Women’s Basketball Falls To Geneva 61-58, To Ohio Dominican 83-70

     The Malone College women’s basketball team lost a pair of away contests last week, one of which was an AMC South game, losing to Geneva (PA) College last Tuesday 61-58 and at AMC South opponent Ohio Dominican University on Saturday by the score of 83-70.  With the 0-2 week, the Pioneers are now 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the AMC South Division.
     At Geneva, Malone jumped out to a 36-20 halftime lead but committed 23 turnovers en route to the 61-58 loss.  Nikki Parson (Jr., Garaway H.S.) paced four Pioneer players in double figures with 16 points.  Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) added 11 points followed by Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.) and Kellyn Murphy (So., St. Vincent/St. Mary H.S.) with 10 points apiece. In addition, Parson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as Malone won the battle of the boards 37-34.  Parson also posted a team-best four assists.
     At Ohio Dominican, the Pioneers shot a disappointing 33.3% from the field in the first half and trailed 45-32 at the intermission before falling by the same margin at the end 83-70.  Shiplett posted a game-high 21 points (9-14 FG, 1-1 3-PT FG, 2-4 FT) while Parson contributed 18 points.  Shiplett hauled down eight boards but Malone was outrebounded 41-34.  In addition, Hailey Staubs (Fr., Manchester H.S.) and Murphy each dished out three assists and Parson collected six steals.
     This week, Malone (2-8, 0-3 AMC S) will travel to Daemen (NY) College (4-4, 1-0 AMC N) on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in its only action of the week.
     This week’s opponentDaemen (NY) – Malone leads the all-time series 1-0 over Daemen with a 76-72 victory (at home) on December 8, 2001.
     Malone notes: Nikki Parson leads the team in scoring at 17.4 point per game followed by Cara Shiplett at 12.9…Parson paces the squad in rebounds at 8.3 per outing followed by Shiplett at 7.5 per contest…Kellyn Murphy leads the team in assists at 2.9 per game.

Men’s Basketball Drops Two On The Week

     The Malone College men’s basketball team both contests last week, one of which was a conference game, losing to Geneva (PA) College last Tuesday 89-71 (away) and then to Ohio Dominican University on the road 66-44 on Saturday.  With the 0-2 week, the Pioneers are currently 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the AMC South Division.
     At Geneva, Malone trailed 39-25 at halftime and couldn't recover in the 89-71 loss.  Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) paced the squad with 16 points followed by Chris Miller with 15 points.  Zak Gonidakis (Fr., Stow H.S.) grabbed seven boards as both teams tallied 36 rebounds.  In addition, Miller dished out five assists and collected three steals.
     At Ohio Dominican, the Pioneers trailed 32-21 at halftime and shot 29.2% from the field in the second half in the 66-44 defeat.  Tyler Renner (So., Garaway H.S.), playing in just his second game after missing several games due to injury, paced the team with nine points followed by Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) with eight points.  Renner grabbed six rebounds but ODU dominated the boards 45-29.  In addition, Schlabach recorded two assists while Humphrey posted three steals.
     This week, Malone (2-7, 0-3 AMC S) will host the annual Hoops 4 Healing Classic on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday at 6:00 p.m., Walsh University (7-2, 3-0 AMC S) will face King (TN) College (7-6) while Malone will battle Seton Hill (PA) University (5-3, 1-0 AMC N) in the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.  On Saturday, Walsh will play Seton Hill at 1:00 p.m. and Malone will face King at 3:00 p.m. 
     This week’s opponentsSeton Hill (PA) – Seton Hill leads the all-time series 1-0 over the Pioneers with an 80-75 first-round AMC playoff victory last season.  King (TN) – King holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series vs. Malone having won 87-80 on November 16, 2001.
     Malone notes:  Jesse Schlabach leads the team in scoring at 13.2 point per game followed by Chris Miller at 13.1…Shane Humphrey paces the squad in rebounds at 6.9 per outing followed by Tyler Renner at 6.8...Ben Carver and Miller are each averaging 2.4 assists per game.

Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete At Kent State Season Opener

     The Malone College men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams, led by head coach Charlie Grimes, sent athletes to the non-scoring Kent State University Season Opener last Saturday and two Pioneer individuals posted NAIA provisional national qualifying marks in the process.
     For the women, Laura McElrath (So., Tallmadge H.S.) won the pentathlon with an NAIA provisional national qualifying total of 2991 points while men's athlete Chris Patterson (So., Morgan H.S.) matched the feat with an NAIA provisional national qualifying mark of his own by placing fifth in the pentathlon with 2954 points. 
     In addition, the women's and men's 4x400-meter relay teams each turned in solid performances by taking fourth place in their respective fields.  The women's unit of Vallie Scott (Fr., West Branch H.S.), Kim Winton (Fr., Medina H.S.), Kristina Barrett (Sr., Licking Valley H.S.) and Brittany Davies (Jr., Cedarville H.S.) clocked a time of 4:01.65 while the men's squad of Cody Ford (Jr., Minerva H.S.), Adam Huffman (Sr., Crestwood H.S.), Tim Walter (Sr., West Muskingum H.S.) and Aaron Maglott (Fr., Galion H.S.) posted a time of 3:26.39.
