Women’s Basketball Stuns NAIA #5 Shawnee State 66-65, Posts 2-1 Week

     The Malone College women’s basketball team lost to divisional rival Walsh University last Tuesday night at home 64-53 but rebounded in a big way on the road Thursday night, knocking off Shawnee State, the fifth ranked team in NAIA Div. II, by a score of 66-65.  The Pioneers rounded out the week at home on Saturday by defeating Wilberforce University 79-69.  With the 2-1 week, Malone is currently 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Walsh, the Pioneers struggled with a 26.9% shooting percentage in the first half resulting in a steep 37-15 halftime deficit.  Despite a strong comeback in the second half, Malone was unable to completely close the large gap, falling to the Cavaliers 64-53.  Nikki Parson (Jr., Garaway H.S.) led the squad with a game-high 20 points followed by Cara Shiplett (So., Northwest H.S.) with 13 points and Kellyn Murphy (So., St.Vincent/St. Mary H.S.) with nine points.  Parson also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds with total rebounds even at 38 for each squad.  In addition, Erica Mishler (Jr., Hiland H.S.) dished out six assists and grabbed three steals.
     At Shawnee State, Malone trailed by just one point at the half (41-40) and was able to outscore the Bears 26-24 in the second period to secure the hard-fought 66-65 victory.  Shiplett paced the Pioneer offense with 17 points followed by Mishler with 13 points and Nikki Sisson (So., Wayne Trace H.S.) with nine points.  Shiplett also led the Pioneers with nine rebounds as Malone won the battle of the boards 36-29.  In addition, Murphy recorded four assists and two steals.
     Against Wilberforce, the Pioneers led 34-31 at halftime and shot an impressive 68% in the second half to secure the 79-69 victory.  Parson led the team with a game and season-high 34 points (13-17 FG, 0-0 3 PT FG, 8-10 FT).  Shiplett recorded a double-double, posting 20 points and game-high 10 rebounds with Malone outrebounding the Bulldogs 42-34.  In addition, Murphy contributed 10 points and a season-high eight assists.
     This week, Malone (6-11, 3-5 AMC S) will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (12-6, 4-4 AMC S) at home on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.  The Pioneers will then travel to Urbana University (4-12, 0-7 AMC S) on Saturday to close out the week in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
     This week’s opponents:  Mt. Vernon Nazarene - Malone leads the all-time series with MVNU at 26-18 and swept the two-game series last year 75-57 (at MVNU) and 67-57 (at Malone).  Malone has won the last five meetings against the Cougars.  Urbana - The Blue Knights hold a 20-13 advantage in the all-time series with Malone.  The teams split the two-game series last year with Urbana winning game one 74-56 (at Malone) and Malone taking game two 76-68 (at Urbana).
     Malone notes:  Nikki Parson leads the team in scoring at 17.4 points per game (8th in the AMC) followed by Cara Shiplett with 13.7 …Parson paces the squad in rebounds with 8.9 per game (6th in the AMC) followed by Shiplett with 7.2…Parson also leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 53% from the field (6th in the AMC)…Kellyn Murphy leads the team in assists with 3.3 per game.

Men’s Basketball Falls to Walsh, Bounces Back to Defeat Two Divisional Opponents

     The Malone College men’s basketball team lost a hard-fought battle with conference rival and NAIA Div. II ninth-ranked Walsh University 59-54 last Tuesday in the first of three games on the week.  The Pioneers rebounded after the tough loss to defeat Shawnee State University 79-65 on the road Thursday night and then returned home on Saturday to defeat Wilberforce University 95-84.  After the 2-1 week in conference play, the Pioneers are currently 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the AMC South Division.
     Against Walsh, Malone led 25-20 at the half and maintained their advantage for most of the second period until the Cavaliers took the lead with just 1:25 left in the game and held on for the narrow 59-54 victory.  Although free throw shooting has been a strength for Malone this season (74%), neither team shot well from the foul line, including Malone's 47% (7-15) for the game (Walsh was 13-21).  Chris Miller (Jr., Hiland H.S.) led a balanced Malone offensive attack with 14 points followed by Shane Humphrey (So., Loudonville H.S.) and Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) with 13 points, respectively.  Humphrey and Tyler Renner (So., Garaway H.S.) led the team with 10 rebounds each, giving Humphrey a double-double.  Malone however, lost the battle of the boards 40-37.  In addition, Schlabach dished out four assists.
     At Shawnee State, the Pioneers trailed by just one point at halftime (33-32), but outscored the Bears 47-32 in the second half en route to the 79-65 win.  Renner paced the squad with a game-high 27 points (12-17 FG, 0-0 3PT FG, 3-3 FT) and 12 rebounds.  Schlabach contributed 17 points and Miller added 12 points.  Malone won the battle of the boards 38-37.  In addition, Miller tallied two assists and three steals and Schlabach added two assists and two steals.
     Against Wilberforce, Malone held a large halftime lead (54-36) before resisting a Wilberforce second half comeback attempt to secure the 95-84 victory.  Renner led four Pioneers in double figures with a season-high 29 points on perfect shooting from the field (10-10 FG, 1-1 3PT FG, 8-10 FT).  Miller followed with 26 points, Schlabach added 21 points, and Craig Giesy (Jr., Bristol H.S.) had 11 points.  Humphrey grabbed five rebounds but Malone was outrebounded by the Bulldogs 35-24.  In addition, Miller dished out four assists and grabbed one steal and Humphrey tallied three assists and two steals.
     This week, Malone (8-12, 3-5 AMC S) will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (14-6, 5-3 AMC S) at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and will then travel to Urbana University (9-9, 5-2 AMC S) on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off to close out the week.
     This week’s opponents:  Mt. Vernon Nazarene - Malone holds a 38-19 advantage over MVNU in the all-time series although the Cougars have won the last three meetings, including a series sweep last year (96-93 in OT and 94-82).  Urbana - Malone leads the all-time series with the Blue Knights 50-21 and has won the last four meetings against Urbana, including a sweep last year by scores of 100-82 and 98-91.
     Malone notes:  Chris Miller leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game followed by Jesse Schlabach at 14.4 and Tyler Renner at 14.0…Tyler Renner paces the squad in rebounds at 7.3 per contest (12th in the AMC) followed by Shane Humphrey at 6.3…Renner leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 52.9 % from the field (9th in the AMC)…Schlabach leads the team in assists at 2.1 per game.
