Men’s Soccer Defeats Seton Hill, Ties Shawnee State

The Malone College men’s soccer team posted a 1-0-1 record last week with a 2-1 win over Seton Hill (PA) University on the road Tuesday and a 1-1 tie against Shawnee State University at home on Saturday.  With the 1-0-1 week, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 4-2-2 (0-1-1 AMC South).
Against Seton Hill, Malone found itself trailing 1-0 at the half thanks to a Griffin goal in the 25th minute.  The Pioneers got on the board just ten minutes into the second half, though, as Jason Nelson (Jr., Green H.S.) assisted forward Alex Ferrandez (Sr., Elche, Spain) to tie the score at 1-1.  Neither team could find the back of the net over the remainder of regulation, forcing the contest into an extra frame.  Ferrandez then tallied his second goal of the match (fourth of the season) five minutes into overtime to give Malone the 2-1 victory.  The Pioneers posted six shots on goal on the afternoon while keeper Scott Garber (Sr., Heritage Christian H.S.), making his first start of the season, recorded nine saves.  Seton Hill tallied 10 shots on goal and four saves.
Against Shawnee State, the Bears struck first with an early goal to take a 1-0 lead.  Malone pulled even midway through the second period as Ferrandez assisted Marcos Batchelor (Fr., Colwick, U.K.) to tie the score at 1-1.  The match then headed to overtime as neither team could score over the remainder of regulation.  Both defenses held strong, though, over the two overtime periods, resulting in the 1-1 tie.  The Pioneers took 12 shots on goal on the afternoon while Garber recorded five saves.  Shawnee State posted six shots on goal and 11 saves.
This week, Malone (4-2-2, 0-1-1 AMC S) will host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (3-5-1, 0-1-0 AMC S) in a 3:30 p.m. match on Tuesday before traveling to the University of Rio Grande (7-1-0, 1-0-0 AMC S) on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. match with the NAIA #3 ranked Redmen.

Women’s Soccer Posts 1-0-1 Record On The Week

The Malone College women’s soccer team tallied one win and one tie in two contests last week.  On Tuesday, in their first away match of the season, the Pioneers played to a scoreless tie at Seton Hill (PA) University.  Malone then returned home to defeat Shawnee State University 4-0 on Saturday, giving the squad four consecutive shutouts (the Pioneers have not surrendered a goal since September 9th).  Following the 1-0-1 week, Malone’s overall record now stands at 4-3-1 (1-0-0 AMC South).
Against Seton Hill, the defenses dominated as neither team could get on the scoreboard throughout regulation and two overtime periods, resulting in the 0-0 tie.  Malone took 11 shots on goal in the match while keeper Stacy Messner (Fr., Green H.S.) posted 24 saves and her third shutout of the season.  Seton Hill recorded 24 shots on goal and 11 saves.
Against Shawnee State, the match remained scoreless until the 42nd minute of the first half when Julie Herbst (Sr., Dyer, IN) assisted Erin Gilmour (Fr., Howland H.S.) to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.  Amanda Zabukovec (Sr., Brunswick H.S.) and Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Jr., County Kerry, Ireland) then combined to assist Vana Morgan (So., West Branch H.S.) on a goal in the 57th minute to give Malone a 2-0 lead.  The Pioneers struck again in the 73rd minute as Kara Wenger’s (Sr., St. Clairsville H.S.) shot from Herbst deflected off the Shawnee goalie, narrowly breaking the plane of the goal line.  Malone then put the game away in the 80th minute as Herbst scored on a pass from Wenger to put the Pioneers ahead 4-0.  Malone bombarded Shawnee State with 23 shots on goal in the match while keeper Sam Brown (So., Butler, PA) recorded two saves in the 4-0 victory.  The Bears mustered just two shots on goal and their keeper recorded 19 saves.
This week, Malone (4-3-1, 1-0-0 AMC S) will host Mount Vernon Nazarene University (3-4-1, 2-0-0 AMC S) on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to the University of Rio Grande (1-7-0, 1-3-0 AMC S) on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. match.
