while Scott Shenker (Jr., Twinsburg H.S.) rounded out the Pioneer lineup, finishing 24th with a score of 164 (77-87). At the Mt. Vernon Nazarene University Invitational on Friday and Saturday, the Malone B team finished second among a 10-team field with a two-day score of 610 (303-307). Tiffin University won the event with a score of 605 (303-302). Ohio Dominican took third at 613 (308-305), Walsh was fourth at 618 (308-310) and Shawnee State University rounded out the top five at 626 (309-317). Shenker led the charge with a score of 149 (73-76), which was good enough for a third-place finish overall. Garwood carded a 151 (75-76), Garret Barbush (So., Manheim, PA) tallied a 154 (77-77), Butler posted a 156 (78-78) and Wabby finished with a 157 (78-79). This week, Malone will compete at the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (10:00 a.m.) and will close out the week by hosting the Malone-Tannenhauf Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance (10:00 a.m.). The Malone College women's golf team captured the team title at the Cameron Cup hosted by Washington & Jefferson (PA) University last Monday among a six-team field. Malone finished with a final score of 357 while Muskingum College placed second with a score of 387. Host Washington & Jefferson came in third at 421, Westminster (PA) College was fourth at 425, Thiel (PA) College finished fifth at 496 and Grove City (PA) College rounded out the competition with a sixth-place finish and a score of 502.
Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) won the individual title with a round of 83 (42-41). Carie Kindler (Fr., Sheridan H.S.) took third place with a round of 88 (45-43), Jenna Eason (Fr., Pahrump, Nevada) was fifth with a round of 92 (44-48) and Megan Grubb (Fr. Lake H.S.) sixth with a round of 94 (47-47) as Malone placed four players in the top six. Heather Hall (Fr., Bellefontaine H.S.) finished 10th with a score of 97 (46-51), Marissa Brown (Jr., John Glenn H.S.) was 15th with a score of 105 (52-53) and Carinna Baldner (Fr., Hillsdale H.S.) came in 25th with a round of 134 (65-69).
This week, Malone will compete in the Westminster (PA) Invitational on Monday in its only match of the week.
Softball Loses Twin Bills Against Ohio Dominican, Shawnee State; Splits With Ursuline The Malone College softball team picked up one victory in six contests last week as the team opened with two losses to Ohio Dominican University by scores of 7-2 in both games last Monday (at ODU). On the road last Thursday, the squad beat Ursuline College 1-0 in the opener but lost 3-1 in the nightcap. The Pioneers then lost to Shawnee State University 8-5 and 8-3 (away) on Saturday. With the 1-5 week, Malone slipped to 11-16 overall and to 1-9 in the AMC South Division. In game one at ODU, the Pioneers allowed seven runs on seven hits while tallying just two runs on four hits in the 7-2 loss. Kristen Houtz (Jr., Hoover H.S.) suffered the loss after giving up five hits and five runs in 2.1 innings. Kathryn Bzdafka (Fr., Avon Lake H.S.) paced the offense with a home run, two RBI’s and a run scored followed by Andrea Diyorio (Sr., Austintown Fitch H.S.) with a double. In the nightcap at ODU, Malone posted just two runs on eight hits while giving up seven runs on 10 hits in the 7-2 defeat. Cori Helm (So., Marion, IN) absorbed the loss (3IP, 7H, 5R, 4ER). Helm was also two-for-three (both doubles) to pace the offense. In addition, Sarah Sweitzer (Jr., New Philadelphia H.S.) added two singles and an RBI. At Ursuline in game one, Heather Jones (Jr., Lexington H.S.) cracked a single that scored Diyorio in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 1-0 win. Jones also pitched the complete game (7IP, 5H, 2BB, 9SO) to pocket the victory. In the second game at Ursuline, Malone gave up two runs in the second and one run in the sixth in the 3-1 loss. Helm suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Sweitzer and Helm each poked a single as the Pioneers recorded just two hits. In the opener at Shawnee State, Malone lost 8-5 despite tallying 14 hits as Jones took the loss (4IP, 6H, 6R, 5ER, 5BB, 4SO). In the nightcap at Shawnee State, the Pioneers committed three errors and allowed eight runs on nine hits in the 8-3 loss. Bzdafka absorbed the loss after relieving Houtz in the fifth inning while Sweitzer and Bzdafka each tabbed doubles to pace the offense. This week, Malone (11-16, 1-9 AMC S) will face local rival Walsh University in a DH at Walsh on Monday at 3:00 p.m. and then travel to Seton Hill (PA) University on Tuesday for a twin bill beginning at 3:00 p.m. The squad will close out the week with a doubleheader at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a make-up doubleheader. NOTE: Malone will not host the NCCAA Regionals on April 22-23 as originally scheduled (not enough teams entered). The Malone College men's tennis team lost a pair of matches last Saturday at Cedarville University as the team lost to host Cedarville 7-2 in the morning and then dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Asbury (KY) College in the early afternoon in a match played at Cedarville. With the 0-2 week, Malone now stands at 6-10 overall and at 3-2 in the AMC. Brian Paul (Sr., Louisville H.S.) and Adam Carrick (Sr., West Holmes H.S.) each gutted out both of their singles victories on the week as Paul won 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 in a grueling match against Cedarville and 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a come-from-behind win against Asbury while Carrick won 6-2, 6-4 in his Cedarville match and 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 in his come-from-behind win against Asbury.
