Women's Golf - Malone finished fourth among six teams at the Walsh University Invitational last Monday and Tuesday; Malone also won its own Fall Invitational on Thursday at the Zoar Golf Course Note: For statistics and standings of Malone teams, check out www.amcsports.org and/or www.mid-statesfootball.org. The Malone College football team defeated Geneva (PA) College last Saturday 15-14 at Geneva to earn its first conference victory of the season in two MSFA Mideast games thus far in the '05 campaign. In addition, the Malone win tied the overall series with Geneva at 7-7 and was the first victory at Geneva for Malone since 1994 (only the second Malone win ever at Geneva). On an extremely sloppy field in which jerseys were not even recognizable later in the contest, the Pioneers gained 67 rushing yards and 158 passing yards for a total of 225 yards while Geneva tallied 29 yards rushing and 204 yards passing for 233 total yards. With the win, Malone’s record now stands at 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MSFA Mideast. Geneva recorded the only score of the first quarter on a safety for the early 2-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Golden Tornadoes scored on a 21-yard pass but Malone blocked the extra point attempt making the score 8-0 at the half. Shawn O’Halloran (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) kicked a 23-yard field goal (lone score of the third quarter) to cut the Geneva lead to 8-3. The Pioneers then drove 94 yards in 17 plays that ended with a 28-yard TD pass from QB Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) to WR A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.) to give the squad their first lead of the game (9-8, two-point conversion failed) with 6:10 remaining. Geneva regained the lead (14-9, two-point conversion failed) with just over two minutes left in the contest on a two-yard run. However, with under a minute remaining, Reifsnyder scored on a five-yard run (PAT failed) to secure the thrilling 15-14 victory. Reifsnyder completed 13 of 25 passes for 158 yards, including one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran for 23 yards on eight carries, including the gamewinning touchdown. Running back Josh Luyster (So., Union Local H.S.) paced the ground attack with 51 yards on 19 carries while Freeman tallied nine yards on four carries. Owen led the squad in receiving with six receptions for 100 yards, including a touchdown. On special teams, Owen ran one kickoff back 25 yards while DB Michael Wright (So., North Canton Hoover H.S.) returned three punts for 28 yards. Defensively, LB Justin Murphy (So., Minerva H.S.) paced the team with 14 total tackles (six solo, two TFL, .5 sacks) and one pass breakup. Linebacker Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) posted eight tackles (one solo, one TFL, .5 sacks) followed by DB Cody Kapostasy (Jr., Fairport H.S.) with seven tackles (three solo, two TFL). Linebacker Dan Hromada (So., Padua Franciscan H.S.) added six tackles (one solo, two TFL, one sack) while DL Brian Landies (Sr., Chardon H.S.) posted five tackles (three solo, four TFL, 3.5 sacks). Cornerback Doug Alford (Fr., St. Peter Chanel H.S.) snagged the squad’s lone interception and made two tackles. This week, Malone (2-3, 1-1 MSFA Mideast) will host Ohio Dominican University (1-5, 0-3 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the team's Homecoming game. Men's Cross Country Finishes Third At Ohio Intercollegiates; Women Place 13th The Malone College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Ohio Intercollegiates at Ohio Wesleyan University (Delaware, Ohio) last Friday as a record 47 institutions were represented. The Pioneer men placed an impressive third at the meet while the Malone women took 13th overall. The Malone men's team earned its third-place finish among 41 teams that scored as the Pioneers tallied 105 points while The Ohio State University captured the men's title with 64 points. Ohio University finished in the runner-up with 75 points. The University of Cincinnati took fourth with 112 points and Kent State University rounded out the top five with 139 points. In addition, Mt. Union College took 12th (356), Walsh University was 25th (666) and The College of Wooster placed 29th (894). Ryan Kienzle (So., GlenOak H.S.) led the way for Malone with an 11th-place finish overall in a time of 26:17.8 while Bryan Straniero (Sr., Berkshire H.S.) was next for the team in 19th at 26:44.3. Others who scored for the team were Nik Schweikert (Fr., Beavercreek H.S.) in 21st (26:47.5), Justin Baum (So., Kenston H.S.) in 26th (26:50.7) and Curtin Mortenson (Sr., Kodiak, Alaska) in 28th (26:51.7). Also competing for the team were Luke McCluggage (So., Jackson-Milton H.S.), who placed 29th in 26:52.7, and Ryan Crocker (Fr., CVCA), who finished 88th in 28:04.4. The Malone women's team posted a score of 383 for its 13th-place finish as The University of Akron was the women's team title with 71 points. Ohio State took second at 82, Cincinnati was third at 129, Bowling Green State University came in fourth at 149 and Miami University rounded out the top five with 172 points. In addition, Mt. Union was 16th (477), Wooster came in 25th (713) and Walsh took 33rd (1013). Joanna Genter (Jr., Crestview H.S.) paced the team with a 10th-place finish overall in a time of 18:44.7 while Ashley Thomas (Sr., Anchorage, AK) was next for the squad in 73rd (20:00.5). Also scoring for the team were Lauren Sloan (Jr., Kent Roosevelt H.S.) in 86th (20:12.8), Carrie Hart (Jr., La Brae H.S.) in 103rd (20:28.6) and Loren Reineke (Jr., Anna H.S.) in 111th (20:37.3). Also competing for the Pioneers were Sarah Parks (Sr., Revere H.S.), who finished in 162nd at 21:36.0, and Rachel Heflen (Jr., Orrville H.S.) in 181st (22:00.4). An open race for both men and women was also held at the event and former Malone All-American (2004) and current graduate assistant coach Leo Kormanik competed and won the men's race among over 350 runners in a time of 25:55., more than 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. This week, the Malone teams are idle and will next compete on Saturday, October 22nd at the Southeastern Classic in Rome, Georgia. The Malone College volleyball team earned a five-set victory against local rival Walsh University at home last Tuesday by the score of 30-24, 20-30, 30-21, 21-30, 15-10. The Pioneers then lost 23-30, 27-30, 26-30 at Tiffin University last Thursday to close out the week. With the 1-1 week, Malone’s record is now 10-14 overall and 4-4 in the AMC South Division. Against Walsh, Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) slammed down 16 kills followed closely by Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) with 15 kills. O’Hara also paced the squad in digs with a team-best 22 followed by Chafins with 15 digs. Katie Wright (So., Dover H.S.) amassed 57 assists and five blocks while Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) also added five blocks. At Tiffin, Chafins paced the team with 10 kills and 18 digs followed by O’Hara with nine kills and 16 digs. In addition, Juli Harding (Jr., Garaway H.S.) collected four blocks while Wright recorded 27 assists. This week, Malone (10-14, 4-4 AMC S) will travel to Notre Dame (OH) College (9-12, 4-6 AMC N) on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match. The squad will then host a tri-match on Thursday in which Malone will face Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (27-8, 4-4 AMC S) at 5:00 p.m., Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Geneva (PA) College (6-14, 4-3 AMC N) will play each other at 7:00 p.m., and Malone will take on Geneva at 9:00 p.m. The Pioneers will conclude the week by hosting Cedarville University (24-1, 8-0 AMC S) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in its Homecoming contest. The Malone College women’s soccer team, in three contests on the week, tied Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College 0-0 in double overtime last Monday (away) and tied Walsh University 3-3 in double overtime at home on Wednesday. The Pioneers then concluded the week with a 5-1 victory at home over Urbana University on Saturday. With the 1-0-2 week, Malone is now 7-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the AMC South Division. At Roberts Wesleyan, the two teams battled through regulation and two 10 minute overtime periods but neither could find the back of the net. The Pioneers posted 13 shots on goal and goalie Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) collected five saves. Roberts Wesleyan took seven shots and made 11 saves. Against Walsh, Malone struck first with an unassisted goal by Megan Gasparin (Sr., Renfrew, PA) in the 13th minute. However, the Cavaliers tallied three straight goals to post a 3-1 advantage at the half. The Pioneers cut the lead to 3-2 in the 50th minute of play on a clear by Amanda Zabukovec (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) to Aleesha Denmeade (Fr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) for the score. Then in the 76th minute, Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) found the back of the net off a pass from Fleur Wynne-Morgan (So., County Kerry, Ireland) to tie the game at 3-3. The contest remained tied at the end of regulation and throughout both 10-minute overtime periods. Malone tallied 20 shots on goal and keeper Brown collected six saves. Walsh took nine shots and made 17 saves. Against Urbana, Denmeade gave the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead off a cross from Taryn Carlson (Jr., Poland H.S.). The Blue Knights came back with their own goal a minute later and the half ended with the squads tied at 1-1. In the second half, Malone scored four goals, including a hat trick (three goals) by Herbst to secure the 5-1 win. Denmeade and Gasparin each recorded an assist. The Pioneers posted 19 shots while Brown made five saves as Urbana took six shots and made 15 saves. This week, Malone (7-4-3, 2-1-1 AMC S) will host the University of Rio Grande (1-6-0, 1-4-0) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the team's Homecoming game. The Malone College men’s soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime on the road to Walsh University last Tuesday and lost another tough battle to Urbana University 3-2 at home on Saturday, marking the team's seventh one-goal loss this season. With the 0-2 week, Malone is now 3-10-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the AMC South Division. At Walsh, the Pioneers trailed 1-0 at the half before a final flurry of action in which four goals were scored in the final seven minutes of regulation and the first two minutes of overtime. Greg Carroll (So., Dunfermline, Scotland) tied the game at 1-1 off a direct kick with just six and a half minutes left in the game. The Cavaliers then regained the lead in the 88th minute off a penalty kick but Pat Quinn (So., Copley H.S.) tied the game at 2-2 in the 89th minute sending the contest into overtime. Walsh then secured the win with a goal in the 92nd minute of play. Malone tallied seven shots on the day while keeper Michael Porter recorded four saves. Walsh also took seven shots and made five saves. Against Urbana, Kevin Fischer (Sr., Jackson H.S.) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead off a pass from Nate Watson (Sr., CVCA) before Urbana stormed back with back-to-back goals to go up 2-1. Barry McConnochie (Fr., Glasgow, Scotland) later sent a cross to Zach Rausch (So., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) to end the half tied at 2-2. The Blue Knights scored the game-winning goal, though, in the 64th minute to earn the 3-2 victory. This week, Malone (3-10-1, 0-4-0 AMC S) will travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (8-3-2, 2-2-0 AMC S) on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. match and will host the University of Rio Grande (11-0-0, 3-0-0 AMC S) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Pioneers' Homecoming game. Men's Golf Team Ties For Second At PowerAde Fall Collegiate
The Malone College men's golf team earned a tie for the runner-up finish among an outstanding NCAA Div. II and III and NAIA field last Friday in an event that was shortened to 27 holes (from 54) as day two was cancelled due to rain. At the River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio, Malone tallied a score of 443 to tie for the runner-up spot with Mt. Union College as Otterbein College took the team title with a score of 425. Tiffin University finished fourth at 449 and the University of Charleston (W.V.) rounded out the top five at 452. The Pioneer B team finished in a tie for eighth place with Walsh University's A squad. Scott Shenker (Sr., Twinsburg H.S.) paced the Malone A unit with a score of 109 (70-39) while Grant Gates (Jr., River Valley H.S.) was right behind at 110 (75-35). Also competing for the A team were Jordan Grubb (Jr., Lake H.S.) at 111 (76-35), Scotty Jones (Jr., East Palestine H.S.) at 113 (77-36) and Aaron Strauch (Sr., Emporium, PA) at 113 (73-40). The Malone B team was led by Darren Phipps (So., Lake H.S.), who carded a 113 (73-40), followed closely by Mike Johnson (Fr., Lake H.S.) at 114 (73-41). Other Malone B scores included Matt Strayer (So., Riverside H.S.) at 117 (76-41), Garret Barbush (Jr., Manheim, PA) at 118 (78-40) and Nate Garwood (Jr., Ridgedale H.S.) at 121 (80-41). This week, the team will close out its fall season by hosting the NCCAA National Championships at the River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 10-11) at 9:00 a.m. Malone is the defending NCCAA national champion and has won the national title three times since 1999. A record 24 teams are competing for this year's national title. The Malone College women's golf team placed fourth among six teams at the Walsh University Invitational last Monday and Tuesday but went on to win its own Invitational on Thursday at the Zoar Golf Course in Zoar. At Walsh, Malone posted a two-day score of 770 (390-380) as Tiffin University won the event at 694 (349-345). Trevecca Nazarene (TN) University took second at 701, Walsh was third at 704, Urbana University placed fifth at 857 and Ohio Dominican University came in sixth at 874. Megan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) paced the team with a score of 168 (86-82) to finish with a solid fourth-place finish overall, just four shots by the co-medalists. Heather Grovemiller (Jr., Perry H.S.) was next for Malone at 196 (104-92) followed by Jenny Green (So., Oak Harbor H.S.) at 205 (103-102). Other Pioneer scores included Heather Hall (So., Bellefontaine H.S.) at 211 (97-104) and Marissa Brown (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) at 217 (108-109). In the Malone event, a tournament that was supposed to have five teams entered had only two after two teams cancelled just before the event and one team did have enough golfers to receive a team score. Malone's score of 367 earned the team a victory as Ursuline College finished second at 441. Notre Dame (OH) College had three athletes competing but did not receive a team score. Hall led the team and won medalist honors with an 85, which was her lowest 18-hole round ever, while Grovemiller placed second overall with an 88. Grubb finished third with a round of 90, Brown took fifth at 104 and Green placed eighth at 107. This week, the team will compete at the Tiffin University Invitational on Monday at 10:00 a.m. |
