Baseball Opens Conference Play 3-1; Now 16-3 On The Season (13-Game Winning Streak Snapped)

The Malone College baseball team opened conference play this past week by winning three out of four games in a home and home series with Geneva (PA) College (two games at Malone on Friday and two games at Geneva on Saturday).  The Pioneers took Friday’s opener 12-6 and then won game two 6-2.  On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes salvaged game one 7-2 before Malone routed Geneva 10-0 in the finale (five innings: mercy rule).  After a 2-2 start on the season, the Pioneers have now won 14 out of their last 15 games, improving their overall record to 16-3.  The game one loss at Geneva on Saturday halted an impressive 13-game winning streak by Malone.  This incredible start is one of the fastest in the history of the program, ranking second only to the 1993 Pioneer team which began the year 17-1 en route to a 36-9-1 season.
In game one on Saturday, the Pioneers took command of the contest early on by scoring 10 runs in the first two innings.  Geneva answered with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning but was unable to overcome the enormous deficit, falling by a 12-6 final.  Senior Korey Heppeard (Sr., Van Wert H.S.) started on the mound for Malone and earned his third victory of the season after striking out eight and allowing only three earned runs over five innings pitched.  The Pioneers pounded out twelve hits in the game including back-to-back solo homeruns by Troy Richeson (So., Minerva H.S.) and Jarrod Stahl (Sr., Kenmore H.S.) to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.
In game two on Friday, Malone scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth to break open a close contest.  Anthony Barson (Sr., Timken H.S.) then entered the game in the top of the seventh and secured the 6-2 victory by striking out the side in order.  Bob Dubovec (Jr., Kenston H.S.) started the game for the Pioneers and tallied his third win of the season after striking out eight and surrendering just two earned runs over six innings pitched.  He also helped his own cause at the plate by posting four hits and scoring two runs.  In addition, Josh Spencer (Jr., Canton Cent. Catholic H.S.), Scott McIlvain (Fr., Marlington H.S.) and Ryan Hartong (Fr., Dalton H.S.) each recorded two hits and one RBI.
In game one at Geneva on Saturday, Malone scored two runs on five hits and committed four errors in the 7-2 defeat.  Dan Walker (Sr., Ellet H.S.) went the distance for the Pioneers, suffering his first loss of the year after giving up just three earned runs on five hits over six innings pitched.  Scott Taylor (So., Lake H.S.) went 1-3 with a solo home run and Jonathon Lutton (Fr., Louisville H.S.) recorded two singles.
In Saturday’s finale, Malone used a nine-run fourth inning to lock up the 10-0 five-inning victory (mercy rule).  Josh McKeivier (So., Strasburg Franklin H.S.) posted his second victory of the season after shutting out the Golden Tornadoes on five hits over four innings pitched.  The Pioneers smacked 11 hits in the game as Spencer went 3-3 with an RBI single and Dubovec was 2-3 with an RBI double.  In addition, McIlvain ripped a two-run single and D.J. Lung (Fr., Canton Cent. Catholic H.S.) went 2-2 with a one-run single.
This week, Malone (16-3, 3-1 AMC N) will look to extend their blistering start when they travel to Wilmington College (4-4) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.  Malone will then head to Walsh University (8-11, 3-1 AMC N) for two games on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to host Walsh in another doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Special Note:  Saturday's home DH with Walsh University is the 3rd annual Bob Starcher Memorial Day.  Festivities begin at noon with the first game beginning at 1:00 p.m.  All returning baseball alumni will be recognized.

Softball Splits Doubleheader With St. Vincent

The Malone College softball team split a pair of games at St. Vincent (PA) College on Saturday, winning the opener 7-3 before dropping game two by a 6-4 final.  A doubleheader scheduled for Friday at Point Park (PA) University was rained out and has been rescheduled for Wednesday March 29th at 6:30 p.m.  With the 1-1 week, Malone currently holds a 4-7 overall record and a 0-0 mark in the AMC South Division.
In game one on Saturday, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after three innings and then scored twice more in the top of the fifth en route to the 7-3 victory.  Ashleigh Ralston (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) started on the mound for Malone and recorded her first win of the season after allowing just three runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings pitched.  The Pioneers smacked nine hits in the game including a two-run single by Holly Christopher (So., Garfield H.S.) and a two-run single by Cori Helm (Jr., East Brook H.S.).
In game two on Saturday, Saint Vincent scored four times in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.  Malone answered right back with four runs of their own in the top of the second but then were shutout over the final five innings en route to the 6-4 defeat.  Helm went the distance on the mound for the Pioneers, suffering her third loss of the year after giving up only two earned runs on seven hits over six innings pitched.  Malone posted seven hits in the contest as Kristen Cochran (So., Newcomerstown H.S.) ripped an RBI double and Christopher tallied an RBI single.  In addition, Sarah Sweitzer (Sr., New Philadelphia H.S.) went 2-4 with one run scored.
This week, Malone (4-7, 0-0 AMC S) will begin conference play by hosting Ohio Dominican University (14-4, 0-0 AMC S) on Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.  The team will then travel to The University of Rio Grande (8-4, 0-0 AMC S) on Saturday for two games, starting at 1:00 p.m.
