Women’s Soccer Team Finishes Fourth At NCCAA Nationals

     The Malone College women’s soccer team recently finished in fourth place at the eight-team NCCAA National Tournament held in Kissimmee, Florida.  On Monday (after winning its first game on Friday and losing its second game on Saturday), Malone competed in the tournament's third-place game against Hope International (CA) University.  The contest officially ended in a 1-1 tie after neither squad could score in the two overtime periods, however, Hope earned the third-place finish at the event, and Malone fourth, as Hope edged the Pioneers in penalty kicks by a 4-3 margin.  Malone concluded its 2005 season with an 11-7-4 record.
     Against Hope International, Malone fell behind 1-0 early in the first half.  Abbie Zippert (Sr., Cleveland Heights H.S.) then tied the contest at 1-1 in the 16th minute of play off a feed from Ashley Dennerlein (Fr., Baden, PA).  Neither team scored in either of the two 10-minute overtime periods and third place was decided on penalty kicks with Hope winning 4-3.  Scoring penalty kicks for Malone were Amanda Zabukovec (Jr., Brunswick H.S.), Ali Mueller (Sr., Mason, OH) and Taryn Carlson (Jr., Poland H.S.).

Women’s Basketball Loses 93-89 Thriller To NAIA #2 Cedarville

     The Malone College women’s basketball team lost a hard-fought game by the score of 93-89 to NAIA Div. II #2 Cedarville University at home last Tuesday in the conference opener.  With the loss, the Pioneers are now 1-4 overall on the season and 0-1 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Cedarville, Malone trailed 54-48 at the half but outscored the Yellow Jackets 41-39 in the second half before succumbing 93-89.  Nikki Parson (Jr., Garaway H.S.) paced the Pioneers with 25 points (10-13 FG, 5-5 FT) followed by Nicki Sisson (So., Wayne Trace H.S.) with 20 points, including six  three-pointers.  Also hitting double digits for Malone was Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) with 14 points and Kellyn Murphy (So., St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) with 12 points.  The Pioneers dominated the boards 44-31 as Shiplett ripped down a team-best 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards.  Murphy dished out a game-high seven assists while Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.) collected four steals.
     This week, Malone (1-4, 0-1 AMC S) will host Shawnee State University (7-0, 1-0 AMC S) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.  The squad will then compete in the Cornerstone (MI) University Tournament on Friday and Saturday, taking on host Cornerstone on Friday in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Men’s Basketball Falls To NAIA #5 Cedarville 98-74 And To Daemen 78-72

     The Malone College men’s basketball team its conference opener against NAIA Div. II #5 Cedarville University 98-74 last Tuesday at home and then dropped a 78-72 decision at home on Saturday to Daemen (NY) College in a non-conference contest.  With the 0-2 week, the Pioneers are now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Cedarville, Chris Miller (Jr., Hiland H.S.) and Craig Giesy (Jr., Bristol H.S.) each posted 13 points.  Brian Allerding (Jr., Loudonville H.S.) collected five rebounds but Malone lost the battle of the boards 42-31.  In addition, Miller tallied three assists and recorded four steals.
     Against Daemen, Miller led Malone’s offense again with 21 points followed by Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) with 16 points.  James Hannum (Jr., Massillon Washington H.S.) and Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) each added 10 points.  Humphrey grabbed eight boards while Schlabach tallied seven rebounds but the Pioneers were outrebounded 40-28. 
     This week, Malone (1-3, 0-1 AMC S) will host Shawnee State University (3-5, 0-0 AMC S) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.  The Pioneers will then host the Canton Marriott McKinley Grand Hotel Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, Fisher (MA) College takes on Lindsey Wilson (KY) College at 6:00 p.m. and Malone faces Kentucky Christian University at 8:00 p.m.  On Saturday, the consolation game is set for 1:00 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
