The Malone College men’s basketball team began last week with a 70-65 loss at home over Shawnee State University (on Tuesday) and then hosted the 2005 Canton Marriott McKinley Grand Tournament on Friday and Saturday. In the opening game Friday night, Lindsey Wilson (KY) University beat Fisher (MA) College 83-45 while Malone won the nightcap against Kentucky Christian University 98-91. Then in the consolation game on Saturday, Kentucky Christian defeated Fisher 117-96 and the Pioneers fell to NAIA Div. I #11 Lindsey Wilson 77-67 in the championship contest. Making the All-Tournament Team for Malone were Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) and Ben Carver (So., Shelby H.S.). With the 1-2 week, the Pioneers are now 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the AMC South Division. Against Shawnee State, Malone led 31-27 at the half but was outscored 43-34 in the second period en route to the 70-65 loss. Chris Miller (Jr., Highland H.S.) paced the offense with 19 points followed by Humphrey and Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) with 13 points each. Humphrey ripped down a team-best 10 rebounds as Malone won the battle of the boards 38-31. In addition, Miller and Schlabach each garnered two assists while Schlabach collected four steals. Against Kentucky Christian, Malone trailed by nine (50-41) at the half but fought back to outscore KCU 57-41 in the second half and earn the 98-91 victory. Schlabach tallied 23 points (7-13 FG, 5-7 3-PT FG, 4-5 FT) as did Craig Giesy (Jr., Bristol H.S.), including hitting eight of ten from the field. Andrew Weaver (Fr., Highland H.S.) and Zach Fanning (Fr., Garaway H.S.) each added 14 points. The Pioneers dominated the boards 50-29 as three players, Humphrey, Carver and Giesy, grabbed nine rebounds each. In addition, Carver dished out seven assists and recorded four steals. Against Lindsey Wilson, Malone trailed by only three (37-34) at halftime before falling 77-67. Humphrey paced the squad with 17 points followed by Miller with 12 points. Humphrey also collected a team-high seven rebounds but Malone lost the battle of the boards 41-31. In addition, Miller posted three steals. This week, Malone (2-5, 0-2 AMC S) will travel to Geneva (PA) College (3-4, 1-0 AMC N) on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and will conclude the week at Ohio Dominican University (3-4, 1-0 AMC S) on Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. contest. This week’s opponents: Geneva (PA) - Geneva holds a 21-17 advantage in the all-time series against Malone. Malone won last year's only meeting 92-87 (at Malone) and has won the last two contests vs. Geneva. Ohio Dominican - Malone holds a 55-16 lead in the all-time series with Ohio Dominican. Malone swept the two-game series last year, winning game one 120-114 in OT (at Malone) and taking game two 91-88 (at ODU). Malone notes: Jesse Schlabach leads the team in scoring at 14.0 point per game followed by Chris Miller at 13.9…Shane Humphrey paces the squad in rebounds at 7.6 per outing...Ben Carver leads the team in assists at 2.4 per game. The Malone College women’s basketball team lost 72-54 at home last Tuesday to NAIA #22 Shawnee State University and then competed in the Cornerstone (MI) University Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers fell to Cornerstone 72-65 on Friday but rebounded to defeat Viterbo (WI) University 79-72 in the consolation game on Saturday. Cornerstone defeated Indiana University-South Bend 77-67 to win the tournament. Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) represented Malone on the All-Tournament Team. With the 1-2, Malone is currently 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the AMC South Division. Against Shawnee State, Malone trailed just 31-26 at the half but the visitors pulled away in the final 20 minutes as 23 Pioneer turnovers were a key factor in the team's 72-54 loss. Nikki Parson (Jr., Garaway H.S.) was the lone Pioneer in double figures with 13 points followed by Shiplett with nine points. Parson and Shiplett also paced the squad in rebounds with eight apiece but Malone lost the battle of the boards 37-32. In addition, Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.) and Shiplett each collected three steals. Against Cornerstone, Malone trailed 34-33 at halftime en route to the 72-65 defeat. Parson paced the offense with 17 points. Mishler contributed 14 points, including four three-pointers while Kellyn Murphy (So., St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) added 10 points. The Pioneers were edged in rebounding 34-32 as Parson grabbed a team-high eight boards. In addition, Shiplett and Mishler each garnered four steals. Against Viterbo, Malone led 40-31 at the intermission and received 17 points from its bench in the 79-72 victory. Shiplett tallied 24 points (8-12 FG, 1-1 3-PT FG, 7-7 FT) to lead the Pioneers. Parson and Mishler also hit double digits scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively. Shiplett ripped down nine boards followed by Parson with eight as the two squads each posted 41 total rebounds. In addition, Becky Preusser (So., Washington H.S.) dished out four assists while Malone collected a total of 14 steals in the win. This week, Malone (2-6, 0-2 AMC S) will travel to Geneva (PA) College (2-2, 1-1 AMC N) on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off and will conclude the week at Ohio Dominican University (7-2, 1-0 AMC S) on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. contest. This week’s opponents: Geneva (PA) - Malone holds a 15-3 advantage in the all-time series with Geneva. Malone swept the two-game series last year 75-70 in OT (at Geneva) and 68-54 (at Malone) and has won the last five meetings over Geneva. Ohio Dominican - Malone holds a 25-21 lead in the all-time series with ODU. The teams split the two-game series last year with Malone winning the first one 78-63 (at Malone) and ODU taking game two 62-59 (at ODU).
