Men’s Basketball Posts 2-2 Mark Over Christmas Break

     The Malone College men’s basketball team played four games during the college’s recent Christmas break and came away with a 2-2 record during the two-week period.  On Dec. 20th and 21st, the squad competed in a pair of games in Lake Wales, Florida where they lost to Warner Southern (FL) College 72-67 but bounced back to defeat North Park (IL) University 89-88.  The Pioneers then competed at the Ashland University Tournament last Wednesday and Thursday and also split the pair at that event.  On Wednesday, Malone was beaten 93-67 by NCAA Division II Ashland but rebounded on Thursday to defeat NCAA Division II Slippery Rock (PA) University 92-88 in overtime.  With the 2-2 record over the break, the Pioneers are currently 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Warner Southern, Malone led 34-31 at the half but was outscored 41-33 in the second half in the 72-67 loss.  Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) led three Pioneers in double figures with 23 points (8-15 FG, 6-11 3-PT FG, 1-2 FT).  Tyler Renner (So., Garaway H.S.) added 14 points while Craig Giesy (Jr., Bristol H.S.) contributed 10 points.  Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) grabbed eight rebounds but Warner Southern dominated the boards 40-26.  Ben Carver (So., Shelby H.S.) dished out four assists and Schlabach collected three steals.
     Against North Park, Malone trailed 41-33 at the half but fought back in the second half to secure the 89-88 win.  Chris Miller (Jr., Hiland H.S.) paced the offense with 25 points.  With those 25 points, Miller eclipsed the 1,000-career point total with 1,003 points making him the 40th player in Malone men’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.  Renner had 21 points followed by Schlabach and Giesy with 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Brian Allerding (Jr., Loudonville H.S.) ripped down a team-high nine boards while the Pioneers edged North Park 33-32 in total rebounds.  In addition, Schlabach posted six assists while Miller tallied four steals.
     Against Ashland, Malone trailed 47-30 at halftime and never recovered in the 93-67 loss.  Carver led the offense with 20 points followed by Schlabach and Miller with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Renner tallied six rebounds but the Pioneers lost the battle of the boards 55-34.  In addition, Schlabach also posted a team-best three assists.
     Against Slippery Rock, Malone trailed 46-41 at the half, tied the game at 78 at the end of regulation and outscored Slippery Rock 14-10 in overtime to secure the 92-88 victory.  Six Pioneers hit twin figures with Renner leading the way with 23 points.  Miller tallied 17 points followed by Schlabach with 16 points.  Carver and Humphrey each added 11 points while Giesy posted 10 points.  Humphrey and Renner each ripped down 10 rebounds but Malone lost the battle of the boards 42-38.  Four Malone players tallied three assists in the contest while Schlabach recorded three steals.
     This week, Malone (5-10, 0-3 AMC S) will travel to Tiffin University (9-3, 1-2 AMC S) on Tuesday for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off and will then host the University of Rio Grande (6-9, 0-3 AMC S) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
     This week’s opponentsTiffin - Malone leads the all-time series with Tiffin 49-20.  The teams split the two-game series last year with Malone winning game one 82-78 (at Malone) and Tiffin taking game two 86-83 (at Tiffin).  Rio Grande - Rio holds a slight 37-34 advantage over Malone in the all-time series.  The teams split the two-game series last year with Rio taking the first contest 94-81 (at Rio) and Malone winning the second game 98-73 (at Malone).
     Malone notes:  Chris Miller leads the team in scoring at 14.2 point per game followed by Schlabach at 14.1 and Tyler Renner at 12.7 points per outing…Tyler Renner paces the squad in rebounds at 7.2 per outing followed by Shane Humphrey at 6.5...Ben Carver is averaging a team-best 2.1 assists per game.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Bluefield 90-54

     The Malone College women’s basketball team defeated Bluefield (VA) College 90-54 last Friday at home in the team's only contest over the recent Christmas break.  With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 3-9 overall and remained at 0-3 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Bluefield, Malone held a commanding 39-19 lead at the half en route to the 90-54 win.  Heather Fenner (So., Shelby H.S.) led all scorers with 19 points (7-8 FG, 5-6 3-PT FG).  Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.), Becky Preusser (So., Heritage Christian H.S.) and Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) each posted 10 points for the Pioneers.  Nikki Parson grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Malone won the battle of the boards 43-26.  In addition, Mishler dished out four assists and collected five steals.
     This week, Malone (3-9, 0-3 AMC S) will travel to Tiffin University (5-7, 2-1 AMC S) on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. contest and will then host the University of Rio Grande (7-6, 2-1 AMC S) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
     This week’s opponentsTiffin - The Malone-Tiffin all-time series is tied at 15-15 although Malone swept the two-game series last year by scores of 63-62 (at Malone) and 73-64 (at Tiffin).  Rio Grande - Rio leads the all-time series with Malone 34-17 although Malone won the most recent meeting 65-63 (at Malone) on January 29, 2005.  Rio had the won the other '04-'05 meeting 63-60 (at Rio Grande).  Four of the last five meetings between the teams have been decided by three points or less or in overtime.
