The Malone College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NAIA National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky last Saturday and finished seventh and eighth, respectively, at the event as two Malone athletes (one from each squad) earned All-America honors in the process. The men's team tallied 251 points for their seventh-place finish among 28 teams as Virginia Intermont College won the national title with 52 points. Concordia (CA) University placed second (122), Lindenwood (MO) University was third (209), Oklahoma Baptist University came in fourth (221) and Azusa Pacific (CA) University rounded out the top five (222). The women's squad chalked up 322 points for their eighth-place finish among a 28-team field as Simon Fraser (B.C.) University took the national title with 74 points. Black Hills State (SD) University finished as the runner-up (190), University of British Columbia was third (209), Cedarville University came in fourth (212) and Concordia (CA) rounded out the top five (262).
For the Malone men, Ryan Kienzle (So., GlenOak H.S.) earned his first All-America honor as he placed 11th overall in a time of 25:01.50. Nik Schweikert (Fr., Beavercreek H.S.) was next for the team in 45th place in 25:33.70. Also scoring for the Pioneers were Bryan Straniero (Sr., Berkshire H.S.) in 67th (25:49.40), Curtis Mortenson (Sr., Kodiak, Alaska) in 96th (26:12.75) and Luke McCluggage (So., Jackson-Milton H.S.) in 133rd (26:36.65). Also competing for the Pioneer men's squad were Ryan Crocker (Fr., CVCA), who finished in 181st (27:02.00), and Justin Baum (So., Kenston H.S.) who finished 208th (27:23.15). For the Malone women, Joanna Genter (Jr., Crestview H.S.) collected her third straight All-America accolade by finishing an impressive fourth overall in a personal-best time of 17:41.80. Lauren Sloan (Jr., Kent Roosevelt H.S.) was next for the team as she finished 106th in 19:23.50. Also scoring for the squad were Loren Reineke (Jr., Anna H.S.) in 108th (19:24.10), Katie Bagley (Fr., Van Wert H.S.) in 109th (19:25.30) and Caity Schneider (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 122nd (19:34.85). Also competing for the Pioneer women were Ashley Thomas (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska) in 148th (19:47.70) and Carrie Hart (Jr., La Brae H.S.) in 169th (19:57.15). Women’s Soccer Posts 1-1 Mark So Far At NCCAA National Tournament; To Play In Third-Place Game The Malone College women’s soccer team competed in the first two of its three games at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida last Friday and Saturday in which eight teams participate and all play three contests to determine first through eighth places. On Friday in first-round action, the Pioneers advanced to the semifinal round with a 1-0 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) University. However, Malone fell to Trinity International (IL) University 2-0 on Saturday and will compete in the third-place contest on Monday. With the 1-1 record thus far at the event, Malone is currently 11-7-3 overall with one final game remaining on the season. In the Palm Beach Atlantic contest, the squads battled to a 0-0 tie at the half. In the second period, Ali Mueller (Sr., Mason H.S.) scored the game-winning goal off a feed from Julie Herbst (Jr., Dyer, IN) midway through the second half. The Pioneers posted nine shots on goal and goalie Sam Brown (Fr., Butler, PA) collected three saves while PBA took three shots on goal and made eight saves. Against Trinity International, Malone trailed 1-0 at halftime en route to the 2-0 loss. The Pioneers tallied three shots on goal and Brown recorded four saves while Trinity International took six shots and made three saves. This week, Malone (11-7-3) will face Hope International (CA) University (6-11-3) in the third-place game on Monday at 2:00 p.m. Women’s Basketball Falls To St. Vincent 78-63, Finishes Runner-Up In Comfort Inn Tourney The Malone College women’s basketball team lost 78-63 to St. Vincent (PA) College on the road last Tuesday in the first of three contests on the week . The Pioneers then hosted the 2005 Comfort Inn Tournament on Friday and Saturday and went 1-1 at the event. In game one Friday night, Malone defeated Kentucky Christian University 72-60 while Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College beat Nyack (NY) College 67-49 in the nightcap. On Saturday, Kentucky Christian beat Nyack 61-52 in the consolation game while the Pioneers fell to Roberts Wesleyan 73-69 in the championship contest. With the 1-1 week, Malone is now 1-3 overall. At St. Vincent, the Pioneers trailed 39-37 at the half and were outscored 39-26 in the second period in the 78-63 loss. Nikki Parson (Jr., Garaway H.S.) paced the offense with 17 points and ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Also in double figures was Kellyn Murphy (So., St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) and Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Murphy collected two blocks and three assists while Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.) also dished out three assists. As a team, Malone won the battle of the boards 40-37. Against Kentucky Christian, the Pioneers held a 32-27 advantage at the half en route to the 72-60 victory. Parson led all scorers with 25 points, including a 13-for-15 effort at the free throw line. Shiplett added 14 points while Nicki Sisson (So., Wayne Trace H.S.) contributed 13 points. Mishler dished out three assists while Parson collected a game-high six steals. Malone dominated the boards 41-28 as Parson tallied a team-best 12 rebounds. Against Roberts Wesleyan, the Pioneers trailed 37-31 at intermission and battled tough throughout the second half but lost 73-69. Parson and Mishler tallied 18 and 14 points, respectively, to pace Malone. Parson also grabbed eight rebounds but the Pioneers lost the battle of the boards 43-38. In addition, Parson represented Malone on the All-Tournament Team for Malone. This week, Malone (1-3) will host Cedarville University (5-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in its conference opener which is its only contest on the week. The Malone College men’s basketball team opened its season in New York last weekend by going 1-1 in a pair of very close contests. The Pioneers posted a victory (74-71) at Houghton (NY) College last Friday but then fell to Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College 74-70 on Saturday. The Pioneers are now 1-1 on the season. At Houghton, Malone led 32-30 at the half en route to the 74-71 victory. Tyler Renner (So., Garaway H.S.) led all scorers with 20 points (8-13 FG, 4-5 FT) followed by Chris Miller (Jr., Hiland H.S.) and Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Pioneers dominated the boards 52-32 as Renner ripped down a game-high 16 rebounds. In addition, Ben Carver (So., Shelby H.S.) paced the squad in assists with four. At Roberts Wesleyan, Malone trailed 38-31 at halftime but outscored the hosts 39-36 in the second half before falling 74-70. Schlabach paced the attack with a career-best 28 points, including a career-high eight three-pointers, while Miller added 13 points. Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) pulled down 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, but the Pioneers were outrebounded 53-43. In addition, Miller dished out three assists while Humphrey collected three steals. This week, Malone (1-1) will host Cedarville University (3-1)at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and will close out the week at home against Daemen (NY) College (6-2) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. |
