Women’s Soccer Beats Geneva 1-0, Defeats Daemen 4-1

     The Malone College women’s soccer team earned a road win last Tuesday with a 1-0 blanking of Geneva (PA) College and then beat Daemen (NY) College (away)  4-1 last Saturday in its final game of the week.  With the 2-0 week, Malone is now 5-3-1 on the year.
     At Geneva, neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.  As a matter of fact, it took until the 86th minute of play when Malone's Julia Wade (So., Clearfork H.S.) scored off a cross from Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) to secure the 1-0 Malone victory.  The Pioneers tallied 14 shots on goal while keeper Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) posted five saves.  Geneva took five shots and made 11 saves.
     At Daemen, Herbst gave Malone the early lead with a goal off a cross from Lauren Achtien (Fr., Fischers, IN) at the 22:45 mark.  Daemen then tied the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute.  In the second half, Herbst scored two more goals with assists from Aleesha Denmeade (Fr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) and Megan Gasparin (Sr., Renfrew, PA).  Ashley Dennerlein (Fr., Baden, PA) capped off the scoring with a goal off a cross from Katie Elson (Jr., Bournemouth, England) to give the Pioneers the 4-1 victory. Malone garnered 19 shots on goal while Brown recorded three saves and backup keeper Ashley White (Fr., Wheeling, WV) added two saves. Daemen took seven shots and made 15 saves.
     This week, Malone (5-3-1) will open conference play at Tiffin University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in its only match of the week.

Men’s Soccer Defeats Geneva 1-0, Falls To Daemen 2-1

     The Malone College men’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season last Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Geneva (PA) College (away) but lost to Daemen (NY) College 2-1 last Saturday (away) in its other match of the week.  With the 1-1 week, Malone is now 1-5-1 on the season.
     At Geneva, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 throughout the first half.  Then, in the 86th minute, Zach Rausch (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) scored off a pass from Graeme Clement (Fr., Edinburgh, England) for the 1-0 win.  The Pioneers posted 11 shots while goalie Michael Porter (So., Highland H.S.) collected three saves.  Geneva took just four shots and made two saves.
     At Daemen, Malone trailed the Warriors 2-0 at the half until Rausch found the back of the goal in the 67th minute but the Pioneers could not even the score in the 2-1 loss.  Malone tallied 13 shots and Porter posted six saves. Daemen took eight shots and made nine saves.
     This week, Malone (1-5-1) will play three road games this week beginning with NCAA Division III Waynesburg (PA) College on Monday at 4:00 p.m.  The squad will then face Rochester (MI) College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and will finish the week with its first conference match of the season at Tiffin University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Volleyball Beats Tiffin 3-1; Splits Matches At St. Ambrose Invitational
 
     In its first conference match of the season, the Malone College volleyball team earned the victory (at home) last Tuesday with a 3-1 win (30-25, 30-24, 22-30, 30-26) over Tiffin University.  The squad then traveled to Iowa last weekend to compete in the St. Ambrose (IA) University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The Pioneers lost to Peru State (NE) College 26-30, 26-30, 30-22, 30-32 and beat NCAA Div. III Grinnell (IA) College 30-22, 30-24, 30-28 on Friday.  Then, on Saturday, Malone fell to Cornerstone (MI) University 13-30, 14-30, 17-30 but rebounded to defeat NCAA Div. III Knox (IL) College 28-30, 30-16, 30-19, 30-11.  Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) was selected to the All Tournament Team for the Pioneers.  With the 2-3 week, Malone is currently 7-10 overall and 1-0 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Tiffin, Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) slammed down 18 kills followed by Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) and O’Hara with 16 and 14 kills, respectively.  O’Hara also scooped up a team-high 25 digs while Chafins added 16 digs, three aces and three blocks.  Juli Harding (Jr., Garaway H.S.) also collected three blocks while Katie Wright (So., Dover H.S.) tallied 62 assists.
     Against Peru State, Chafins tallied 21 kills followed by O’Hara with 16 kills.  Defensively, Chafins paced the way with 19 digs while Yocum added 18 digs.  Wright amassed 66 assists while Yocum and Talin Celuch (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) each posted three aces.
     In the Grinnell match, Yocum and O’Hara paced the attack with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.  Chafins led the defense with 23 digs while Amanda Robinson (So., Claymont H.S.) collected four services aces and Wright added 24 assists.
     Against Cornerstone, O’Hara and Chafins each posted nine kills while O’Hara recorded a team-high 18 digs.  In addition, Wright garnered 30 assists.
     In the final match of the weekend against Knox, Yocum slammed 22 kills and served six aces to lead the offense.  Chafins and O’Hara each posted 21 digs and Wright added 42 assists.
     This week, Malone (7-10, 1-0 AMC S) will host Ohio Dominican University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in its only contest of the week.
 
Football Loses To St. Xavier 37-14
 
     The Malone College football team fell to NAIA 14th-ranked St. Xavier (IL) University at home last Saturday 37-14.  The Pioneers gained 116 yards in both passing and rushing for a total of 232 yards while the Cougars posted 223 yards rushing and 214 yards passing for a total of 437 yards on the day.  With the loss, Malone is now 0-2 on the season.
     Through most of the first quarter, it remained a scoreless ballgame.  Then, with 1:11 left in the quarter, St. Xavier scored on a 15-yard rush (PAT good) to take the 7-0 lead.
     The Cougars then ran off 27 points in the second quarter, including a 17-yard TD pass (PAT good), TD rushes of 2 yards and 41 yards (both PATs good), and a 70-yard punt return (PAT blocked by senior DL Brian Landies from Chardon High School) to take a commanding 34-0 lead.  With just 32 seconds remaining in the first half, though, wide receiver A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland heights H.S.) returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown to put Malone on the board.  The extra point attempt by Nate Bryant (Fr., Caldwell, WV) failed ending the half with the Pioneers trailing 34-6.
     In the third stanza, Malone drove 68 yards in three plays and capped off the drive with a one-yard TD run by Jevontae Freeman (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.).  The squad then successfully completed the two-point conversion on a run by Owen making the score 34-14.  After being held scoreless in the third quarter, the Cougars added a 29-yard field goal to secure the 37-14 win.
     Quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., Timken H.S.) completed 15 of 29 passes and threw one interception for a total of 116 yards.  Owen snagged three catches for 40 yards followed by Justin Clark (Sr., Northwest H.S.) also with three catches for 24 yards.  Freeman led the ground attack with 89 yards on 15 carries. 
     Punter Tyler Parry (Fr., Loxahatchee, FL) posted eight punts and averaged 39.1 yards per punt.  Owen, in addition to his 79-yard kickoff return for a TD, also returned two other kicks for a total of 45 more yards.  Michael Wright (So., N. Canton Hoover H.S.) also returned two kickoffs for a total of 49 yards.
     Defensively, DB Chris Cruise (So., Field H.S.) paced the squad with nine tackles (seven solo, 1TFL) while DB Jason Frantz (Jr., Perry H.S.) also posted nine tackles (four solo) and a pass breakup.  Justin Murphy LB (So., Minerva H.S.) and LB Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) followed with seven tackles each while DL Brian Landies (Sr., Chardon H.S.) and LB Kevin Kapostasy (So., Fairport H.S.) had six each.  Cornerback Doug Alford (Fr., St. Peter Chanel H.S.) added four tackles and two pass breakups while LB Dan Hromada (So., Padua Franciscan H.S.) posted four tackles, three TFL's and a sack.  Josh Lasure DL (Fr., West Muskingum H.S.) also posted four tackles on the day.
     This week, Malone (0-2) will travel to the University of St. Francis (IL) (2-1) on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. CST kickoff.
 
Women's Golf Team Places Third At Urbana Invitational
 
     The Malone College women's golf team opened its fall season, in which the team will compete in the NAIA national tournament qualifying event in mid October, by placing third at the Urbana University Invitational last Friday.  Malone finished with a score of 407 as Tiffin University took the team title at 350.  Walsh University placed second at 360, Ohio Dominican University took fourth at 422 and Urbana finished fifth at 433.
     Megan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) paced the Pioneer team with a round of 90 to finish eighth overall while Heather Grovemiller (Jr., Perry H.S.) finished second for Malone at 95.  Heather Hall (So., Bellefontaine H.S.) was next for the team at 102 while Marissa Brown (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) and Jenny Green (So., Oak Harbor H.S.) followed with scores of 120.
     This week, the team will not compete but will next tee off at the Ohio Dominican University Invitational on September 30-October 1.
    
Men's Golf Team Wins Red Poling Invitational; Places Second In Own Fall Invitational
 
     The Malone College men's golf team competed in two events last week and captured a first-place finish (among six teams) at the Red Poling Collegiate Classic (hosted by Spring Arbor University) last Thursday and then placed a close second (among 12 teams) in its own Malone Fall Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Course last Friday and Saturday.  In addition, the Pioneer B team finished fourth at the Malone event.
     At the Red Poling event, Malone, which tallied a score of 301, edged Hope College (at 302) by just one stroke to take the event title.  Spring Arbor finished third (309), Augustana College was fourth (318), Monmouth College took fifth (338) and Calvin College placed sixth (349).
     Scotty Jones (Jr., East Palestine H.S.) posted his second straight medalist honors in as many attempts this season as he won the individual title with a round of 72.  Aaron Strauch (Sr., Emporium, PA) tied for second overall with a 73 while Darren Phipps (So., Lake H.S.) was next for the Pioneers at 77.  Jordan Grubb (Jr., Lake H.S.) finished tied for 10th at 79 and Michael Johnson (Fr., Lake H.S.) tallied an 81 on the day to finish in 14th place.
     At its own Invitational, the Malone A team finished with a two-day total of 589 (295-294) but was edged by the Walsh University A squad, which tallied a 587 (290-297), by just two strokes.  The University of Mobile (AL) finished third at 590 (299-291), the Malone B team placed fourth at 593 (295-298) and Mt. Union College rounded out the top five at 596 (300-296).
     Scotty Jones, with a total of 141 (71-70), tied for medalist honors at the Malone event but lost on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to Tiffin's Adam DeArmond.  Joining Jones on the five-man All-Tournament Team was Malone B leader Grant Gates (Jr., River Valley H.S.) who placed third overall at 142 (73-69).
     Following Jones on the A unit was Grubb at 150 (77-73), Strauch at 151 (76-75), Johnson at 152 (71-81) and Phipps at 155 (79-76).
     For the B squad, Gates paced the team and was then followed by Scott Shenker (Sr., Twinsburg H.S.) at 148 (71-77), Garret Barbush (Jr., Manheim, PA) at 153 (79-74), Nate Garwood (Jr., Ridgedale H.S.) at 153 (75-78) and Matt Strayer (So., Riverside H.S.) at 154 (76-78).
     This week, Malone will not compete but will next square off at the Ohio Dominican University Invitational on September 30-October 1.
