Volleyball Defeats Walsh, Loses To Edinboro And Cedarville To Close Out Regular Season; AMC Tournament Qualification Likely The Malone College volleyball team beat Walsh University 30-25, 25-30, 30-27, 30-21 at Walsh last Tuesday in the first of three matches on the week. The Pioneers then fell on the road against Edinboro (PA) University 30-27, 23-30, 20-30, 18-30 Thursday night and lost to NAIA 17th-ranked Cedarville University 13-30, 28-30, 22-30 (away) Saturday to conclude its regular-season schedule. Malone completed its '05 regular season with a 15-20 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the AMC South Division. Although official seedings and pairings for the AMC Tournament (held Nov. 11-12 at Cedarville) will not be known until at least Monday, November 7th, it is likely that Malone will earn a spot in the AMC event. If they qualify, it would be as either the fifth or sixth seed on the AMC South side (six teams from each of the North and South Divisions will qualify for the 12-team event). At Walsh, Ashley Yocum (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) paced the offense with 18 kills and three service aces followed by Racquel O’Hara (Jr., Claymont H.S.) with 16 kills and two aces. Bethany Thompson (Fr., Tusky Central Catholic H.S.) collected 57 assists. In addition, Amber Chafins (Jr., Jonathan Alder H.S.) led the defense with 16 digs followed by O’Hara and Amanda Robinson (So., Claymont H.S.) with 15 and 14 digs, respectively. At Edinboro, O’Hara tallied 13 kills followed by Katie O’Hare (Fr., Orrville H.S.) with 10 kills. Thompson recorded 27 assists while Talin Celuch (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) posted three aces. Defensively, O’Hara scooped up 18 digs followed by Chafins with 17 digs. At Cedarville, Chafins paced the offense with 12 kills. Thompson tallied 21 assists while O’Hara added five service aces and posted a team-high 17 digs. This week, Malone will not compete and will await word early next week to see if they will qualify for the 12-team AMC Tournament (hosted by Cedarville University Nov. 11-12). Women’s Soccer Falls To Mt. Vernon Nazarene 4-0 To Close Out Regular Season; NCCAA Competition Next The Malone College women’s soccer team lost 4-0 on the road last Tuesday at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University to close out its regular season schedule. The Pioneers finished the regular campaign with an overall mark of 9-6-3 and an AMC South Division record of 4-3-1. While the team did not qualify for the AMC Tournament, they will compete in the NCCAA regional playoffs. Malone will play at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, November 5th (2:00 p.m.) in the NCCAA Regional Championship Game. The winner will advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida November 16-21. At MVNU last Tuesday, the teams remained scoreless at halftime but the Cougars netted four straight goals in the second half to secure the 4-0 shutout. Malone tallied 11 shots while starting goalie Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) posted 10 saves and backup keeper Ashley White (Fr., Wheeling, WV) collected one save. MVNU recorded 17 shots and made nine saves. This week, Malone (9-6-3) will travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (12-5-1) on Saturday (Nov. 5th) for the NCCAA regional championship game (2:00 p.m.). The winner will qualify for the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida November 16-21. The Malone College football team lost 28-7 at home last Saturday to NAIA second-ranked University of St. Francis (IN) who kept its record perfect at 8-0 this season (5-0 MSFA Mideast). Malone stayed with the powerful Cougars through the first half (tied 7-7 at halftime) and were still in the game through three quarters (trailing just 14-7) before the visitors pulled away for the 21-point victory. On the night, the Pioneers could not get going on offense, rushing for 41 yards and passing for 133 yards for 174 total yards while USF rushed for 276 yards and passed for 159 yards for 435 total yards. With the loss, Malone falls to 2-6 overall on the season and to 1-4 in the MSFA Mideast League. St. Francis took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter after traveling 79 yards in 15 plays and ending with a four-yard touchdown run (PAT good). The Pioneers answered by driving 65 yards in 12 plays and scoring on a four-yard pass from quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) to wide receiver A. J. Owen (So., Cleveland Heights H.S.). Shawn O’Halloran (So., Poland Seminary H.S.) kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. Neither team scored in the second quarter as the halftime score remained tied at 7-7. St. Francis drove 84 yards in nine plays with just over six minutes left in the third quarter to score on an 18-yard run (PAT good) and pull ahead 14-7. In the fourth quarter, USF scored two more TD’s, each one-yard rushes (both PATs good) to secure the 28-7 win. Reifsnyder completed 18 of 27 passes, including one touchdown. Owen paced the receivers with seven catches for 50 yards (one TD) followed by WR John Regas (Sr., Lake H.S.) with five receptions and 39 yards and WR Anthony Potento (So., McKinley H.S.) with four catches for 28 yards. Running back Justin Romantic (Fr., Midview H.S.) paced the ground game with 27 yards on 11 carries. On special teams, punter Tyler Parry (Fr., Loxahatchee, FL) punted six times for 198 yards (33.0 avg.) while Owen returned four kickoffs for 71 yards. Defensively, DB Rayshawn Cole (Jr., Firestone H.S.) led the squad with 12 tackles, including 10 solo tackles, followed by linebacker Dan Hromada (So., Padua Franciscan H.S.) with 11 tackles (seven solo). Linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (So., Fairport H.S.) posted eight tackles (three solo, two TFL and a sack) while Jamal Gambrell (So., Maple Heights H.S.) collected seven tackles (four solo, one TFL) and one forced fumble. Defensive back Anthony Johnson (Fr., Maple Heights H.S.) added five tackles (three solo) and a fumble recovery. This week, Malone (2-6 1-4 MSFA Mideast) will host Taylor (IN) University (0-8, 0-5 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. |
