Welcome to the Student Access Center at Malone, this office has been designated to provide services for qualified students with disabilities in order for them to be able to take full advantage of their educational opportunities. All students registered with the office receive accommodations because they are proactive in their education.  It is important to be able to name and explain your disability, this will be necessary for both talking to professors and talking to other advisors you may be involved with.  Know what areas of college life your disability affects; there are many accommodations that you may be eligible for if it is asked for.  Know what your strengths are, it will be important to draw from the areas in which you are strongest.  Finally, find out what strategies, interventions, and accommodations best support your style of learning.  The more information you provide disability services with the better we will be able to serve you.  Here are a few tips for to use when looking for a college or university.

 

• Different universities have different programs in place for students with disabilities.  Research these programs to find out what programs best suit your needs. 
•  If you have a physical disability tour the campus, get a feel for what a day would be like at all campuses you’re interested in. 
• Students with chronic medical conditions should make sure their condition can be managed in that environment.  For example, are there doctors in the area that have knowledge of your condition?  Do certain activities or environments tend to worsen your condition? 
• If you have a learning disability find out how disability services can best help you to utilize your gifts. 
• Think about what sort of support systems you will want to have around you, friends, family, a church home, a counselor, etc. 
• Find out how much individual attention you will be able to receive.  Often times it is the individual attention that will help to motivate students when times get tough. 
  
• Find out if the atmosphere suits your personality.  All institutions have different atmospheres, choose one that will best fit with who you are and lead you where you want to go. 
• Finally, when in doubt ask questions!!
