Women's Golf - Malone placed fourth among six teams at the Ohio Dominican University Invitational last Friday and Saturday Note: For statistics and standings of Malone teams, check out www.amcsports.org and/or www.mid-statesfootball.org. The Malone College women’s soccer team beat Cedarville University 3-0 at home last Saturday in its lone match on the week. With the victory, the Pioneers are now 6-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the AMC South.
Against Cedarville, Aleesha Denmeade (Fr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) pocketed back-to-back goals in the first half. Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) also scored in the first stanza en route to the Pioneers' 3-0 victory. Lauren Achtien (Fr., Fischers, IN) assisted on the first goal while Abbie Zippert (Sr., Cleveland Heights H.S.) assisted on Herbst’s goal. Malone posted 16 shots on goal in the contest and keeper Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) secured five saves. Cedarville tallied five shots and made 13 saves. This week, Malone (6-4-1, 1-1-0 AMC S) will travel to Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College on Monday for a 6:00 p.m. match. The squad will then host Walsh University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. (NOTE: this time has been changed from 7:00 p.m. - now 4:00 p.m.) and will close out the week by hosting Urbana University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Malone College men’s soccer team soundly defeated Point Park (PA) University 10-0 at home last Wednesday but lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in overtime at home to Cedarville University on Saturday. With the 1-1 week, Malone is now 3-8-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the AMC South. Against Point Park, the Pioneers held a 3-0 advantage at the half with Barry McConnochie (Fr., Glasgow, Scotland) scoring twice, including the game-winning first goal in the eighth minute of play. Graeme Clement (Fr., Edinburgh, Scotland) assisted on both goals. Greg Carroll (So., Dunfermline, Scotland) pocketed the other first half goal. In the second half, Kevin Fischer (Sr., Jackson H.S.) tallied a hat trick with goals in the 59th minute, 70th minute and 83rd minute of play. Fischer also assisted on a goal by Carroll in the 60th minute. J.J. Hendry (Fr., Greenock, Scotland) and Will McGibbon Fr., Newton Mearns, Scotland) also posted second stanza goals with Paul Orr (Sr., Open Door Christian H.S.) assisting. Malone tallied 21 shots on goal in the 10-0 victory while starting goal keeper Michael Porter (So., Highland H.S.) recorded three saves in the first half and backup keeper Kyle Beun (Jr., Central Christian H.S.) made three saves in the last half of the contest. Point Park took six shots and made eight saves. Against Cedarville, the teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the half and remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of regulation. Then in the ninth minute of OT, Cedarville scored on a penalty kick to secure the 1-0 win. Malone recorded six shots on goal while Porter posted five saves. Cedarville took 10 shots and made one save. This week, Malone (3-8-1, 1-1-0 AMC S) will travel to Walsh University on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. match and then will host Urbana University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Malone College volleyball team began the week with a 3-1 victory (23-30, 30-21, 30-17, 30-28) at the University of Rio Grande last Tuesday but fell to Mount Vernon Nazarene University 15-30, 22-30, 30-24, 16-30 on Thursday at MVNU. The squad closed out the week by hosting a tri-match with Shawnee State University and Urbana University on Saturday. The Pioneers defeated Shawnee State 30-26, 30-28, 30-18 but lost to Urbana 22-30, 39-41, 21-30. With the 2-2 week, Malone is currently 9-13 overall and 3-3 in the AMC South. At Rio, Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) slammed down 20 kills to pace the offense followed by Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) with 15 kills. Defensively, Chafins again led the way with 21 digs followed by Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) with 18 digs. Yocum added a team-high four blocks. In addition, Katie Wright (So., Dover H.S.) amassed 51 assists while Talin Celuch (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) served four aces. At MVNU, O’Hara posted 22 kills while Wright collected 46 assists. Chafins scooped up 16 digs and Yocum added three blocks. Against Shawnee State, Yocum paced the squad with 15 kills and five blocks followed by O’Hara with 13 kills and six service aces. In addition, Chafins tallied 12 digs and Wright recorded 37 assists. Against Urbana, Chafins garnered a team-best 11 kills and 18 digs while Wright posted 31 assists. This week, Malone (9-13, 3-3 AMC S) will host Walsh University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and will close out the week by traveling to Tiffin University on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Men's Cross Country Places 10th at Loyola Invitational; Women Take 19th; Malone Men's And Women's B Teams Combine To Win Walsh Coed Meet The Malone College men's and women's cross country teams, both ranked third in the latest NAIA national poll, competed at the NCAA Div. I Loyola (IL) University in Chicago last Saturday as the men's team finished with a solid 10th-place finish among 28 teams while the women's squad took 19th among its 28-team field. In the men's event, Loyola took the team title with 81 points, Eastern Michigan University was second with 98, University of Guelph (Ontario) took third at 118, Grand Valley State (MI) University placed fourth at 125 and the University of Illinois rounded out the top five at 181. Malone tallied 325 points for its 10th-place finish and defeated the likes of NCAA Div. I foes Marquette University, Xavier University, Missouri State University and the University of Central Florida. In the women's race, Malone recorded 530 points to finish 19th as Marquette won the women's title with 54 points. Grand Valley State was second with 73 points, Missouri State took third at 170, Ball State University placed fourth at 195 and Guelph rounded out the top five with 216 points. Central Florida, DePaul and Marshall were among the NCAA Div. I teams that Malone defeated. For the men, Nik Schweikert (Fr., Beavercreek H.S.) led the way with a 47th-place finish overall in a time of 25:49 as the top six Malone finishers were within 31 seconds of each other. Ryan Kienzle (So., GlenOak H.S.) was next for Malone in 50th place in 25:50 while Bryan Straniero (Sr., Berkshire H.S.) was 65th in 26:02. Others who scored for the team were Luke McCluggage (So., Jackson-Milton H.S.) in 80th (26:11) and Justin Baum (So., Kenston H.S.) in 83rd (26:17). Others who competed for the Pioneer men included Curtis Mortenson (Sr., Kodiak, AK) who was 87th (26:20) and Ryan Crocker (Fr., CVCA), who was among several runners who fell in a pileup at the beginning of the race but who still managed to finish (163rd in 28:17). For the women, Joanna Genter (Jr., Crestview H.S.) paced the team with a 23rd-place finish overall in 18:23. Caity Schneider (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.) was next for the squad in 82nd at 19:19. Others who scored for the team included Carrie Hart (Jr., LaBrae H.S.) in 104th (19:34), Katie Bagley (Fr., Van Wert H.S.) in 160th (20:27) and Lauren Sloan (Jr., Kent Roosevelt H.S.) in 161st (20:28). In addition to competing at the Loyola meet, the Malone teams sent athletes to compete at the Walsh University Coed Meet last Saturday. The Malone men and women teamed to win the overall combined event with a score of 58 as Walsh was second at 77 and Notre Dame (OH) College took third at 167. In the women's race, Malone took first with 26 points as Walsh was the runner-up with 51 points. Ashley Thomas (Sr., Anchorage, AK) won the individual title in 19:45 while Loren Reineke (Jr., Anna H.S.) was second in 20:08. Other Pioneer women in the top ten were Sarah Parks (Sr., Revere H.S.) in fourth (20:34), Rachel Heflen (Jr., Orrville H.S.) in ninth (21:30) and Katie Hughes (Jr., Woodridge H.S.) in 10th (21:35). In the men's event, Malone finished second with 32 points as Walsh won with 26 points. Mike Coates (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) won the individual title in a time of 16:03 while Brandon Myers (Fr., Marlington H.S.) was next for Malone in fourth (16:32). Others in the top ten for Malone were Ryan Hurley (Sr., Coldwater, MI) in fifth (16:38) and Matt Orwick (So., East Canton H.S.) in 10th (16:51). This week, the teams will compete at the Ohio Intercollegiate meet in Delaware, Ohio on Friday. The women's race is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the men's race set for 2:45 p.m. Football Team Loses To Walsh University 34-16 The Malone College football team fell to Walsh University by the score of 34-16 last Saturday in a home game for the Pioneers and one in which the winner receives the annual rotating Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late former Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In addition, in a pregame recognition, Malone wide receiver John Regas (Sr., Lake H.S.) and Walsh punter C.J. Novince were awarded the annual $500 Dick Gallagher Memorial Scholarships. Malone tallied 335 total yards in the contest, including 184 yards rushing and 151 yards passing, while Walsh posted 324 yards, including 227 yards rushing and 97 yards passing. With the loss, Malone is now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MSFA Mideast. After intercepting a pass at its own two-yard line after a long Malone drive, the Cavaliers scored on a one-yard rush 14 plays later (PAT good) to take a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. The second period was mostly a defensive battle until Walsh returned a punt 63 yards for another touchdown (PAT good) to go up 14-0. The Pioneers cut into the lead with a 34-yard field goal by Shawn O’Halloran (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) to end the half 14-3 in favor of Walsh. In the third quarter, the Cavaliers capped off a 67-yard drive with a two-yard TD rush (PAT good) to extend their lead to 21-3. Malone responded with its own touchdown on a 13-yard rush by Jevontae Freeman (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.). O’Halloran added the extra point making the score 21-10 with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter. However, Walsh scored again (20-yard TD rush) with just over a minute left in the third period and added the extra point for a 28-10 advantage. The Cavaliers added another TD (a 10-yard pass) in the fourth quarter but missed the extra point to go up 34-10. The Pioneers fought back to score on a six-yard rush by Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., N. Canton Hoover H.S.), in which a failed two-point conversion attempt followed, and could get no closer as the Cavaliers posted their seventh straight win over Malone. Walsh holds an 8-3 lead in the series. Reifsnyder completed 14 of 21 passes for 151 yards, including one interception. He also rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown. A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.) led the squad in receiving with five catches for 80 yards and also ran back three kickoffs for 46 yards. Freeman paced the ground attack with 93 yards rushing on 21 carries, including a touchdown, and Tyler Parry (Fr., Loxahatchee, FL) punted four times for 165 yards, an average of 41.25 yards per punt. Defensively, DB Cody Kapostasy (Jr., Fairport H.S.) paced the team with nine tackles (two solo) followed by CB Doug Alford (Fr., St. Peter Chanel H.S.) with eight tackles (five solo) and a pass break up. Linebacker Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) had eight tackles as well (three solo) while DB Chris Cruise (So., Field H.S.) posted seven tackles (five solo) and LB Justin Murphy added seven tackles (two solo, one TFL). This week, Malone (1-3, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) will travel to Geneva (PA) College (3-2, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. game. Men's Golf Wins Ohio Dominican Invitational; Jones, Gates Make All-Tourney Team; Pioneers Also Defeat Walsh In Dual Match The Malone College men's golf team captured the two-day Ohio Dominican University Invitational last Friday and Saturday among a nine-team field. Malone tallied a score of 595 (296-299) to win the event as Cedarville University placed second at 609 (307-302) and Ohio Dominican took third at 617 (313-304). Seton Hill (PA) University was fourth at 628 (322-306) while Urbana University rounded out the top five at 640 (327-313). Scotty Jones (Jr., East Palestine H.S.) again led the team, this time with a second-place overall finish at 144 (73-71), while Grant Gates (Jr., River Valley H.S.) placed fifth overall at 150 (75-75). Both athletes earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Jordan Grubb (Jr., Lake H.S.) finished third for the team with a 151 total (74-77), Scott Shenker (Sr., Twinsburg H.S.) posted a 152 (76-76), Aaron Strauch (Sr., Emporium, PA) tallied a 157 (74-83) and Darren Phipps (So., Lake H.S.) finished with a 162 (80-82). Earlier in the week (Tuesday), the Malone A and B teams competed in a dual match against Walsh University at the Shady Hollow Country Club. The Pioneer A team emerged victorious with a score of 288 as Walsh "A" came in second at 298. Walsh B was third at 310 while Malone B came in fourth at 324. Jones and Grubb paced the A team with rounds of 70 while Strauch was close behind with a 73. Other "A" scores included Gates at 75 and Shenker also at 75. The Pioneer B squad was led by Phipps who tallied a 73. Matt Stayer (So., Riverside H.S.) carded an 82, Nate Garwood (Jr., Ridgedale H.S.) posted an 84, Garret Barbush (Jr., Manheim, PA) recorded an 85 and Mike Johnson (Fr., Lake H.S.) had an 89. This week, the team will compete at the PowerAde Invitational in Coshocton, Ohio. Women's Golf Places Fourth At Ohio Dominican Invitational The Malone College women's golf team placed fourth among a six-team field at the Ohio Dominican University Invitational last Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers tallied a two-day score of 829 (428-401) as Seton Hill (PA) University won the event at 721 (363-358). Walsh University took second at 726 (367-359) and Capital University was third at 763 (392-371). Rounding out the field was Urbana University in fifth at 841 (424-417) and Ohio Dominican in sixth at 843 (401-442). Megan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) paced the Pioneers by finishing 13th overall with a score of 197 (100-97) while Heather Hall (So., Bellefontaine H.S.) was right behind in 14th at 198 (98-100). Other scores for Malone were Heather Grovemiller (Jr., Perry H.S.) in 18th at 203 (108-95), Marissa Brown (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) in 26th at 235 (126-109) and Jenny Green (So., Oak Harbor H.S.) in 27th at 236 (122-114). This week, Malone will compete at the Walsh University Invitational on Monday and Tuesday and will finish out the week by hosting the annual Malone Invitational on Thursday at the Zoar Village Golf Course. |
