Women’s Soccer Defeats Shawnee State 4-1, Falls To Ohio Dominican 4-2; AMC Playoffs Still In Sight

The Malone College women’s soccer team split a pair of AMC South Division contests last week in the final drive for the AMC postseason tournament.  The Pioneers beat Shawnee State University 4-1 (away) last Tuesday but were defeated at home by Ohio Dominican University 4-2 on Saturday.  With the 1-1 week, Malone is now 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the AMC South.  With one contest remaining in the regular season, at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.), a Malone victory over Mt. Vernon Nazarene would create a three-way tie among Malone, Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Walsh University, all of whom would have 5-2-1 final conference records at that point (Walsh has already completed its conference play).  Only two of these teams, though, would qualify for the AMC postseason.  A Malone loss at MVNU would eliminate Malone from the AMC postseason.
At Shawnee State, Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) gave the Pioneers an early lead with a goal off a pass from Julie Wade (So., Clearfork H.S.).  Shawnee State scored in the 33rd minute and the half ended tied 1-1.  In the second half, Aleesha Denmeade (Fr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) scored what would become the game-winning goal off a corner from Herbst.  Herbst also tallied two more goals for a hat trick (three goals), including a corner kick and a through ball from Denmeade en route to the 4-1 victory.  Malone posted 20 shots on goal while backup goalie Ashley White (Fr., Wheeling, WV) recorded three saves in the final 26 minutes.  Shawnee State tallied four shots and collected 11 saves.
Against Ohio Dominican, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead after a diving header by Megan Gasparin (Sr., Renfrew H.S.).  The Panthers then ran off four straight goals to end the half with a commanding 4-1 advantage.  Amanda Zabukovec (Jr., Brunswick H.S.) made a penalty kick for the only score of the second half en route to the 4-2 loss.  Both squads recorded eight shots on goal in the contest.  Starting goalie Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) collected one save while Ali Mueller (Sr., Mason H.S.), who came on as goalie for the second half, made three saves.  ODU posted five saves.
This week, Malone (9-5-3, 4-2-1 AMC S) will end its 2005 regular season with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday, again with the aforementioned playoff implications.

Football Team Loses To NAIA #20 Urbana University 42-34; Brad Reifsnyder Still Earns MSFA Mideast Offensive Player of the Week

The Malone College football team lost an offensive shootout on the road to NAIA #20 Urbana University 42-34 last Saturday in a game that, despite the loss, saw several Malone individual records broken.  Behind a school-record-breaking 416 yards passing by junior quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.), Malone amassed 462 total yards (which included 46 yards rushing) while Urbana nearly matched it with 434 total yards (247 passing, 187 rushing).
The 416 yards passing by Reifsnyder shattered the old record of 382 yards set by Brian Magrell in the 1998 season (in a 46-41playoff loss at Georgetown, KY).  Reifsnyder also broke the individual total offense record by posting 450 total yards himself (416 passing, 34 rushing) to eclipse the previous record of 401set by Eric Rector against Walsh in the 2000 season (a 35-33 loss to Walsh).  In addition, with five touchdown tosses in the contest, Reifsnyder matched his own previous school record of five TD passes in a game, set last year in a 39-32 win at Ohio Dominican University.  For his efforts on the day, Reifsnyder was named the MSFA Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week and will be up for consideration for NAIA National Player of the Week (to be voted on late Monday).
Wide receiver Josh Settlemire (So. Howland H.S.) also got into the Malone record book with 192 total receiving yards in the contest (8 catches, 2 TD's) as he surpassed the old mark of 185 yards by Shane Hostetler vs. St. Joseph's (IN) in the 1998 season.
With the loss, Malone drops to 2-5 on the season overall and to 1-3 in the MSFA Mideast while Urbana improved to 6-2 and 3-1.
The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Reifsnyder to Settlemire.  Shawn O’Halloran’s (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) extra point was attempt was blocked.  Less than a minute later, Urbana returned a kickoff 46 yards setting up a 13-yard TD run (PAT good) to take a 7-6 lead.  The Blue Knights also scored a 37-yard field goal to end the quarter with a 10-6 advantage.
Urbana added another field goal (36 yards) to start the second quarter and extend its lead to 13-6.  Reifsnyder then connected with Settlemire once again for a 34-yard TD pass (O’Halloran PAT failed) to cut the lead to 13-12.  With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Malone traveled 60 yards in six plays ending with a one-yard TD pass from Reifsnyder to wide receiver A.J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.).  Reifsnyder and Owen also connected for the two-point conversion giving the Pioneers a 20-13 lead.  Malone extended that lead with a minute left as Owen caught a 16-yard TD pass from Reifsnyder.  The two-point conversion by quarterback Josh Shaffer (Jr., Painesville H.S.) failed making the score 26-13.  Urbana added a final field goal as the first half ended to cut the Malone lead to 26-16.
In the third quarter, the Blue Knights ran off 26 straight points, including a nine-yard TD pass, a 49-yard TD pass, a 29-yard TD rush and a 16-yard TD pass en route to a 42-26 advantage. The two-point conversion on the first touchdown failed and the PAT attempt on the third TD was blocked.
Malone scored one more touchdown in the fourth quarter, on a seven-yard pass from Reifsnyder to wide receiver John Regas (Sr., Lake H.S.). Reifsnyder then passed to Justin Romantic (Fr., Midview H.S.) for the two-point conversion making the final score 42-34.
Reifsnyder completed 25 of 40 passes for 416 yards, including two interceptions and five touchdowns.  He also rushed for 34 yards on 15 carries.  Running back Josh Luyster (So., Union Local H.S.) contributed nine yards rushing on eight carries.  Settlemire snagged the record-breaking eight receptions for 198 yards, including two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Mike Clapham (So., Elyria Catholic H.S.) caught four passes for 41 yards while Regas grabbed four passes for 34 yards and a TD.  Owen recorded three receptions for 47 yards and two touchdowns.
On special teams, Owen returned four kickoffs for 91 yards while punter Tyler Parry (Fr., Loxahatchee, FL) punted five times for 155 yards (long of 37 yards).
Defensively, defensive back Rayshawn Cole (Jr., Firestone H.S.) led the way with 12 tackles (five solo) followed by DB Chris Cruise (So., Field H.S.) with 11 tackles (five solo, one TFL).  Linebacker Justin Murphy (So., Minerva H.S.) posted nine tackles (three solo, five TFL) while LB Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) made eight tackles (three solo).  Linebacker Dan Hromada (So., Padua Franciscan H.S.) added six tackles (two solo, one TFL), a pass deflection and a blocked kick.
This week, Malone (2-5, 1-3 MSFA Mideast) will host NAIA #2 University of St. Francis (IN) (7-0, 4-0) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
