The Malone College baseball team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona on Friday for their annual spring break trip in which the team will play a total of 11 games during the trip (March 4-11). On Saturday, the Pioneers opened up the trip on a positive note by sweeping a doubleheader against Monmouth (IL) College, winning game one 10-2 and game two 10-3. With the 2-0 start in Arizona, Malone currently holds a 6-2 overall record and is 0-0 in the AMC North Division. In game one, the Pioneers grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back en route to the 10-2 victory. Kory Heppeard (Sr., Van Wert H.S.) picked up his first win of the season with an impressive performance on the mound, limiting Monmouth to just four hits and two earned runs over seven innings pitched. Malone posted 10 hits in the game as Jarrod Stahl (Sr., Kenmore H.S.) went 3-4 with one RBI, two runs and two steals. In addition, Scott Taylor (So., Lake H.S.) and Mike Tozzi (Fr., Sandy Valley H.S.) each recorded two RBI. In game two, the Pioneers once again grabbed an early lead (4-0 in the second inning) and cruised to the 10-3 victory. Bob Dubovec (Jr., Kenston H.S.) recorded his first victory of the season after limiting Monmouth to three earned runs over 5.2 innings pitched and striking out seven. Malone smacked 17 hits on the afternoon as Troy Richeson (So., Minerva H.S.), Scott McIlvain (Fr., Marlington H.S.), and D.J. Lung (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) each recorded three singles. This week, the Pioneers will continue their spring break trip in Phoenix, Arizona with nine games remaining. Men's Tennis Team Defeats Mt. Union 7-2 The Malone College men's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over visiting Mt. Union College last Monday in the team's only match of the week last week. Kyle Bowers (Fr., Norwalk H.S.) extended his unbeaten streak at #2 singles to five matches with a 6-4, 6-0 win. With the victory, Malone improved to 3-2 overall on the season. This week, Malone (3-2) will compete in five matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina over spring break. The Malone College women's tennis team lost to Mt. Union College (away) 6-3 on Wednesday and then lost the first match of its spring break trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina on Saturday against Olivet (MI) College by the close score of 5-4. With the two losses, Malone is now 1-3 overall on the season.
