The Malone College football team earned its first victory of the season last Saturday with a 34-27 win at the University of St. Francis (IL). The Pioneers tallied 225 yards passing and 183 yards rushing for a total of 408 yards while USF posted 122 yards passing and 150 yards rushing for 272 total yards. With the victory, Malone is now 1-2 on the year. At USF, the Pioneers opened the game by driving 79 yards on 16 plays and scoring a touchdown on a two-yard pass from quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., North Canton H.S.) to wide receiver Lou Ward (Fr., East Liverpool H.S.). The two-point conversion failed giving Malone a 6-0 lead. A few minutes later, USF intercepted a pass and subsequently scored on a six-yard pass (PAT good) to take a 7-6 lead. On their next possession, the Pioneers drove 70 yards in six plays ending with a 36-yard pass from Reifsnyder into the end zone to Mike Clapham (So., Elyria Catholic H.S.). Again, the two-point conversion failed leaving the score 12-7. In the first minute of the second quarter, USF kicked a 42-yard field goal to cut the lead to 12-10. However, Malone stormed right back with a 59-yard TD pass from Reifsnyder to A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.). Reifsnyder then hit fullback Trent Dibell (So., Fairless H.S.) with a two-point conversion pass extending the Pioneer lead to 20-10. With just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half, USF scored on a 20-yard TD pass (PAT good) and ended the half trailing Malone 20-17. The Pioneers scored the lone touchdown of the third stanza on a one-yard rush by running back Josh Luyster (So., Union Local H.S.). Shawn O’Halloran (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) added the extra point making the score 27-17. In the final period, DL Sean McMurray (Jr., Twin Valley South H.S.) recovered a USF fumble and returned it to the Mustang five-yard line. Reifsnyder connected with Owen for the TD and O’Halloran added the extra point giving the Pioneers a 34-17 advantage. With 8:34 remaining, USF scored on a 13-yard pass (PAT good) cutting the lead to 34-24. The Fighting Saints also added a 46-yard field goal but could get no closer as the Pioneers won 34-27. Reifsnyder completed 15 of 27 passes for 195 yards, including four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 50 yards on 15 carries. Luyster also paced the ground game with 50 yards on 13 carries, including a touchdown, followed by RB Justin Romantic (Fr., Midview H.S.) with 48 yards on 12 carries. For the receiving corps, Owen snagged five passes for 102 yards, including two touchdowns, and was named MSFA Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. He also returned three kickoffs for 66 yards. In addition, Clapham added four catches for 80 yards and one TD. On the defensive side, Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) paced the squad with eight tackles (three solo, two TFL). Linebacker Kevin Andrysek (Sr., Brunswick H.S.) collected five tackles, including three solo tackles, three TFL, two sacks and forced a fumble followed by DB Jason Frantz (Jr., Perry H.S.) who also had five tackles (three solo). McMurray added four tackles (two TFL) and recovered a fumble while LB Justin Murphy (So., Minerva H.S.) also posted four tackles. Jeff Jefferies DL (So., Meadowdale H.S.) added three tackles (two solo, 1 TFL) and a pass deflection while DL Brian Landies (Sr., Chardon H.S.) recorded three tackles, including two tackles for a loss and a sack. Chris Cruise DB (So., Field H.S.) snatched an interception and tallied four pass deflections while DL Josh Lasure (Fr., West Muskingum H.S.) collected a fumble recovery. This week, Malone (1-2, 0-0 MSFA Mideast) will host local rival Walsh University (3-1, 1-0 MSFA Mideast) at 1:00 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium. The Malone College men’s soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over NCAA Div. III Waynesburg (PA) College last Monday at Waynesburg in the first of three matches on the week. On Wednesday, the squad fell to Rochester (MI) College 3-2 and then, on Saturday, lost 2-0 at Tiffin University in the first conference match of the season. With the 1-2 week, Malone is now 2-7-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the AMC South. At Waynesburg, the Pioneers found themselves trailing 1-0 less than five minutes into the match. However, the squad quickly regrouped and tied the game at 1-1 in the 10th minute as J.J. Hendry (Fr., Greenock, Scotland) found the back of the goal off a corner kick from Greg Carroll (So., Dunfermline, Scotland). In the second half, Alex Ferrandez (Jr., Elche, Spain) scored the game-winning goal off a through ball from Carroll. Malone tallied 11 shots on goal in the 2-1 win while goalie Michael Porter (So., Highland H.S.) collected four saves. Waynesburg took five shots and made five saves. At Rochester, the Pioneers trailed the hosts 2-0 at the half and surrendered another goal in the 53rd minute of play. Will McGibbon (Fr., Newton Mearnes, Scotland) pocketed two goals in the second stanza for Malone to cut the lead to 3-2 which was the final score. Bryan Lopes (Fr., Coffman H.S.) and Graeme Clement (Fr., Edinburgh, Scotland) each posted an assist. The Pioneers tallied 11 shots while Porter made two saves in the first half and keeper Kyle Beun (Jr., Central Christian H.S.) collected four saves in the second half. Rochester took nine shots and made six saves. At Tiffin, Malone gave up two goals, one in each half, while being held scoreless in the 2-0 defeat. The Pioneers posted eight shots and Porter tallied 13 saves while Tiffin took 15 shots and made five saves. This week, Malone (2-7-1, 0-1-0 AMC S) will host Point Park (PA) College (4-3-0, 0-2-0 AMC N) on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and conference foe Cedarville University (6-1-1, 1-0-0 AMC S) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Malone College women’s soccer team, playing in its only match of the week, lost a 2-0 decision at Tiffin University last Saturday in the Pioneers' first conference match of the season. With the loss, the Pioneers are now 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the AMC South. At Tiffin, both teams were held scoreless throughout the first half. Tiffin then broke the tie with a goal in the 61st minute and added another goal in the 81st minute for the 2-0 win. Malone attempted 12 shots on goal while Tiffin had 10. Pioneer goalie Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) had eight saves while the Dragon keeper had 12. This week, Malone (5-4-1, 0-1-0 AMC S) will host Cedarville University (4-5-0, 1-0-0 AMC S) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in its only match of the week. The Malone College volleyball team fell to AMC South Division rival Ohio Dominican University 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 28-30, 26-30) last Thursday at home in its only match of the week. With the loss, Malone is now 7-11 overall and 1-1 in the AMC South. Against ODU, Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) paced the offense with 16 kills while Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) added 14 kills and a team-best 30 digs. In addition, Katie Wright (So., Dover H.S.) collected 50 assists and Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) tallied six blocks. This week, Malone (7-11, 1-1 AMC S) will travel to the University of Rio Grande (3-13, 0-2 AMC S) on Tuesday and to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (23-5, 1-1 AMC S) on Thursday. Both contests begin at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers will then close out the week by hosting a tri-match on Saturday in which Malone will face Shawnee State University (9-5, 0-2 AMC S) at 11:00 a.m. and Urbana University (20-2, 3-0 AMC S) at 3:00 p.m. Shawnee State and Urbana will face each other in a 1:00 p.m. contest. |
