Women’s Soccer Beats Rio Grande 2-0; Coach Todd Clark Collects 100th Win

     The Malone College women’s soccer team defeated the University of Rio Grande 2-0 at home last Saturday in the team's homecoming game in its only contest of the week.  That victory earned seventh-year head coach Todd Clark his 100th win as the Pioneer women's soccer coach (100-32-12).  With the 1-0 week, the Pioneers are now 8-4-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Rio, the teams remained scoreless throughout the first period.  Then in the 69th minute, Megan Gasparin (Sr., Renfrew, PA) scored from 20 yards out off a pass from Ashley Dennerlein (Fr., Baden, PA).  Fleur Wynne-Morgan (So., County Kerry, Ireland) added a goal off a corner pass from Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) to secure the 2-0 win.  Malone tallied 17 shots on goal while Rio took no shots and made 15 saves.
     This week, Malone (8-4-3, 3-1-1 AMC S) will travel to Shawnee State University on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. match and will host Ohio Dominican University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Volleyball Posts 2-2 Record On Week

     The Malone College volleyball team picked up a road win (30-28, 27-30, 30-25, 30-26) against Notre Dame (OH) College last Tuesday to open its week.  The Pioneers then fell 3-1 (30-23, 18-30, 17-30, 26-30) to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday but rebounded to defeat Geneva (PA) College 30-20, 28-30, 30-18, 30-24 in the nightcap in Thursday's tri-match.  The team finished the week with a loss in its homecoming game to NAIA #19 Cedarville University 15-30, 22-30, 25-30 on Saturday.  With the 2-2 week, Malone is now 12-16 overall and 4-6 in the AMC South Division.
     At Notre Dame, Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) slammed down 18 kills followed by Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) and Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.  Katie Wright (Fr., Dover H.S.) collected 54 assists while O’Hara served a team-best four aces.  Defensively, Chafins scooped up 22 digs while Yocum tallied eight blocks, including three solo blocks.
     Against MVNU, Chafins paced the offense with 14 kills followed by O’Hara with 13 kills and Yocum with 12 kills.  Wright tallied 45 assists while O’Hara collected four aces.  Defensively, O’Hara recorded 26 digs while Yocum posted 11 blocks, including three solo blocks.
     Against Geneva, O’Hara slammed down 16 kills and scooped up 19 digs while Yocum posted a solid game with 14 kills and three aces.  In addition, Wright amassed 50 assists in the match. 
     Against Cedarville, Chafins led the way with 12 kills and 13 digs.  Wright added 31 assists while Juli Harding (Jr., Garaway H.S.) collected four blocks.
     This week, Malone (12-16, 4-6 AMC S) will host the University of Rio Grande on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.  The squad will then travel to Ohio Dominican University on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest.  On Saturday, the Pioneers will compete in a tri-match at Urbana University.  At 1:00 p.m., the squad will face Shawnee State University and, at 3:00 p.m., will face Urbana.

Men’s Soccer Loses 3-0 To Mt. Vernon Nazarene; Falls To NAIA #2 Rio Grande 1-0

     The Malone College men’s soccer team lost a 3-0 decision on the road against Mt. Vernon Nazarene University last Wednesday in its first game of the week and then lost a hard-fought 1-0 contest to NAIA #2 ranked and undefeated University of Rio Grande last Saturday in its homecoming contest.  With the 0-2 week, Malone is now 3-12-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the AMC South Division.
     At MVNU, the Pioneers trailed 2-0 at the half en route to the 3-0 loss.  Malone tallied 10 shots on goal while goalie Michael Porter (So., Highland H.S.) posted 10 saves.  MVNU took 13 shots on goal and made five saves.
     Against Rio, the Pioneers played well and kept the Redmen from scoring until the 69th minute.  Malone posted five shots while Porter tallied 25 saves.  Rio took 26 shots and made one save.
     This week, Malone (3-12-1, 0-6-0 AMC S) will travel to Shawnee State University on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. game and will host Ohio Dominican University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to close out its season.

Football Team Falls To Ohio Dominican 27-13

     The Malone College football team lost a 27-13 contest at home last Saturday to Ohio Dominican University in the team's homecoming game.  The Pioneers posted 166 yards rushing and 206 yards passing for a total of 372 yards while the Panthers tallied 124 yards rushing and 338 yards passing for 462 total yards.  With the loss, the Pioneers are now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the MSFA Mideast.
     Malone struck first with a 23-yard rush by Jevontae Freeman (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.) late in the first period.  Shawn O’Halloran (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) kicked the extra point to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with 4:44 left in the first quarter.
     Malone scored its second touchdown of the contest early in the second quarter. The squad traveled 80 yards in 12 plays ending with a 12-yard TD pass from Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) to Freeman.  O’Halloran’s extra point was blocked making the score 13-0.  As the half ended, though, the Panthers gained momentum with a 31-yard pass that went for a touchdown (PAT good) to cut the lead to 13-7.
     ODU took its first lead of the game (14-13) in the third quarter with a one-yard TD pass (PAT good).  The Panthers then extended their lead to 20-13 on a six-yard TD pass (PAT blocked) just after the start of the final quarter and added a final touchdown (a 15-yard pass, PAT good) with 10:55 remaining to secure the 27-13 victory.
     Reifsnyder completed 20 of 38 passes for 206 yards, including two interceptions and one touchdown.  Freeman paced the ground attack with 102 yards on 16 carries, including a touchdown.  Michael Wright (So., North Canton Hoover H.S.) added 29 yards on five carries followed by Reifsnyder with 19 yards on 13 carries.  Wide receiver Mike Clapham (So., Elyria Catholic H.S.) led the way in receiving with six catches for 77 yards while WR Josh Settlemire (So., Howland H.S.) also caught six passes for 73 yards.
     On special teams, punter Tyler Parry (Fr., Loxahatchee, FL) recorded four punts for 168 yards (43 yards long).  In addition, A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.) returned two kickoffs for 39 yards 
     Defensively, LB Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) paced the squad with 13 tackles (11 solo) followed by LB Dan Hromada (So., Padua Franciscan H.S.) with 10 tackles (six solo).  Defensive back Fred Weidenthal (Fr., Austintown-Fitch H.S.) posted nine tackles (five solo) and a pass deflection while LB Justin Murphy (So., Minerva H.S.) also posted nine tackles (five solo, one TFL).  Defensive lineman Jeff Jeffries (So., Meadowdale H.S.) added five tackles (four solo, four TFL, one sack) followed by DL Brian Landies (Sr., Chardon H.S.) with five tackles (three solo, two TFL, one sack).  DB Chris Cruise (So., Field H.S.) also recorded five tackles (four solo) as did DB Rayshawn Cole (Jr., Firestone H.S.), including three solo tackles.  Cornerback Doug Alford (Fr., St. Peter Chanel H.S.) tallied three tackles (two solo) and two pass deflections while DL Sean McMurray (Jr., Twin Valley South H.S.) recorded a tackle, a pass break-up and two blocked kicks.
     This week, Malone (2-4, 1-2 MSFA Mideast) will travel to Urbana University (5-2, 2-1 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
 
Men’s Golf Team Ties For Sixth At NCCAA National Championships; Grubb Earns NCCAA All-America Honors

     The Malone College men’s golf team closed out its fall season last week by earning a tie for sixth place in an elite NCCAA field last Monday and Tuesday at the River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio.  The Championship was hosted by Malone and featured a record 24-team field (from 16 states) competing for this year's national title.
     Malone tallied a score of 605 (308-297) for its sixth-place finish as Indiana Wesleyan University took the national title with a score of 590 (298-292).  North Greenville (SC) College, Southeastern (FL) College and Northland Baptist Bible (WI) College all tied for runner-up honors at 600 while Bethel (IN) College rounded out the top five at 602.  Southern Wesleyan (SC) University tied for sixth with Malone at 605.
    Jordan Grubb (Jr., Lake H.S.) led the way for the Pioneers with a two-day score of 148 (73-75) which tied him for 10th-place overall and earned him NCCAA All-America honors.  Aaron Strauch (Sr., Emporium, PA) was close behind and missed All-America accolades by just one shot with a score of 149 (77-72).  Also competing for the team was Scott Shenker (Sr., Twinsburg H.S.), with a 153 (79-74), Scotty Jones (Jr., East Palestine H.S.), at 157 (79-78), and Grant Gates (Jr., River Valley H.S.) with a 157 (81-76).  
     In addition, Jones was one of 11 athletes to earn NCCAA Men's Golf Scholar Athlete honors by achieving at least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average (among juniors and seniors who have at least two years of competition at the intercollegiate level).

Women’s Golf Finishes Ninth At Tiffin Invitational; To Compete In AMC/NAIA Region IX Championships Monday

     The Malone College women’s golf team placed ninth among twelve teams at the Tiffin University Invitational on Monday, October 10.  Malone posted a score of 381 as The University of Findlay won the event with a score of 334.  Bethel (IN) College took second at 337, Tiffin was third at 339, Otterbein College came in fourth at 344 and Ohio Northern University rounded out the top five at 353.
     Heather Grovemiller (Jr., Perry H.S.) paced the team with a score of 91 followed by Megan Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) at 94 and Heather Hall (So., Bellefontaine H.S.) at 95.  Jenny Green (So., Oak Harbor H.S.) and Marissa Brown (Sr., John Glenn H.S.) also competed for the team with scores of 101 and 103, respectively.  
     This week, the team will close out its fall season by competing in the American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX Championships at Ohio Dominican University on Monday.  The winner of this tournament earns an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships at the Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana May 23-26, 2006.
