The regular season champion in each of the AMC North and South Divisions earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Div. II National Tournament. The number two through number five finishers in each division qualified for the AMC playoffs. Malone (#4 AMC South seed) will open up the post season by making a return visit to Mt. Vernon Nazarene (#1 AMC South seed) on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. to face the Cougars in the opening round of the tournament. At Mt. Vernon Nazarene last Tuesday, the Pioneers shot 36.4% (12-33) from the field in the first half, resulting in a sizable 48-37 halftime deficit. Malone fought back, though, in the second period, cutting the Cougars’ lead to just two points with 24 seconds left, before Mt. Vernon Nazarene was able to secure the 100-94 victory with several clutch free throws in the final seconds. Jesse Schlabach (Jr., Lake H.S.) led five Pioneers in double figures with 24 points (7-13 FG, 5-11 3PT FG, 5-6 FT) followed by Chris Miller (Jr., Hiland H.S.) with 22. At Cedarville, the Pioneers trailed 46-43 at halftime and were down by as many as 11 points in the second period before battling back to take a one point lead with 2:12 remaining in the game. Although Malone was 0-2 on the week, they still finished the regular season tied with Wilberforce University for fifth place in the AMC South Division. The regular season champion in each of the AMC North and South Divisions earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Div. II National Tournament. The number two through number five finishers in each division qualified for the AMC playoffs. Since Malone and Wilberforce split their head-to-head match-ups during the regular season and the two teams also had identical records against conference opponents, the tie-breaker to determine which team would advance to the playoffs came down to the flip of a coin. The Pioneers won the coin toss and therefore earned a trip to the conference tournament with a record of 11-16 overall and 8-10 in the AMC South Division.
